Canon i9900 Photo Printer
i9900 Photo Inkjet Printer Review, by Dan Littman June 25, 2004
The i9900 Photo Printer is the first Canon model to add red and green inks to its palette, enabling it to reproduce a broader range of colors in photos. This $480 printer also has light photo cyan and light photo magenta inks, which Canon says will be necessary for achieving high photo quality until the company can reduce ink droplet sizes to less than 1 picoliter (the i9900 sprays 2-picoliter droplets). The i9900 is speedy, too: It output our best-quality photo in 61 seconds, faster than any other printer we reviewed. But it printed ordinary text at 3.1 ppm--slightly faster than the average of 4.9 ppm for recent photo printers, but still unpleasantly slow.
Text looked a bit grayish and showed some roughness at smaller type sizes, but color photos printed on plain paper had surprisingly sharp detail and accurate colors. On glossy paper the i9900 produced fabulous photos: Gray-scale prints had sharp focus and detail with lifelike depth and shading; color prints looked very bright and intensely saturated--especially the reds and greens--with great focus and detail.
Mechanically, the i9900 is simple and easy to use. The unit's wide carriage accommodates 13-by-19-inch prints, though Canon's glossy 13-by-19 photo paper costs $2.50 a sheet. The machine can print 13-by-19 iron-on transfers, too.
In ink cartridge yield tests conducted by the Rochester Institute of Technology for PC World, the i9900's cost per page was middle-of-the-road for black ink (3.3 cents per page) but a little high for black plus color pages using only the four primary inks (12.9 cents per page versus a photo printer average of 11.9 cents per page). Because the i9900's inks are dye-based, its prints may fade faster from light exposure than prints made with pigmented inks.
The i9900 can operate with its paper trays folded partway up, which saves space on your desk when you're printing on letter-size paper. The printer comes with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 ports, as well as a Mac-only six-pin FireWire port on the back. If you're using a PC, you'll want to connect it to the USB 2.0 port, as we did for our tests: According to Canon, transmitting all of the data needed to manage the long carriage and the high number of ink nozzles across a USB 1.1 connection can double the printing time. So why didn't Canon make both ports USB 2.0, given that the standard is backward-compatible? A company spokesperson said that using the USB 1.1 port avoids an unnecessary error that Windows XP would generate if you plugged a PC equipped with USB 1.1 into the USB 2.0 port. Though the front of the i9900 lacks media slots and a control panel, it does have a PictBridge port.
Upshot: If you're serious about photo printing, this speedy model could be just what you need.

Strengths: Wonderful pictures, clarity, and natural color quality
Weaknesses: Darks are somewhat ill defined and banding is persistent problem resulting in much waste of time and supplies
Overall: This was a wonderful printer that unfortunately has gradually become a royal pain when attempting to print high quality prints. Still works great for lower quality prints. Banding, particularly noticable in low light photo has become obvious and annoying. After, much research this seems to be a common problem that arises with use. Cleaning helps a bit, but only a bit. Be prepared to deal with this issue if you plan on printing any substantial quanity of work.

Strengths: Great prints when the print head doesn't need cleaning.
Weaknesses: The print head needs frequent cleaning which uses a lot of ink and causes the "Ink Absorber" to fill up, which means a trip to the service center. I get about 15 prints before the heads need cleaning.
Overall: I have always liked Canon products but the i9900 is somewhat of a disappointment. It has been costly to keep serviced as well as supplied with the expensive inks as well as time consuming to clean the print heads multiple times before getting good prints again. If you plan on only ocassional use, then the i9900 is probably for you. On the other hand, if you plan to make frequent use of this printer, you may want to consider other equivalent printers like HP or Epson before making your decision. I know I will the next time out.

Overall: I am a photographer. I use a digital camera and do individual & group pictures for children's sports teams. I get SO many compliments on the picture quality. The colors are BRILLIANT!! I can't tell you how many parents have told me, "I don't know why your pictures are so diffent, but these are the best pictures I have ever had of my child." Thanks, Canon!! But, I don't use Canon paper in it. I've found that Epson paper is the best for my Canon i9900. I use the Epson Premium Luster Paper. Also, for those having banding problems after about a year and a half...that is most likely a worn out printhead. I have the older Canon S9000 and just replaced the printhead because is was giving me bands and discolored prints. Now, it works great again. I purchased it from Canon for $69. It just drops in (like the one you put in when your printer was new...holding the ink cartridges). Anyway, I hope this information helps.

Weaknesses: None
Overall: I bought this model in the UK as soon as they were announced. The i9950 has a direct disc printing facility which is simple and very effective. You cannot convert a 9900. Its different. Since having this machine I have never had a single problem with quality, banding or even jamming except once a sheet jammed and had to be pulled free (5 seconds)and reused. I use all sorts of stock including genuine linen and stock up to 320gsm. No problem. I wish it had a continuous roll system. Ink costs are far and away lower than epson and now Lyson inks are doing a continuous ink system at very reasonable costs reducing ink costs by 4/5th or if you buy the 1ltr bottles by 90% Yes 90% I can buy genuine Canon cartridges (i never use generic) for £5.50 in UK from Cartridge World.

Overall: I probably have to take my printer in for repair. The print quality is poor (photos have streaks and the colors are not right). Had printer for 1.5 years and will probably have to spend a lot of money to get it fixed. Worked with Canon support over the phone for over 1/2 hour and could not get it fixed by normal means. Will let you know when I take it to repair shop as to what the problem is.
