Bottom Line
Quick like the MP760, but also offers faxing and an automatic document feeder. Fastest scanner on the chart.
Canon Pixma MP780
PIXMA MP780 Photo All-In-One Printer (25 PPM, 4800x1200, Color, PC/Mac) Review, by Paul Jasper May 3, 2005
Any small office working with both documents and pictures will value the Canon Pixma MP780. For $300, it's a good multifunction device for printing, copying, scanning, and faxing.
For instance, you can drop as many as 35 pages into its automatic document feeder for fast scanning or copying. Dual paper trays hold 300 sheets; and in case the paper runs out, the unit's memory can store 250 pages of incoming faxes. You can save paper by using the built-in duplexer to print on both sides. The MP780 lacks media card slots, but a PictBridge port lets you print directly from a compatible digital camera.
The numerous buttons on the control panel are clearly labeled, and the backlit monochrome LCD includes an ink-level display above its two lines of text. The unit also has eight speed-dial buttons that you can use to store frequently used fax numbers.
The MP780 uses four dye-based inks, supplemented by a second, pigment-based black ink. In our test prints, text looked crisp, with sharp italics. Large letters were dark and solid, while small fonts were easy to read. Line art printed darkly enough, but suffered from wide horizontal banding and blobs on narrow parallel lines. Overall, color graphics looked good, though the darkest areas had a posterized appearance where the pigment black seemed to kick in too strongly. On photo paper, the MP780 produced images with sharp detail, smooth color transitions, and bright colors.
The MP780 was consistently fast at all printing tasks. Considering that the MP780 delivered better text quality than its faster rivals, its 6.9-ppm text print speed was excellent. Also, it printed our test photo in just 77 seconds, much faster than the average of 127 seconds. The MP780 was quicker than average at copying, too, and it scanned faster than any other model that earned a spot on the chart.
Though the MP780 copied text documents well, its scans didn't impress us. In particular, our detailed photograph lacked sharpness and color accuracy despite being scanned at the highest resolution.
Canon bundles some helpful software with the MP780, including the Presto PageManager document management application and ScanSoft's OmniPage SE OCR software, though not ArcSoft's PhotoStudio image editor.
Upshot: The Canon Pixma MP780 delivers fast performance and high-quality printing, plus office-friendly features like a duplexer, automatic document feeder, and built-in color faxing.

Strengths: all outputs, very easy to use
Weaknesses: none after following directions. Except the ink doesn't last too long, esp. the black.
Overall: My only problem was putting in the cartridges, I tried to put them upside down, but finally relized the error of my ways. wish the ink cart. where a bit bigger. Printing very good Quality very good. Best maching I ever had, I've had several hp printers and have had trouble with everyone. My Epson was good but only printed.

Strengths: Specifications outshine reality
Weaknesses: Will not work with all of my new computers, and paper does not feed straight
Overall: I had high expectations of what htis new printer was going to do for me in my home office environment. But it seems to be the first time I've been dissatisfied with a Canon product. While it can receive and send faxes and copy fine, it rarley feeds the paper through straight. So there is always a noticeable angel to the text on the page. However, the main problem is that it does not want to work with my year old ASUS laptop running Windows XP Pro. I've tried installing it many times, with always the same error: "specified port is unknown". No matter which USB port I use, the same error occurs. I've spent hours with both ASUS and Canon support, and neither one can help. I've connected the printer to a new P4 desktop - no problem. I've connected it to a 5 year old refurb Compaq laptop that my youngest child now has, also no problem. I realzie it seems to point to something on the ASUS laptop, but what it is seems to be beyond any resources I can find.

Strengths: photo printing, faxing, copying, and scanning.
Weaknesses: None, and I wont get into this machine not being able to network. Canon never said it did, end of this dicussion.
Overall: I usually don't comment to much on what I purchase. I did some reading before buying this machine and it seemed to have everything I was looking for. I was a little hesitant on purchasing an all in one machine as in past they werent the best quality and all the functions did just an OK job. After reading about 50 reviews on this machine and most being very positive I decided to purchase the Canon Pixma 780. Installing process, print heads and software both of which took a total of about 20 minutes was very easy, no problems at all. I decided to test some of the features and I must say I have never had a copy machine or fax print as quiet as this machine. I read that it was quiet but never thought it would be this quiet. It printed pictures better then most stores do, and I compared to walmart, target, and wolf camera. It really is amazing how good the quality is. I found the software to be very easy to operate and print. My text prints come out very good, not the quality of a laser printer but darn close. The faxing is quick and quiet and has plenty of memory if you run out of paper which I did one day.I purchased this machine primarly for the photo, fax, and copy functions and all 3 have been nothing less than spectacular. I am so pleased with the quality of the unit and everything it is capable of doing that I would recommend this to anyone. Some people have mentioned the size being to large, I compared the size of my old fax which broke recently (hence one reason I needed this machine)and my copier which I will keep nameless to this machine and you actually save room having just one machine. I also compared ink cartridge prices and once again the canon comes out on top. I have printed nearly 50 4*6 photo prints a couple 8*10 prints, and a lot of faxing and a couple of kids school projects on this machine and I still have about 1/4 of the color ink left in the seperate cartridges. That was not the case with my old printer. With a purchase price of 199.98 how could you go wrong with this machine. I have had the unit for about 1.5 months now and everything is working perfectly. I will update everyone as the unit gets older and has some wear and tear on it.

Strengths: Auto duplex printing, enlargement/reduction copying, 2 paper trays, sheet feed
Weaknesses: Perfection for me would be capability for 11x17 paper.
Overall: I bought this based on other reviews and this is even better than I thought. You can specify automatic duplex printing, enlargement and reduction on the copying, two paper trays (for say regular and photo paper or draft and quality paper), and a combination of both flat bed and auto sheet feed. You can save profiles - preset combinations of features such as for borderless 4x6 photo or, draft black and white letter, etc.

Strengths: see review
Weaknesses: large size
Overall: This is my 3rd Canon model and by far the best. It has quick printing and accurate colors. The replaceable individual ink chambers are more economical than all-in-one chambers
