Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW Review

- At its native resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels, the $1199 Dell 2405FPW showed remarkable color and clarity. On test screens, text looked sharp, and images looked crisp and saturated. The 24-inch wide screen performed particularly well on our Web page test screen, displaying highly legible text and subtle distinctions in shading. On the other hand, the brightness--specified by the vendor at 500 nits (units of luminance)--seemed excessive at the monitor's default settings, causing our test screen of a brilliantly colored fruit to look a little washed out.

    Strengths: size, price

Weaknesses: may be too bright even at lowest setting

Overall Evaluation: would be nice if the backlight was adjustable all the way to zero.In case you cannot find the brightness adjustment, use the "minus-sign" button. You can't get there from the main OSD menu.

    Duration of ownership:

    Strengths: Sharp, bright, affordable

Weaknesses: good luck navigating through the menus. A little too bright sometimes

Overall Evaluation: The first unit I purchased, I placed next to a 24" Sony. In comparison, the Dell was much sharper and a little too bright. It was either another Sony or Dell 24" and the choice was obvious. For the price, higher contrast levels, and brightness, it was going to be a Dell. It was easier to tone down the brightness levels than to try to up it up. The only downside is probably trying to navigate through the menu screen. But once your settings are all confirmed, that seemed less of an issue.
