Thermal Printers Suited For Receipts, Work Orders and Simple Jobs
A thermal printer like this one is typically used for situations where simplicity is the highest priority: a portable printer, for example, or a printer for receipts, work orders, or other forms. It uses specially coated paper that changes color when heated. Most thermal printers change only to black, but bicolor models can create two colors depending upon the temperature applied. A thermal printer cannot mix colors or create shades of colors, so it's best used for text documents or extremely simple graphics.
Fax Capability Saves Space in Small Offices
This printer can also be used as a fax machine, a feature you'll find on some multifunction models. If you frequently send faxes, having a device that does both can save space in a small office. This printer may have just one phone jack for faxing, or two so it can also be used to place calls via a handset.
If faxing features are important to you, pay attention to fax-page and speed-dial memory -- 100 is the common capacity in both cases. Also look for fax transmission speed, resolution, and perhaps the ability to fax to networked computer.
Compatible with Macintosh and other Apple systems
Printers such as this model are compatible with computers designed by Apple, meaning it has at least one appropriate connection type and also has drivers written for the Mac OS X operating system.
Compatible with Microsoft Windows Operating System
Printers such as this model are compatible with computers that use the Microsoft Windows operating system, meaning it has at least one appropriate connection type and also has drivers written for Windows.
Compatible with Both Apple and Windows Operating Systems
Printers such as this model are compatible with computers designed by Apple that run either Mac OS X; or computers that use Microsoft Windows. In addition to having at least one appropriate connection for each computer platform, it should also come with drivers written for both operating systems.
Be Skeptical of Color Print Speed Claims
A printer's stated color print speed (expressed in pages per minute, or "ppm") should be taken with a grain of salt. Vendors often use contrived methods to arrive at such numbers. For instance, they might print in draft mode, which is faster than the default mode most people use. Or they'll exclude the first page out from a document's total print time, because its slower exit reflects the processing time needed to create the document image for the printer. Or they might send raw data straight to the printer, bypassing any application or PC processing time. The PC World Test Center uses dedicated testbed PCs and real-world applications to reflect actual use as closely as possible. We also time the document "from click to clunk" -- from the time we click the "Print" button to the time when the last page falls into the output tray.

Medium-Resolution Scanners Keep Enlargements Clear
This scanner's optical scan resolution is midrange. In addition to scanning typical documents or photos at actual size (300x300 dpi or 600x600 dpi suffice for such tasks), it can also use these higher resolutions to enlarge such items digitally with good results. The image-file size also gets bigger, of course, so make sure you have enough storage space.
USB Interface Connects Quickly and Easily to Your Computer
This printer uses USB (Universal Serial Bus) to connect to your computer. Connecting a printer via USB is very easy; just remember not to do it until the installation routine tells you to -- or risk having to start over.
The original USB version 1.1 was slow: 12 Mbps (megabits per second). USB 2.0's faster bandwidth of 480 Mbps is plenty for a standalone printer.

Strengths: prints fast, easy to set-up
Weaknesses: expensive cartridges
Overall: Very nice small-business or home office machine, very easy to set up and use, gives you a decent quality of prints (although don't try printing pictures on it!!) - does what it supposed to do. For the price that I got it you can't go wrong with it. The only weakness that I've found so far is the cost of replacement cartridges :-((

Strengths: Great overall printer. Make sure you replace original cartridges with high yield 34/35 when your out.
Weaknesses: Scanning a little weak, but you cant beat the quality for price
Overall: This printer is as good as the comparable HP line. My friend uses the HP and he goes through ink much faster than I do, and he ends up paying more. My high yield black cartridges get about a pack a paper per cartridge. pretty good for $25.

Strengths: Easy to set up and even easier to use. It may be a stand alone printer but I find it remarkably user friendly to use thru my PC
Weaknesses: none
Overall: I had a Lexmark X63 that lasted forever! I loved the printer and fax but I wasn't crazy about the scanner/copier features. But otherwise, it was really reliable. So when I was in the market for a new one ( I gave my old printer to my daughter--yes after five years it still works), I naturally went to Lexmark. For the price--this one can't be beat. Some of the reviews really spooked me--but I said, "What the heck. My other one was fine." Glad I did. Love the flat bed scanner/printer. The fax is even easier than my old one. AND they're gotten rid of that annoying voice on the printer! Easy to use. Sooo user friendly!!!! Hey, it even looks good.

Strengths: Excellent quality of print and very easy to use.
Weaknesses: Small 1/4 inch wheels (held in place by very small springs) intended to serve as guides where paper exits the machine are a problem, frequently catch paper and cause it to jam inside the printer.
Overall: This problem is very irritating and renders the machine useless - until you remove the offending roller. Time will tell whether this machine will continue to operate without the wheel. Lexmark needs to change the design - no others that I have owned have such an exit guide and they work fine.

Strengths: powerful, fast, and more
Weaknesses: cartidrage is expensive
Overall: I bought this a couple months ago. This is a very fashionable and high quality printer. It has very fast printing speed and many more functions. But one of the disadvantage is that it's too heavy and it's cartidrage is too expensive.
