Samsung ML-2250
ML-2250 Laser Printer Review, by Paul Jasper October 26, 2004
The Samsung ML-2250 has a distinctive, glossy white surface. From the front, its design seems extremely compact, but the paper tray bulges out on the backside, so the footprint isn't quite as small as it looks at first glance.
We were impressed with the Samsung's crisp text on our print samples; even the smallest characters were well-defined. Line art looked sharp, too, though we saw some banding in areas of close parallel lines. Our photo print sample was marred by excessive horizontal banding.
Print speeds for both text and graphics were a bit above average. The ML-2250's main paper tray holds up to 250 sheets; you can buy a second 250-sheet drawer for $150. You can fold down the manual feed tray from the front of the printer to supply another 50 sheets or a small stack of envelopes. The rear output tray folds down to produce a straight path through the printer for thicker media such as card stock, labels, and envelopes. Up to 150 sheets of regular paper arrive face-down in the output bin on top.
The unit has both parallel and USB 2.0 ports. You can add networking cards for ethernet ($200) and Wi-Fi ($250) later.
Unlike most small-office laser printers, which have separately replaceable toner cartridges and drum assemblies (where the drum outlasts the toner several times over), the ML-2250 has a combined cartridge. This reduces the number of consumables you have to deal with, and theoretically it should help preserve print quality, since you'll be replacing the drum more frequently. You might expect this to make the printer more expensive to run, but a cartridge rated for 5000 pages costs a reasonable $99.
Upshot: This slightly above-average performer impressed us with high-quality text, but its graphics didn't wow us.

Duration of ownership: 4 Months
Strengths: Low initial cost of entry
Weaknesses: High cost of maintenance, low contruction quality, very low print quality, toner yield very low, terrible support
Overall: This is, hands down, the single worst printer I've ever experienced in over 10 years in the IT industry. Here's just a few of the reasons why: ->Overheats. Badly. Like the surface of the sun. This negatively affects the paper and the toner that come out of the printer, causing sheets to come out looking 'wavy'. ->Paper feed jams *constantly*. Letter, legal, doesn't seem to make a difference - the printer jams at least 50% of the time, and sometimes it jams in such a way as to be difficult to clear. ->No duplex, manual or otherwise. Any attempt to duplex manually will result in a paper jam. ->No accessibility for certain kinds of jamming. You literally need to disassemble part of the printer just to clear a jam. Paper accordions into the printer and becomes very difficult to clear out. ->Advertised as quick warm-up, but in a real-world environment it is painfully slow to warm up. ->Print quality is hands-down the worst I've ever seen. The blacks are closer to gray, there are print voids in the solids (white lines), paper alignment is inconsistent, and this is all with a new cartridge. ->The manual feed pull-down shelf is flimsy. The arms break with regular use. ->Samsung support (the most important issue here) is absolutely horrendous. Their solution to the problem is, after hours on the phone, to send a refurbished printer to replace the unit. 3 printers and 4 print cartridges later, the problems *all* persist. ->The cost of cartridges is exhorbitant. What you save in buying this low-end printer is more than made up with what you'll spend on low-yield, low-quality toner cartridges. Our experience with this printer is truly a sad statement on the quality of Samsung products and support. Pass on this one, research the alternatives.

Strengths: Fast, Toner saver, Cancel button
Weaknesses: warm up can seem slow when I'm waiting.
Overall: Very pleased with this printer. The cartridge that came with it has lasted lots longer than I expected. I really appreciate the toner saver button and the cancel button has saved me a number of times already! The print quality is even better that the printer it replaced that cost me over twice as much. Over all - 5 stars!

Strengths: Quite fast, although a little slow to begin.
Weaknesses: I haven't found one yet.
Overall: I purchased a Brother 2040 Laser Printer last July and never even used a full toner cartridge because of the jams and intermittent resetting of itself. I finally gave up, chunked it, and bought the Samsung. I prepare income taxes and it has more than withstood the season's onslaught without one paperjam. I would recommend it without reservation. I mean if you purchase it for $158 at MWave.com and get a $50 rebate. You cannot beat it for $108. Great little workhorse and easy to set up.

Strengths: quality, speed, price
Weaknesses: size
Overall: I bought the Samsung ML-2250 Laser Printer two weeks ago and am completely satisfy with it. The printing quality is excellent (1200x1200 DPI) and is better than most laser printer around that price. The printer speed, 22 page per minute, is top-notch comparing to its competitors. Furthermore, the price is very reasonable, which runs from $100-$150 for a brand new one. However, one of the drawbacks of this printer is its size. I would say it is a little too big for most small offices and homes that only have a small place for work. Overall, if you could overlook its size, this printer is a must-buy for anyone, especially for new laser printer users who is trying to switch out of using ink-jet printers.

Strengths: -Fast-Cheap!-Front Tray-Sleek Look-Easy to setup-Linux Support
Weaknesses: The tray in the back cannot extend so it is very easy for papers to fall off of it, but the front can extend.
Overall: Overall this printer is great for personal use. You can't beat the price! I got this printer for $140 plus a $50 rebate. The toner is also a great price. It does 5,000 pages for $60. Most $40 toners only do 2,000-2,500. This printer is just as loud as most other laser printers on the market. A major plus is that there is great Linux support. It is extremely easy to setup in Linux. If you follow the installer you should be good to go.

Strengths: Sharp text, low price, low toner cost, pcl6--not just gdi, upgradeable to postscript emulation via DIMM slot, easy installation
Weaknesses: Needs a higher capacity paper tray
Overall: It installed quickly both locally and on an old jetdirect printserver. Full support for all major operating systems--I've used it on Windows XP, 2000, Me, and Debian GNU/Linux
