Belkin Belkin F5D7231-4 High-speed Mode 802.11g Router Review

by Becky Waring

Stylish looks and first-rate setup software make this wireless kit an excellent choice.

Kit consists of:

Belkin F5D7231-4 router

Belkin F5D7050 USB adapter

Belkin F5D7011 PC Card adapter

We were impressed by the Belkin kit from the moment we opened the box--the router has a stylish, sophisticated look that is echoed by the adapters. The same sophistication carries over to the setup wizard, which is the best we've seen in a Wi-Fi router; it takes you all the way from plugging in your cables and decoding what the indicator lights mean to setting up your Internet connection and wireless parameters. Performance was good--the kit managed an average throughput of 15.4 mbps. This is a little slower than some others, but one reason is that the F5D7050 USB adapter does not support the 125-mbps High-Speed Mode that the router and PC Card use; we tested this adapter in standard 802.11g mode. The signal range of the product in our informal tests was excellent.

However, the biggest selling point for households with children will probably be the six-month subscription to the Cerberian parental control package for Internet access that comes with the router (after the first six months, the service costs $20 a year). This package was very easy to set up and use, allowing concerned parents to control what their kids can access, while setting different levels of access for themselves.

Upshot: The combination of super setup utilities and documentation, performance, and parental control features make the Belkin kit a great choice for home use.

    Duration of ownership: 24 Months

Strengths: OK for use in small house and for limited use of wireless network when there are no 2.45GH phones at home or around.

Weaknesses: Losing signal when there are 2.45GH phone rings and when other wifi signal detected. No good for VPN or media transfer. I'm with Belkin tech support for the last 2 years and replaced 2 routers, eventually they have admitted that Belkin does not have any wifi router for Media xfer use or high traffic use.

Overall Evaluation: Good support with life time warranty but bad product and fail to deliver the reliability. Poor and not stable GUI.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Better signal than my other routers, good performance sometimes, easy to setup

Weaknesses: Doesn't work with bittorent programs, slows down sometimes,

Overall Evaluation: The wireless signal is not bad I owned Linksys wrt54gs and this router has stronger signal than that router, maybe not stronger but my laptop doesn't disconnect that much. I was using bittorent program with this router and for some reason once bittorent reach certain speed, router would casue internet to turn off and eventually to slow it down. Even after bittorrent was shut down internet was slow, only computer reboot would fix that problem. I went to check on the firmware, it turn out that firmware on the router was newer than what it was on the belkin website. I tried flashing that router and router didn't die but it is not longer accessable, same as dead. From my experience belkin products don't perform well and I will avoid buying them.
