Sharp LL-172A Review

by Laura Blackwell

Crisp and advanced controls come together in this smart buy.

The Sharp LL-172A-B impressed our jury with its crisp text, particularly in the Microsoft Word and Excel screens. In fact, it earned the highest text score of all 17-inch LCDs we've tested lately. Graphics looked less spectacular; detail was obscured in darker areas of our photo and color-scale screens. Nevertheless, good reproduction of our Web page screen and appetizing color in a photo screen helped the LL-172A-B earn a graphics rating of Very good. Numerous advanced controls, including gain control, white balance, and gamma control, will help experienced users tweak the screen to their liking. The LL-172A-B has no digital video interface.

Upshot: The Sharp LL-172A-B delivers crystal-clear text at a reasonable price.

Weaknesses: nothing i can think of

Overall Evaluation: I was shopping for a flat screen, didn't have a understanding of what products were available, and salesman showed me the different features. the response rate and number times the images were fed to the screen were much better than the competition. the value of product for the price was the best decision maker for me to purchase.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Great picture and color. Text is clear and crisp. In terms of visual appearance, one of the best looking LCD's around. Great price too if you were able to get it with a rebate like I did!

Weaknesses: no DVI input, but you won't miss it since the monitor produces great image and color quality

Overall Evaluation: I just received my Sharp LL172A-B LCD monitor and it is amazing. I read up on LCD's and what to look for and this one has it all (except for a DVI connection). The lack of DVI connection was the one thing I hesitated about before buying this monitor, but now that I have it hooked up, you are not going to be able to tell much difference at all, if any. Pictures, games and DVD's look great on this monitor. The picture and color is true to life, and this is important to me since I work with colors and renderings. Text is easy to read and crisp...setup for this monitor is fairly easy. And one more thing to add, this monitor looks great! Some monitors are good quality, but they lack in the aesthetics department. This one delivers! It is one of the most attractive monitors I have seen to place on your desk or hang on a wall. The price is excellent, especially when you compare quality in image, product brand and ease of use. Kudos to Sharp on a great monitor that doesn't burn a hole in your pocket!
