Iomega Network Hard Drive 160GB Review

by Becky Waring

This simple, easy-to-use networked drive is perfect for home setups.

Designed for personal use, the compact Iomega Network Hard Drive offers simple setup, backup utilities, and the ability to connect directly to PCs via their ethernet ports. Because of this direct-to-PC capability, you can take this drive along when you travel, in addition to using it as part of your network back at home base.

The Network Hard Drive lacks folder security features: As it is, anyone with access to the drive can read anything on it. However, the unit is a snap to install and use--it showed up in My Network Places even before we ran the included Discovery utility.

Also bundled is an excellent selection of consumer software: Adobe Photoshop Album, Musicmatch, and Iomega Automatic Backup. These three applications neatly epitomize the reasons most home users will be interested in this device.

Iomega Automatic Backup in particular is easy to use. You simply select the files you want to back up, choose a schedule and destination drive (the Network Hard Drive), and you're done. Restoring data is equally quick: You just drag and drop the desired files back to your hard disk.

The main weakness of the Network Hard Drive was its performance, where it ranked ninth out of the ten drives in our overall speed tests. If you are only copying a file or two here and there and backing up at night, performance shouldn't be an issue. If you regularly copy large amounts of data, however, you'd be better off with a faster drive.

Upshot: Though it's slim on security features and none too quick, this portable drive can connect to your network or directly to your PC.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Size, reliabilty, price with rebate was great.

Weaknesses: You have to install the software for to access it. A minor inconvienence, but after that the PCs see it as a regular drive letter. Software bundle.

Overall Evaluation: I took a chance on this drive back when it had a rebate and I don't regret it one bit. It's been working 24/7 at my office for 5+ months. It always on, always available from any PC on the network (w/software install). Speed seems pretty decent and it has been 100% reliable. The backup software I thought was weak, but I prefer what I already had anyway.A good network drive.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Great product - fast write times w/USB 2.0. Nice compact design.

Weaknesses: Did not come with Norton Ghost. Called the company and Iomega said they wrote their own backup program called Automatic Backup Pro. They said it compares the same with Ghost.

Overall Evaluation: I bought my from Securemart.com for $140, no rebates. Product is really easy to use, no hassle during setup. The drive comes formatted and ready to go from the box. I'm using windows xp and a dell cpu. No problems during installing. I would recommend this product to everyone.
