Canon Pixma MP760
Pixma MP760 All-In-One Printer (25 PPM, 4800x1200 DPI, Color, PC/Mac) Review, by Paul Jasper May 3, 2005
Whether you work with film or with a digital camera, the $300 Canon Pixma MP760 is a great multifunction unit for printing photos. It's one of only two MFPs we've tested so far that include a film holder and a light in the lid for scanning slides and negatives (the other is the Epson Stylus Photo RX620). The MP760's card slots can read most memory formats (other than XD Picture Cards), and images transfer swiftly to a PC through the USB 2.0 Hi-Speed port. Alternatively, you can connect a PictBridge-compatible camera to the MP760's direct-print port.
The clearly laid-out control panel has a 2.5-inch color LCD for previewing images and performing basic editing tasks. You can select images to print by marking and scanning an index print.
Because this model lacks an automatic document feeder, it's not ideal for certain office tasks such as copying large documents. There's no fax in the unit either, but the software package helps you send scanned pages through a PC's fax modem. The MP760's built-in duplexer, which saves paper by enabling two-sided printing, waits about 15 seconds for the first side to dry before printing on the reverse. The cassette in the base can hold 150 sheets of plain paper. The feeder at the rear has a 150-sheet capacity as well, but you'll probably use it to switch among different photo paper types and sizes.
The MP760 uses five individual ink cartridges, holding three primary colors and two black inks: one a dye-based ink for photos, and the other a pigment-based ink for printing text. The attractive, vividly colored photos that the MP760 printed on letter-size paper impressed us as much as did those printed by models using more inks. When using the black pigment ink, this model produced strong dark text, though the edges of some letters looked a little fuzzy. Color graphics printed on plain paper looked less attractive: The pigment black ink created a posterized effect in some areas.
Scans of line art and copies of a text document earned high marks from our judges. Scans of text and photos also looked good, though they didn't quite match up to the best. In our informal testing, scanned negatives looked sharp and showed details in highlights and shadows.
The MP760 printed both text and color graphics quickly, at 6.7 ppm and 2.5 ppm, respectively, and it had the fastest copy speed, at 4.1 ppm. It was slightly faster than the average at scanning a 4-by-5-inch photo at 100 dpi, completing the job in 20 seconds.
Upshot: Geared toward amateur photographers, the MP760 scans film and prints top-quality photos, while offering perks such as a duplexer and speedy overall performance.

Strengths: Fast. Easy install.
Weaknesses: Large footprint. Flimsy rear paper holder.
Overall: After much research, I ordered oe of these printer as a gift for my college bound niece. When It arrived, I was green with envy. I ordered one for myself and I am really enjoying it. Very fast prints with no smudging. Excellent scans. The rear paper tray seems a bit flimsy, but it has a tray/drawer underneath as well. This is my third Canon printer and I wouldn't think of any other brand. Its not a laser and it won't print CD/DVD. That's about the only bad thing I can say.

Strengths: Excellent photo prints. Media slots make for easy printing directly from the memory cards.
Weaknesses: No fax capabilities. Solid software package is included and very easy to use but performs a bit slowly.
Overall: This is one of the best all-in-one printers for sale right now. It does a fantastic job at printing photos, which it was meant to do. If Canon combined the features of the MP780 and MP760 they would put the competition to shame. Best of all the price of this unit is quite reasonable.

Strengths: Canon quality
Weaknesses: Slight audible high frequency sound coming from the printer, really not noticeable unless you?re within a foot or two of the machine. May be of concern if printer is located where you sleep. No fax.
Overall: Great photo all-in-one printer, great functions to copy from slides and negatives. This scanner has a lamp built into the lid for proper slide and negative scanning. Duplex or copy to both sides as it's commonly known is done within the printer, no need to flip the paper over. Paper can be loaded manually or load the built in cassette with paper and your done, I loaded my photo paper into the cassette to avoid dust build up onto the print surface. Copy, Scan, Print without the PC running or even better purge photos from a memory card and print an index of your photos without PC. You can even edit enhance photos within the built in LCD without PC. This printer is user friendly; a novice will pick up the functions fast. Software suite is ok not the best but gets the job done, includes Arc-Soft Image Suite and Omni-Page SE. Decent scan speeds, Has a function for speedy B/W printing which is the fastest I have seen for an inkjet. Quality color photos, better than my old Epson. Ink is very affordable and the ink head is replaceable. Does not seem to bleed through when printing color on plain paper with setting on normal or default. When you use Canon paper for photos its better than original, no disappointments here. Never had a paper jam. If you need a fax function which the MP760 lacks use an on-line fax source. No clumsy power block, it's built into machine. MP760 is not a huge machine but its going to take up some space on your desk, 14"d x10"h x 20"w the actual footprint is 12"x17" height with lid open is 23".This all-in-one is the one to have. Looks and feels like a quality printer.

Strengths: Media card adapter, negative slide adapter, color LCD for picture preview, and my favorite is the built in duplexer to turn the pages over while printing.
Weaknesses: Initally had a hard time setting up, then I read the directions....install software, then attach cable, then power up.
Overall: The machine is a little larger than I had inticipated, but hey I'll get over it. Sort of wished it had built in fax. I know it's big brother has built in fax & a sheet feeder also with duplexer, but this machine is centered a little more to pictures. I have yet to try the text recognition, but I'm sure it will do just as good as a job (to put editable text into Word). Thinking about getting one for Ma.
