Microtek ScanMaker 6100 Pro Review

- The Microtek ScanMaker 6100 Pro is a solid flatbed scanner that handles both printed material and transparencies. Its most noteworthy feature, its high 3200-by-6400-dots-per-inch optical resolution, is particularly useful for making sizable enlargements from small items, such as a 35mm slide or film negative. As with previous ScanMaker models, the 6100 also has a front panel full of quick-start buttons for common scanning tasks.

Strengths: Fast, excellent quality, Photoshop Elements software included.

    Weaknesses: None noted so far.

Overall Evaluation: I had been using an Epson Perfection 1670 for the past 2 years. The quality was good but the thing was really slow when it came to scanning 35mm slides. The Microtek 6100 Pro is much faster, more reliable and includes some great software. Photoshop Elements is one of the included programs. Great stuff. With the Epson I could only scan 6 35mm negatives or 2 slides at a time. I can now scan 12 negatives and 4 35mm slides at a time with the included adapter. For the price I don't think you can find a better scanner.

Strengths: Beautiful scans. Great additional software. Simple to use.

Weaknesses: Microtek software not as effective as SilverFast. SilverFast software is included.

Overall Evaluation: I have scanned a lot of slides in the last couple of weeks and am very pleased with the results. Easy to use after finding the scan pilot in the SilverFast program. Scan pilot will lead you through getting started. I have also scanned to printer using the button on the front of the scanner. This worked beautifully without any extra black marks that I have had with another scanner. Also scanned a few negatives with very pleasing results. The conversion from negative to positive using prescan and SilverFast was simple and fast. I would recommend this scanner to anyone who wants a scanner that is a step above the average. I wanted a scanner that would do great scans of slides and negatives and I got exactly what I wanted.
