HP Color LaserJet 2550L
LaserJet 2550L Laser Printer (20 PPM, 600x600 DPI, Color, 64MB, PC/Mac) Review, by Paul Jasper November 2, 2005
The HP Color LaserJet 2550L is so compact, you can hardly believe it's a color laser printer. The clever carousel design squeezes everything into a surprisingly small space.
At $499, this unit looks like a bargain. However, the printer sacrifices some common amenities, such as built-in networking; also, it has only USB and parallel ports.
The 2550L's simple fold-out paper tray holds just 125 sheets, as does the output bin. You can easily boost the capacity by adding a proper 250-sheet drawer, reasonably priced at $150. Alternatively, you can add a 500-sheet drawer for $300, upping paper capacity to 875 sheets.
However, if you plan to do high-volume printing, you likely will want a faster printer. In our tests the 2550L printed text at a leisurely 8.6 ppm and generated color pages at a miserable 1.1 ppm, the slowest of the batch.
Text quality was uninspiring. Most characters looked too heavy and larger letters appeared blotchy. Color images seemed a bit dark overall, but sharp.
Upshot: Considering its slow speeds and subpar print quality, the only reason to buy the 2550L over the less expensive and network-ready 2600n is lower cost per page.

Strengths: Great quality, small, fast, affordable, reliable. Overall, great value for a color laser.
Weaknesses: Can be a little loud.
Overall: I have had this printer for going on two years now and I have found it a great little printer for printing standard color printouts. I opted to get a cheap mono laser for black and white document printing as in the long run this will save the color printer much wear and tear as well as saving my toners for the more important color dedicated printing I do. I don't use the printer for printing to gloss too often as the laser gloss is burned off during print so the result is not as glossy as you would see from a ink jet. I would absolutely never dream of running ink jet gloss through my laser as the laser would only burn up the ink jet gloss paper. For this reason, any photos I wish to have printed on a gloss finish, I send to a printer such as Costco or Walmart. This is quite an affordable solution and saves me the hassle of buying a ink jet printer. My experience with ink jets has been of unreliable cartridges constantly running out of color and printer heads constantly getting clogged with dried ink. Although many review of this product depict the toner price as a weakness, this "weakness" is to be expected with any color laser printer. Although the printer can be a little loud when it is automatically recalibrating the drums a couple times a day, I don't notice this too much unless I am sitting right next to the printer. Overall I would say this printer has been quite affordable, reliable and has done a tremendous job of printing out the many color documents and non-gloss photos I print from it.

Strengths: when it works..it's fine
Weaknesses: expensive cartridges, high maintenenace, drum replacement 3 times
Overall: Would not recommend. Purchase this brand new. Have had for over 2 years. Not very user friendly. One user really abused it! it's not working now. I would not recommend even at a cheap price. The cartidge replacement cost could buy you a new printer.

Strengths: It is affordable
Weaknesses: Loud, Heavy, and Large. I had one for a week and it broke. The problem was a design flaw. What is said that is convienent is actually not necessary for a printer to operate.
Overall: A Small Printer?! This printer is huge!! I have been looking for a printer that can print in color on a regular basis, so inkjet is out, since the cartridges are very tiny and run out right away and it is very inconvienent to have to refill them all the time...So I was looking into color laser printers and I looked into getting an HP Printer, since they make great computers. But just because someone makes everything doesn' t mean that you should get everything that they offer. I finally got one and found out two inconvienent things that are wrong with this printer...The paper trays are sold seperately, and cost $149.00, and you can paper in the envelope tray, but I don't recommend that; .........and they think that the cartridges are so great, but it isn't great at all. What's wrong?? They move. Cartridges don't have to move in Laser and Thermal Printers, so why do they have to move at all?! To insert the cartridges, you need to plug the printer in, and turn it on, and press a button, very similar to a ferris wheel..........This is the component that broke....and if all Laser and Thermal printers don't have one, then no printer should have one at all. This method is stupid, sinse something that broke in the printer is not in other printers and is not necessary and not needed, it is a serious design flaw that should be avoided. This method is something that I should expect from Dell, Not HP. I am now buying Brother, Samsung, or Xerox, any printer where the cartridges don't move....

Strengths: Quality of prints. "laser" quality.
Weaknesses: Drum costs. Drum cost. Drum Cost. and slow
Overall: When researching a year ago all I saw was "up to 20,000 pages" on the drum. I got just over 5k. Support said I "use too much color". HELLO, it's a color printer. Just added up the cost for 3 color, one black and a drum. Total $478.95 plus shipping. I can buy a new printer for $360 with all this included. Guess this one's in the trash.

Strengths: low price, small size
Weaknesses: noisy, low speed, color doesn't stay on some glossy paper
Overall: Buy this about a year ago, the big issue is color won't stay on some glossy paper. This problem occur after 500 prints. The other is expensive toner only can use for about 2000 prints
