Canon PowerShot A400 3.2 MP Digital Camera Green
| Overall rating | 81 |
| Image quality: To gauge picture quality, we take a series of shots, with and without flash, at 640 by 480 resolution and at the camera's highest resolution. We photograph a complex still life and a mannequin to see how well each camera captures details and subtle colorings such as skin tones. A panel of judges reviews the on-screen and printed photos and assigns image-quality scores; we then average those scores. | Very good |

Canon PowerShot A400
PowerShot A400 3.2 MP Digital Camera Green Review, by Narasu Rebbapragada October 8, 2004
Canon's PowerShot A400 proves that inexpensive does not always mean cheap. This quality $180 model, a most economical point-and-shoot, has a snazzy case--our test model came in two-tone lime green and silver. "Sunset Gold" and "Sky Blue" are other accent options, as is plain silver. The camera's drawbacks: limited features, such as a relatively short 2.2X optical zoom, and short battery life.
Output quality was terrific, particularly given this model's low price. The PowerShot A400 produced properly exposed shots with good color fidelity and skin tones. Ranked against other cameras in the point-and-shoot category, it earned top scores for color and exposure accuracy. While its sharpness and distortion scores were relatively low, its sharpness was typical for a 3.2-megapixel camera, and it outscored Canon's 3.2-megapixel PowerShot A75--a Best Buy on our Top 10 chart.
Though bulkier than other point-and-shoot models, the A400 benefits from the heft. It's easy to hold and shoot with. The model lacks the grip of the PowerShot A75, but its buttons and dials fit well under your fingers and are easy to press. One quirk: Our test unit exhibited really slow processing times. Even when using our own high-speed SD Card media and the camera's Quick Shot mode, our test model required on average 9 seconds to process between shots.
The PowerShot A400 is short on features--but hey, what do you expect for $180? The camera comes with eight scene modes, among them Portrait, Night Scene, and Underwater (housing not included). You also get a stitching feature for panorama shots, the option to attach audio notes to still images, and the ability to record video clips. Basic features include light-metering modes, manual exposure settings (1/3 stops between -2EV to 2EV), white-balance presets, and ISO speed options; however, you get nothing like the aperture- or shutter-priority modes that you can find on some other point-and-shoots.
The A400 comes with better-than-average documentation. Our test model had a quick-start guide as well as full printed manuals for hardware and software--all in both English and Spanish. Speaking of software, bundled with the PowerShot A400 is a suite of photo utilities, including ArcSoft's Camera Suite 1.3 (PhotoImpression and VideoImpression) and Canon's own basic photo and video editing tools.
Upshot: This bargain-priced, attractive camera produces excellent image quality at the expense of speed and features.

Strengths: Nice Camera for the price (on sale everywhere for $120 or less) buy with PIXMA printer for rebate. Takes pictures with little delayy for a camera in this category
Weaknesses: The little cover by the screen for all the cable plug-in does not seem too snug, sometimes comes out. Could use more zoom. Also body is a little fat compared to other powershot models.
Overall: Like the fact it uses AA even though makes the camera a little fater. LCD is small but adequate (uses less battery as well). Uses SD so can't use my old canon CF memory. Overall nice for the price.

Strengths: Easy to learn for the novice digi-cam operator. Nice range of features: Many different modes/settings, great image editing software included, takes video w/ sound.
Weaknesses: The video clips are in short 3-min. increments, the speaker quality is not all that great, zoom is not available when capturing video.
Overall: The Canon Powershot A400 really is a great camera. I am extremely pleased with its crisp 3.2MP picture quality. I highly recommend buying a large memory card, as it comes with the standard 16MB, which does not hold that many images. I have a 256MB memory card, and that has more than enough room for the amount of photos that my husband and I take. I also recommend purchasing NiMH rechargeable AA batteries, w/ charger, of course. Like all digi-cams that take AA batteries, it will go through regular alkalines faster than you can blink. Many people will tell you that this camera does not have enough features, that some other, more expensive cameras come equiped with. I disagree with that, though this is my personal opinion. If you are looking for a simple-to-use, excellent-quality, point and shoot camera for the non-professional photographer, this is one of the best out there in the 3.2 mega-pixel range. The price is right. Just don't purchase this model for its video capeabilities...It is not meant for awsome video-capture. This is a digital CAMERA, afterall. But its ability to take short video clips is still a nice perk. And you can utilize the camera's software's "Videocapture" editing program to 'stitch' seperate video clips together, and also to dub in backround music, along with some other editing features.Overall, a wonderful product!
