Archos Gmini XS 200 512MB MP3 Player (512MB Internal Flash) Review

by Sam Jemielity

Low-cost 20GB jukebox combines nice sound with black-and-white visuals.

After toying with color MP3 players, I found that turning on the Archos Gmini's monochrome display was like watching Saturday morning cartoons on a black-and-white television. Then again, the sleek battleship-gray Gmini XS200 is about one-third smaller--and noticeably lighter--than the bulky IRiver H320. It's comparable to many 5GB players on the market. This player invites you to make playlists on the go (in contrast, the IRiver won't let you create playlists without a computer).

On the other hand, the XS200's hard drive is noisy, clicking with each new file that loads. The squat metallic joystick can be awkward to handle; I found myself accidentally moving it sideways when I wanted to go up or down, and vice versa. The Archos's 10-hour battery life is relatively short for a 20GB player. And in playlist mode, the screen takes several seconds between songs to display information--a good beat or two after the music starts. (This delay doesn't occur in normal playback mode.)

If you're economical and you care more about how Green Day or the Moody Blues sound than about how their song titles look on a color display, the Archos Gmini XS200 will satisfy your aural fixations.

Upshot: This ultracompact, no-frills unit delivers great sound, on-the-go playlists, and photo storage.

    Strengths: Like the player

    Weaknesses: Very bad service

Overall Evaluation: I usually don’t leave reviews but thought you should know about their service. I sent my MP3 player to be fixed a month ago and when I called today to check on its status they said that it will take up to a month to charge my credit card! Not sure why they did not charge it as of yet and they wont start fixing it before payment is made. Base on this fact, it will take over two months to get my MP3 back. I called them today for the 5th time. Hope yours wont break.

    Duration of ownership:

    Strengths: small, HD size

    Weaknesses: none

Overall Evaluation: I got this to replace my old bigger archos MP3 player. it is small and has a fast USB connection. it also has a power adapter that works with 110-220 electricity so if you travel oversease this could be useful. the price is pretty good compared to the IPod and it is smaller! the display is grayscale (I wish it was colored) but is pretty good. sound quality is very good. navigation and rearranging songs is easy. I looked at other MP3 players with 20GB HD before buying this but for the size and price this was the best!
