Strengths: Multiple formats of blank DVDs. Can record on double layer DVDs. Black and cream colored front for unit.
Weaknesses: NOT a problem with unit, but double layer blank DVDs are still expensive and hard to find.
Overall: Multiple formats of blank DVDs can be used including the double layer DVDs. Black and cream colored front for unit. Easy to use. Good software and support. My past Sony products worked well for many years.

Strengths: Performs as Promised
Weaknesses: None
Overall: Its hard to find dual layer disks, but other than that, the DVD Writer performs as promised. I only do a little bit of home video burning, but I haven't had a problem yet when I use Pinnacle Studio 9. The kit comes with Nero which is good, but I haven't used it yet to burn a dvd or cd.

Strengths: It copies everything very good with no errors
Weaknesses: It copies Slow.....
Overall: The writer is a very good and reliable writer;however, it is extremely slow. The software that come with the writer is Nero 6.0 which is the best software out there, in my opinion, for burning cd and dvds.

Weaknesses: Bundled Nero Software
Overall: I have been having problems actually burning captured video onto a DVD. The video file is just fine but somewhere during the conversion and burning process the video and sound get out of synch. I am still working through things with Tech Support but it is getting to be an expensive proposition when all I produce are coasters.

Strengths: Performs as promised. Nero software is easy to use.
Weaknesses: You need to make sure you upgrade the firmware to the latest version. Visit the sony website to download and install. Doesn't fit Vaio RZ style desktops well (eject button doesnt work in this style)
Overall: The documentation says Nero image drive is installed - while that may be true, the OEM serial # doesn't unlock this application. Sony tech support is looking into it. It is also difficult to install into a Vaio RZ style desktop - it requires the black face be installed and then the eject botton doesn't match up with the RZ style eject botton so manual ejection isn't possible with RZ style desktop (also good luck figuring out how to the RZ style front and top off so that it can be installed - tech support unwilling/unable to provide me details on how to do that).
