Performance
Image quality: To gauge picture quality, we take a series of shots, with and without flash, at 640 by 480 resolution and at the camera's highest resolution. We photograph a complex still life and a mannequin to see how well each camera captures details and subtle colorings such as skin tones. A panel of judges reviews the on-screen and printed photos and assigns image-quality scores; we then average those scores.Very Good

What You Should Know about the Coolpix 4800 Digital Camera

Larger-Than-Average Optical Zoom Range

The optical zoom range on this camera is sufficiently broad to give you considerable creative control. Your options extend from individual portraits to group shots to wide-angle landscapes. Most point-and-shoots offer a focal length range that’s roughly equivalent to 35mm to 105mm on a 35mm film camera. At the wide end (the 35mm, in this case), they shoot a bit wider than what you see with your eye. At the telephoto end (the 105mm, in this case), they can zoom in a good deal closer than you’d be able to with the naked eye.

    Duration of ownership:

    Strengths: good zoom

Weaknesses: no image stabilizer which comes in handy for high zooming in shots. Alot of mine are fuzzy

Overall Evaluation: Overall this camera is perfect for me and has all the critical options I was looking for such as a good zoom, easily usable, great picture quality, and rapid shooting. I highly recommend this camera for all levels of photography ability!

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Very easy to use, great red-eye reduction, lots of scene settings

Weaknesses: a little big but a fair trade off for an 8x zoom

Overall Evaluation: This is my first digital camera and I did not have any trouble making the transition from 35mm. I find it very easy to use and love the ability to film videos. Also, this camera has consistently been able to get rid of my "red eyes" which is no small feat. My only complaint is about the size - a little bulky but from what I understand a trade-off that has to be made if you want a larger zoom.
