Good Fit For a Midsize Living Room
HDTVs with a diagonal screen size between 42 and 45 inches are LCDs or plasmas, usually with a resolution of either 1366 by 768 or 1920 by 1080 (1080p). The optimum viewing distance for an HDTV screen like this one is generally considered to be about 6.5 to 7.5 feet. That makes a television of this size appropriate for a range of living areas, such as a den, a large bedroom, a midsize living room, or a game room.
LCD Display Technology
LCD televisions, like this one, are relatively thin, lightweight panels with a light source at the rear and a lattice of tiny cells filled with liquid crystals in the middle. They perform better than plasmas in brightly lit rooms and don't suffer image burn-in. But because the liquid crystal is never completely opaque, reproducing black or near-black color is harder for LCDs. Picture quality can deteriorate when viewing from far off to the side; and because liquid crystals respond relatively slowly to changes in applied voltage, fast-moving objects on the screen may appear to blur slightly. But LCD technology continues to improve, and these problems are less of an issue today (look for models that tout a 120-Hz refresh rate and a wide viewing angle). LCDs tend to be cheaper than comparable-size plasmas and are available in smaller screen sizes (37 inches and below).

Strengths: Best bang for buck in its class
Weaknesses: - NTSC sometimes ghosts, especially on sporting events and other high-contrast content- Some gain on screen means oblique viewing reduces brightness
Overall: Overall we're very pleased with our unit. With multiple zoom and fullscreen options and a very affordable (compared to plasma) price, this is an excellent deal. The picture is comparable to many of the plasma TVs we saw, though not as bright off-axis, especially vertically; it's imperative to get the right stand for this model. (We found out by accident when we bought exactly the right sized stand and then stood up to observe a noticeable drop in brightness.) One disappointment -- and this isn't really the fault of the unit -- is that you will suddenly notice the flaws in the quality of video your DVD outputs. HD broadcast is a huge and noticeable upgrade from even the best DVD video.

Strengths: The best picture quality and superb sound
Weaknesses: Reliablity
Overall: I did my research and knew Sony had problems with this technology. Sony denied any problems, but the forums were loaded with the same scenerio. Turn it on, it turns itself off. It is either the "light engine", or the fan won't come on. No fan, no light, so it turns itself off. Sony has the best warrany! I have had a tech in 3 times. Two bulbs replaced. No charge. The last tech got the internal codes, and found that the fan wasn't running when first turned on. So the bulbs that had been replaced were good. Hopefully, when my fan comes in, it will fix it. The picture is the best I have seen. (And I like a perfect picture) Don't rely on what you see in the store. Take the time to set it up at home and you won't be sorry. It's fun to see my friends drool...

Strengths: great picture resolution, esp. with dvds and high definition signals; awesome sound
Weaknesses: 'acceptable' level of resolution with non-hdtv sources
Overall: I have been enjoying this tv for the last three weeks, and for the price is certainly the wise way to join the big-screen and flat panel crowd. I bought mine at Best Buy for 2500, not counting the rewards zone dollar program which I can use to purchase a more recent version of dvd players - I believe Samsung has a high definition version which is now available. I bought another set for the den and will be coming next week. It was a tortured decision for me to buy this particular television versus samsung's dlp version since I have been receiving mixed verdicts, but I am extremely pleased with my decision so far.

Strengths: Color, sharpness, sound, multiple inputs, quality, light-weight, price
Weaknesses: Black levels compared to Samsung DLP
Overall: This TV exceeds my expectations in every way. First, sound quality is superior to that of the Panasonic LCD RP and Samsung DLP RP. Picture is much better than that of the Panasonic and about on par with the Samsung. The Samsung has better contrasts though so night scenes become more vivid but somehow, at least in the show rooms, it seems a bit more pixelated. Also, the lamp on the Sony has a 5,000 hrs life and when it goes out all you have to do is replace the bulb, which I believe is a lot cheaper than replacing the DLP chip. Don't get me wrong, the Samsung is an excellent TV, just a little weak on sound and much too pricey. To continue, there are seven A/V inputs including one DVI. So far I have my Sony Progressive-scan DVD Player and XBox hooked up. I just ordered an over-the-air HDTV receiver (a Samsung SIR-T351) and when I get it I will use the DVI. Overall, this is an excellent purchase especially when you consider the price. The only problem is you may have a hard time finding it. It is currently sold out or on back-order even on Sonystyle.com. I waited almost 2 months to get mine. Talk about the demand...

Strengths: everything is great when it turns on
Weaknesses: Design flaw
Overall: This set has an issue in the lamping system. After running for a few weeks, it refuses to turn on. No picture, just a buzzing sound.See this thread for all the complaints and discussion:http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=316921
