Syntax Olevia LT30HV 30 Review

by Richard Jantz

You get what you pay for with this inexpensive but underwhelming LCD TV.

The least-expensive LCD we tested in our eight-model LCD TV roundup for the April 2005 issue of Digital World, Syntax's Olevia LT30HV is best suited for budget-conscious buyers willing to settle for mediocre performance and limited features to get a really low price. Though the set is far from unwatchable, its flat, lackluster images in most tests earned it the second-lowest overall picture-quality score, trailed only by JVC's LT-32X575.

This 30-inch model offers such features as a dual analog tuner (for viewing two channels at once), an array of audio/video inputs, and a built-in sound system (two 10-watt two-way stereo speakers). It's one of the few units that have detachable side-mounted speakers. Noticeably absent is a virtual surround-sound option (included with most sets), but you can attach a subwoofer (not included) via a line-out port.

The on-screen menu and remote control are simply designed and easy to use, but some features found in other models are missing. There's no single control for adjusting red, green, and blue color intensities simultaneously, and the tint and saturation controls work only with analog--not digital--video.

The unit lacks audio and video presets (for movies, sports, and video games), and you can't save separate video settings for each input device (TV, DVD, or VCR). Documentation is rather slim, though it does include a glossary. And like the ViewSonic's, the Syntax's remote control can't operate other devices.

Upshot: Pluses are detachable speakers and a low, low price. Minuses are relatively poor picture quality and a weak feature set.

    Strengths: Can't think of any.

Weaknesses: Product failure and coordinating a return was a comedy of errors... PLUS

Overall Evaluation: My screen went bad within 9 months (blanks out) which is apparently a common failure with this model. Upon finally completing an exchange, (which took a year off my life it was so aggravating) they pulled the following stunt: they supposedly found some little scratches on the face of the screen, took pictures of them "to prove it" and promptly notified me that they are charging me $675. That unit was in perfect condition except for the initial failure... I made sure of that when I boxed it and inspected it all over... no scratches though I was sure of that anyway, however I didn't think I had to take pictures. This isn't over, but meanwhile I have no reservation in advising that this company is unscrupulous and does not deserve your business.

Strengths: Loved the tv until it lost all power 7 days out of 1 year warranty. Picture quality is great..sound could be better. Hooked up to comcast dvr, use cable remote...there's nothing like an HDTV!

Weaknesses: ABSOLUTELY WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED. POOR CALL CENTER TIMES WAITING; LACK OF RESPONSE TO MESSAGES

Overall Evaluation: Although I love the tv, being without it and trying to have it fixed have been extremely trying. Either Syntax needs to hire more help, or they will lose customers due to the disatisfied buyers. Still waiting on hold after 17 minutes for tech support info. I would consider purchasing again only if support is proven to have been restructured and better quality service is provided.
