Bottom Line
Light-up membrane controls and a cylindrical speaker bar give this unit a clean, sleek appearance; tilt adjustment is stiff.
NEC MultiSync LCD1735NXM
MultiSync LCD1735NXM Review, by Laura Blackwell January 24, 2005
As the similarity in names suggests, NEC's MultiSync LCD1735NXM hails from the same product family as the company's MultiSync LCD1935NXM. The light-up membrane controls located on the base are unobtrusive until touched; but once activated, they are easy to see in low light. The built-in speakers, which reside in a nice-looking cylindrical speaker bar at the bottom of the screen, point to the sides, for a very clean appearance. Regrettably, they generated muddy sound at best. The 1735NXM allows tilt adjustment only; height, swivel, and pivot adjustments aren't available.
The LCD1735NXM was particularly adept at displaying our test Microsoft Word document, earning jury scores that were second only to those of the Iiyama ProLite E435S-B. Less spectacular scores on other text tests--particularly the Microsoft Excel screen test--dragged the LCD1735NXM's overall text performance down to the middle of the pack. Though it still earned a Very Good rating, several competing models performed substantially better. At its default settings, the LCD1735NXM displayed many of our graphics test screens as overexposed. Details were hard to discern in light-colored areas of our group photo test screen, and jurors noted a loss of detail in the small images on our Web site screen, too.
Upshot: Text documents look sharp on NEC's LCD1735NXM, but overexposed graphics disappoint. All in all, this monitor isn't a great deal.

Strengths: good quality and response time
Overall: this is a cool LCD monitor. I like it very much right after I see it. It's work also makes me impressed. The color, the response time, the contrast, are all good. And I finally got my rebate back and it cost me only $170 dollars after rebate.

Strengths: great picture, fast response time
Weaknesses: poor speaker sound
Overall: I bought this monitor to replace an older CRT. I was worried about shadowing at first, however the 16ms response time has proven to compete with CRT's even when gamming. The display is very nice, sharp pictures and crisp letters makes it a ease to look at. Set up was a breeze with the plug and play, all cables are located at the back of the base. This allows you to set it up with out the eye-sore of cables at the back of your desk. Menu controls are a bit touchy, but once you get use to them they are fine. BAD: built in speakers are bery weak. Poor sound quality. I would recommend using external speakers if you require sound. This was not a problem for me because I already had a good speaker system.

Strengths: Nice design, DVI, response time
Weaknesses: Controls can be tricky
Overall: This is a very nice LCD. The bezel is slim in design. It came with no dead pixels. The response time is good enough for games or movies. It has connections for both DVI and analog. There are built in speakers. The controls can be a bit touchy, but you dont have to use them too much after its setup. Very happy with the purchase.

Strengths: Stylish. Minimal ghosting. Bright, sharp display. DVI connectivity.
Weaknesses: Greyscale is a bit muddled, poor viewing angle
Overall: Appearance: This is one of the nicer LCD monitors I have seen, mainly due to the unique control scheme. Instead of having buttons or dials to change monitor settings, there are touch sensitive "buttons" on the base. The lack of real buttons gives the LCD a very uncluttered appearance which I really like. The blue LEDs integrated into the base and the backside of the monitor are a nice touch as well. Functionality - This monitor has integrated speakers. They are pretty low quality, as one would expect from such small speaker. If you are using this LCD only for office type work, they will do the job. Other than that, this monitor is pretty basic. It tilts forward and backward; it does not swivel at all. Quality: Text quality is excellent; with cleartype enabled, it is as good as I've seen. Graphics quality is mostly good. There is very little ghosting due to the 16ms respose time. This monitor produces accurate whites and blacks; however, the greyscale is a bit muddled. I wouldn't recommend this monitor for serious photo editing. The main image quality issue this monitor has is the poor viewing angle. I've used quite a few LCDs; this monitor has one of the worst viewing angles I've seen. You pretty much have to look at it head on if you want a clean image. I wouldn't recommend this monitor if you want to watch DVDs, or perform some other task where you might not be sitting directly in front of it. For office tasks/gaming, it'll work fine.

Strengths: Got DVI input, fast 16ms response time, easy cabling access
Weaknesses: Dead or stuck pixel
Overall: Great response time for gaming. A rare LCD that has an easy access to connectors for DVI, VGA and audio. Everything is an A+ until a stuck pixel is found and poking at you like an eyesore. You get used to it with time and if the scenes are changing while gaming, you hardly notice it.
