Epson Stylus Photo 785EPX
STYLUS PHOTO 785EPX USB 2880 X 720 DPI 8PPM BLK TEXT Review, by Dan Littman November 17, 2001
WHAT'S HOT: If you don't need any of Epson's extra options, the Stylus Photo 785EPX's $200 price is an absolute bargain for a six-ink photo printer, especially for a model with a flash-media slot, a control panel, and a tray that can feed paper from a roll (so you can print banners), as well as regular cut sheets. Plus, it churns out graphics pages very quickly: We clocked it at 1.2 ppm.
The 785EPX prints detailed gray scales. It also prints lovely glossy photos with superb color and textures. Working from the printer's control panel, you can group images into various layouts with a choice of several borders, and even convert images to black and white or sepia. Epson provides a CompactFlash adapter with the printer, but if your camera uses SmartMedia or Memory Stick, you can exchange the adapter by sending it back to Epson.
WHAT'S NOT: Epson's printer requires you to use a PC Card slot instead of slots to read camera cards directly, so you'll need a PC Card adapter to download photos. If you own cameras with more than one flash memory format, you'll have to fork over from $50 to $80 for a SmartMedia or Memory Stick adapter (CompactFlash adapters cost only about $10). Ink costs are high at 6.1 cents for a page of black and 14.3 cents for a page of color.
The 785EPX's control panel confused us. The buttons for moving around the menus don't match the hierarchy of menu items displayed on the LCD; some commands that should be in the menus have their own buttons (such as selecting the images to print or setting the brightness); and other buttons (for turning the printer on, changing the ink, and resuming a print job) are strewn around the printer's face. Finally, it prints text at a leisurely 2.4 ppm, and even then its text quality doesn't impress us, with choppy edges on large headline fonts and a slightly fuzzy look on body copy.
WHAT ELSE: For an additional $99, Epson sells an LCD display that attaches to the 785EPX and shows you the images on your flash-media card. Without the card, you can still select the images you want to print by looking at them while the card is still in the camera. Obviously, it's much more convenient to use the display mounted on the printer.
UPSHOT: We consider the Stylus Photo 785EPX a great deal for printing photos but not a strong candidate as a general-purpose printer.

Strengths: Good price
Weaknesses: Uses expensive cartriges that you cannot refill yourself
Overall: I had high hopes for our Epson Stylus Photo 785 EPS printer. We mostly print black and white, but wanted a new printer to be able to print an occasional color digital photo. In the beginning, we liked the print quality, but then we realized we wouldn't be able to buy a refill kit to refill the expensive print cartriges (like we did with our old HP). Very disappointing!!! We'll get a Canon next time.

Strengths: None at all.
Weaknesses: Print quality and ink usage.
Overall: I bought this printer almost 2 years ago. I have tried everything under the sun to get the "photo lab quality" prints that is mentioned in the advertisement for this printer used by Epson. I have used numerous photo enhancement software packages and this printer is still a bust, The colors run and are not consistent in matching. The ink nozzles are always clogged, cleaning uses way too much ink, the ink cartridges are way too expensive, and frankly, I would not buy another one of these printers, nor would I suggest it to anyone. Tech support from Epson is "sorry" and the people that you talk to, "have no idea" of what you're telling them. All I can really say to anyone contemplating on buying this product......DON'T!!!!!

Strengths: When it works, it does a great job
Weaknesses: It usually doesn't work
Overall: I read all kinds of great reviews for this printer, so I was excited to try it out. It printed some great, almost professional-quality pictures for me, but 3 days later when I wanted to print something else, I the blue nozzle was completely clogged up. I had to clean it 2X before it would work again. A week later, I had to clean it 6X. Yesterday I used almost 1/2 my ink up cleaning and some of the nozzles are STILL blocked. I called Epson about it and told them of my frequent cleaning and the representitive said, "That isn't abnormal behavior--you should expect that." Well, there you have it. If you get this printer, you should expect to clean it ALL THE TIME! I hate it!

Strengths: Great Print Result
Weaknesses: Heavy ink usage, bad customer support
Overall: It went all well before... for about 4 monthes... Then the printer stop feeding paper(with paper jam light) for about 2 monthes ago. Tried everything that epson's support website suggests, no luck. Called tech support today, he asked me to change the ink cartridge and we'll go from there? First of all, the support website did not mention anything about changing the ink cartridge when the printer stops feeding paper. Second, the price of the 2 ink cartridges is almost the same price as the printer itself. And my guess is that if this method won't work, they are not going to refund my money for the cartridges? Then why don't I just get a new printer and a brand new one year warranty with the same price and without the hassle/telephone toll??? I understand that all products has defects/malfunctions...etc.... However.... Epson really needs to improve the quality of their customer support......

Strengths: Easy setup, fast, and excellent resolution on all prints from 4x6 to 8x10's,
Weaknesses: I had to purchase a pcmcia card for the printer to read my smartmedia card.
Overall: Best photo quality printer for under $150. The ink is less than half the cost of my HP printer. It prints a 4x6 in about 50 seconds that exceeds photo lab quality.
