ViewSonic VP912b
VP912B Black 19 Review, by Laura Blackwell February 23, 2005
We retested ViewSonic'sVP912b because the company has replaced the antireflective screen included on the unit that PC World first tested with a new, antiglare screen. The first version remains the only recently tested 19-inch LCD to win Outstanding ratings in both text and graphics. The newer version, though still an excellent performer, fell short of its predecessor, earning a rating of Very Good in both text and graphics.
Though the new VP912b showed crisp text on our test screens, it failed to match its predecessor's performance on almost every test. The CTX F973 bested it on both text and graphics, and the Philips Brilliance 190P5EB outperformed it on graphics, leaving it with a third-place ranking for overall graphics quality. Our jurors liked the color balance that the VP912b showed in our test screen of a group photo, and its depiction of a brightly colored fruit tart was appealing. Though the new VP912b garnered respectable scores on all graphics screens, it didn't lead the pack on any of them.
Aside from the screen, the new VP912 is identical to the old one. Dual-monitor users will appreciate the thin bezel, which minimizes the interruption between images. The height, swivel, and pivot adjustments let you set the monitor to the most comfortable viewing position; and a PerfectPortrait pivoting driver comes with the monitor. The VP912b's on-screen controls include five color presets. This strong feature package and still-solid image quality enable the new VP912b to retain the Best Buy honors won by its predecessor.
Upshot: Image quality remains pleasing on the ViewSonic VP912b's new antiglare screen--though the previous antireflective screen was even better--and this LCD is packed with useful features.

Strengths: Great Picture Quality. Nearly Unnoticeable Ghost Trails. Space Saver. Looks Elegant with full black coated. 2 Dsub 1 Dvi for future HDTV capabilities.
Weaknesses: Other then little noticeable ghost image. This is a perfect Monitor for gaming and watch Videos.
Overall: Great Monitor Overall. I am just being too picky on the Ghosting Issues. I think Most ppl wont notice that at all. Most of my friends cant notice it at least. Reasonable Price. 3 years of warranty. WHat else can u ask for. Definitely a 5 out of 5.

Strengths: Crisp colors, brightness, nice appearance
Weaknesses: None so far
Overall: Upgraded from 19" CRT allows for cleaner desktop. I got this for $520 shipping included on a special promotion from securemart.com. Controls are fairly easy to use and blend into the surround so they are not distracting. Black color frames the screen nicely. Only problem I've had is going from 800x600 to 1280x1040 which 912b seems to want as the default. Although Windows XP let's me custom size the font to 150% to offset the smaller screen size which results from going to the higher resolution, I found that several AOL screens including the welcome screen and a couple of other application screens had windows that weren't resizable and were very hard to read at the smaller size. I've gone back to 800x600 for now but it's probably too expensive a display to use at that setting. Maybe I can work around it down the road, but anyway, seems like an overall nice display.

Strengths: Bright display, great color saturation, superior text and graphics rendering.
Weaknesses: The setup process is a little bit cryptic at first, causing the user to push a series of little buttons in a non-intuitive sequence, but I got it after a short time.
Overall: This is my first LCD monitor and I was somewhat reluctant to make the change from CRT. I work a lot with graphics in the production of my company website and brochure creation. Now, looking back, I wish I had this monitor on my desk long ago. Working in Photoshop is a dream...the monitor is truly a precision device which makes masking/selecting fine details much easier than on my older graphics quality CRT! I'm not a gamer, but I've stuck a couple of DVD movies in my computer and they looked great on the monitor with no motion ghosting. BTW, I have the new anti-glare version. In my opinion it is a 9.5...I wish I were this happy with all of the computer products I buy!

Strengths: stand
Weaknesses: display - upper side is darker than the lower: pivoting impossible
Overall: I bought it because of the good reputation and the pivoting feature. Pivot adjustments worth nothing as long the upper side of the screen is darker than the lower part. Unbelievable. You don't special images to see it, a simple blue desktop will be enough. When you are in normal (without pivoting) mode it is not disturbing, though still visible if you tilt the screen upwards. Then, if you pivot 90 degrees, the "portrait mode"s right side will be darker than the left side which is ridiculous!!Your eyes feel immediatly that they can't correct the difference between the two shades. You need to turn either your head or the screen with cca. 30 degrees to get a balanced lightning.Costumer service admitted that half of the screen is really darker than the other side and it can be a problem for your "visual sences" if you pivot the screen, but there is nothing they can do about it.We plugged in an other 912 and a VP712 as well and both showed the same deviation. My advice: don't even think about the VP series.I tried a Philips this afternoon (190P5) and it was a dream compared to this Viewsonic both in terms of image quality and viewing angles. Screen adjusting features are also very limited, pivoting software is a joke.I have no idea what the testing people see in this thing.Be careful before you buy!!!

Overall: Is it really 12ms? I just bouth a VP912b monitor and It showed up with the antiglare coating. I also set my desktop to "show contents while dragging" windows. It streaks more than my analog monitor. With a 12ms refresh, it shouldn't have this problem. Some manufactures spec just rise time or fall time, it could be that it is 12ms rise and 12ms fall, placing it at a 24ms real number. I have a dell 1905fp at work and this monitor looks pretty much the same. The brightness shipped at 100% (for the reccord..) I'm really confused about what I just bought. Is this bait and switch?
