Strengths: Worked great for 15 months.
Weaknesses: DVD portion of drive failed while CD portion continues to work.
Overall: Purchased new in December 2004 for $80 from tigerdirect. Burned CDs and DVDs w/o issue. Drive failed to recognize DVDs after 15 months of use. I estimate I've burned ~50 discs w/ it.Great response time and help from Plextor tech support. While the outcome was suboptimal, the help was efficient. Given the 12 month warranty, they won't fix or replace the drive.

Overall: Cost $ 99.99 after rebate from Fry's Electronics. Best money I ever spent... Burns FAST & RELIABLE ALL THE TIME !!!!!!!! Have never had a coaster.. One caveat: Look at tech support site of your buner manufacturer for recommended media... I use1.) Verbatim for RW+ 2.) Maxell and TDK for -R (DVD media) and CD media....Do yourself and your system a favor - GET THIS ITEM.... You will not be disappointed

Strengths: Quiet, durable, fast.
Weaknesses: None to me.
Overall: FREE tech support, detailed manual, costs a little more than other DVD burners in the same class, but worth it.(especially after the $30 rebate) Roxio Media Creator 6 a little outdated, but I use other anyway. Nero 6.6 Ultra, DVDXCopy Platinum, and Pinnacle Studio 8. 12x DVD discs hard to find & cost more, but the thorough manual gives a list of 8x media that burns at 12x and other speeds. Has been a best buy in PC World for months, including Dec. 2004. You'll be very happy with this writer, unless you want dual layer. Dual layer not supported, but dual layer dics's are running around $10 a pop right now, a little much for me.

Strengths: Absolutely the very best DVD/CD burner period!

Overall: I've only used Plextor burners for several years now and I've never burned a bad disk on any of them I've owned. I go back to the Plextor 12X burner if my memory serves me correctly.I bought the Plextor 712A DVD/CDR burner recently and I use Nero 6. I have HUGE files to mail out and now use the DVD burner (DVD+R disks) for my large data jobs. The Plextor 712A unit says it burns DVDs at 8X, but my experience is it seems to burn DVD+R 8X data disks at around 48X. Unbelieveably fast!!! Man!I also burn a lot of music CDR disks and this burner delivers as advertised with music CDRs. It is the DVD buring speed that is amazing. I'd skip the new double sided burners (unless it is a Plextor unit) and get this burner. Great price, great speed, great reliability. By the way I use a Pentium 4, 2.8 processor.

Strengths: good quality dvds and fast have copy approx. 100 . no coastor works great with dvdxpress
Weaknesses: a little slow on reading. but may be the disc i am reading from
Overall: I would buy plextor again .I am waiting on plextor 716 to come to come on the market . should be the middle of OCT. F Martin
