HP OfficeJet 7210 All-In-One
OfficeJet 7210 All-In-One Printer (30PPM, 4800x1200 DPI, Color, 96MB, PC/Mac) Review, by Paul Jasper May 3, 2005
The HP OfficeJet 7210 All-In-One crams everything you could want from a home- or small-office MFP into a single unit that costs $300.
Besides providing printing and scanning functions, the OfficeJet 7210 offers stand-alone faxing and a 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) that makes multipage copying easier. The 7210 can fax in color, and it has a 130-page memory for incoming faxes, in case the paper runs out while you're not there. To print photos, you can either attach a PictBridge-compatible digital camera to the 7210's direct-print port or slide your camera's memory card into one of four slots, each capable of reading all the major formats. Using the unit's ethernet port, you can share the 7210 over a network.
The sets of buttons on the unit's control panel, which surround a backlit two-line LCD, are arranged sensibly by task (fax, copy, photo, scan, and print). A numeric keypad lets you dial fax numbers, and there are five programmable speed-dial buttons. The 7210 doesn't have a color monitor for previewing images, but you can print an index page of your photos, mark the images you want to print, and then scan that page to initiate the print job.
The included HP Image Zone software is among the most thorough in the business, but installing all 780MB of it can be a slow process. The well-organized printer driver provides shortcuts to major printing tasks, such as printing documents or photos, while the scanner driver supplies both basic and advanced menus. You also get he Iris OCR program for turning scanned documents into editable text.
The paper cassette can hold 150 sheets. For $100 more, you can add a 250-sheet drawer; and for double-sided printing, you can buy an optional $80 duplexer. HP also sells a $100 duplexer with a 4-by-6-inch automatic document feeder attached, which might be handy if you print many snapshots. In contrast, the $300 Canon Pixma MP760 comes with a duplexer but lacks an ADF.
Two cartridges supply up to six inks for printing. In the box, you get a tricolor (cyan, magenta, yellow) cartridge, and a pigment-based black ink cartridge (designed for better text quality). You can swap out the black cartridge in favor of a photo-color cartridge, but doing this often can be tedious. A slot under the cover is designed to accommodate partially used cartridges.
We liked the 7210's print quality and performance. True to its office designation, it printed very attractive text. Large fonts were dark and solid, and all but the finest italics came out sharp and well formed. Our prints of color graphics on plain paper showed good detail and contrast. With the photo cartridge in place, the 7210 printed glossy photographs with bright colors, smooth color transitions, and sharp detail. The edges of closely spaced boldface letters bled together, however, and our line art print showed some smudges and beading in narrow parallel lines. Despite those problems, the 7210 still earned the highest score for overall image quality among the MFPs we tested this month.
The 7210 was fairly speedy, printing text at 6.8 pages per minute and color graphics at 2.2 ppm (both speeds were better than average). It printed photos faster than any other inkjet MFP we tested, taking only 65 seconds to spit out a 4-by-5-inch photo on glossy paper.
In our scanner quality tests, the 7210 earned especially high marks on monochrome documents. It previewed and scanned our 4-by-5-inch photo at 100 dpi in just under 18 seconds, roughly 4 seconds faster than average. Copy quality was very good, too, and the 7210's photocopy speed of 4 ppm was significantly faster than the 2.9 ppm average.
Upshot: With fast performance and built-in ethernet , the HP OfficeJet 7210 All-In-One is our top choice for an office-type inkjet MFP. And you get superb-looking photos to boot.

Duration of ownership: 22 Months
Strengths: As the article says, it has it all with the printer, fax, copier, and scanner. The network connection is a great plus. The software is easy to use.
Weaknesses: The document feed is junk. I have had more faxes jam in the take up as well as trying to copy or scan multiple pages. I had to take that apart several times to make it work. the mechanism is to light and fragile in design. In usual HP reliability, it died at 22 months. All lights flashing upon turning it on, and of course, warranty is gone. Just like the OfficeJet G85 I had, it runs about 2 years and dies. These are nothing like the old HP LaserJets that were the workhorse of the document world. This is probably the last HP I will own.
Overall: I doubt I ever own another HP based on how this one died at 22 months for no reason. G85 - fool me once. 7210 - fool me twice. Cost to fix? More than to buy a new and better printer. HP's recomendation? They will upgrade me to a 7310 for only $299. The problem is that the 7310 has equally bad reviews on it. http://reviews.pricegrabber.com/printers/m/4215713/discussions/ Consider any HP equipment you buy to be temporary disposable equipment to use for the warranty period only. If you are expecting long lasting equipment, that HP is long gone.

Overall: I've spent a lot of time trying to install the software provided on the CD. It hangs, apparently for no reason. No network activity -- so it's not waiting for a download; no disk/CD reader activity -- so it's not reading media.Software installed fine on my wife's XP Pro; refused to install (ever) on my Windows Mediacenter.

Strengths: All in One, everything there. While some dislike the software, it worked fine for me and I liked how well it installed. Of course, I had the G85 before and it was a nightmare. Network is great.
Weaknesses: All in one, if one thing fails, it is trash. Doc feeder is too frail and jams frequently. I had to work on it several times. The 7210 died at 22 months and is now trash.
Overall: Good points:__Networking worked well and seamlessly. Running both network and USB connections had no issue, other than the USB connection could not be found about 20% of the time.__I liked the software. The scanning was easy. The OCR worked well. Pictures scanned well. Printing was good. __Pictures printed well, with good color and clarity. __I liked scanning pictures. The thing would even do real one-button scanning, which the old Officejet G85 promised but couldn't do. __The fax worked well in the beginning, but we did have a few problems getting it to connect and go through a month ago. Also, it had issues picking up lately.__HP Chat was always available. ______________Weak Points: Reliability. That is something HP meant years ago with LaserJet. We have a 13 year old LaserJet that still runs, after countless cases of paper through it.__The 7210 is too fragile and frail to be real. I'm afraid I'll break it each time I open the printer to replace ink cartridges. About 20% of the time, my computer can't find it, even hooked on the USB. __The document feeder is jamming or not feeding most of the time. HP guys told me how to take it apart to get it running a couple of times, but the sad part is, it is just too weak and frail to be of any real good. It is definitely unreliable, and isn't the point of a document feeder so you can set a stack in and let it run?__Sadder is that real faxing requires the document feeder and any real copying requires it, too. __Printing has had a few problems, too. If you run into issues, try power off, hold # and 6, plug in the power cord and turn on. Wait for Semi-Full Reset or something like that. If it is software, you may get it running again. __HP chat is available, but they are not too in depth in troubleshooting. Or it could be that there isn't anything to troubleshoot. They know it either works or is dead and that is about it. Disposal items. Buy, use, throw away. So far, no one really showed a lot of technical expertise except one guy who did clue me on how to work on the document feeder. Everyone else would leave me on hold for a long time and give a few basic steps before saying it needed HP Service.__Today, it died completely. Turned it on, all lights began flashing. Reset won't work. 22 months old and it is now worthless junk for the dump. __HP gave me a "great" offer of "upgrading" to a 7310 for only $299. Considering the 7210 and 7310 are virtually the same, I can't see paying $300 for a machine that will last 2 years at most and it already 2 years old.__They didn't offer any of their others, meaning they simply want to unload their old unsold junk on victims like me.__Can I recommend the 7210 or HP? No!

Strengths: All you need in one piece of equipment
Weaknesses: If you have a problem you can loose everything
Overall: I purchased the HP 7210 because I thought that I would get quality and service - how wrong can you be. The printer is just 18 months old and has a page count of 1320 and is only used for light domestic use. Recently I started getting an error message indicating that "the cartridges were not intended for this printer" - I did think that this was a little strange as it had functioned perfectly on these cartridges for some months. Thinking that the cartridges were at the end of their life I changed them and this rectified the problem for 2 pages when the message appeared again. I thought that I may have had faulty cartridges so I changed them again only to experience the same problem. I then went through the HP Help Desk who told me to clean the contacts and reset the printer - when this didn't work I was told to change the cartridges again. When this didn't work I was informed that it was a hardware problem and that I should contact a Premium Rate Help Line. Realising that all they were going to do was to make more money from my problem I decided to contact Customer Services who were sympathetic but indicated that there was nothing they could do as it was not a known problem. A search on the Internet soon revealed similar problems from other owners - so much for an unknown problem. Consider my experience of HP against that of Bosch when my Dishwasher malfunctioned. It was two years old and out of guarantee when I had a problem and I called out their Service Agent who diagnosed a faulty thermostat - this was replaced but did not cure the problem. I rang Bosch who indicated that the problem that I had was quite rare and it was down to a faulty motor - I thing they heard me gasp as I could imagine that it was going to be expensive - "don't worry they said we will replace the motor and refund the costs that you have already incurred - we would not expect a motor to fail in this short space of time" - it was replaced and a cheque was sent within 3 days and the washer is now perfect. I think you can probably guess who I would deal with in the future - not HP that's for certain.

Strengths: Network-connected printer/fax/scanner
Weaknesses: SCANNING! and software in general.
Overall: I agree with the comments about bloated software and especially scanning and the poor support by HP. I finally figured out the problem on my own (not sure if this will help anyone else): HP Director's scan program is incompatible with Symantec/Norton's firewall. If (and ONLY IF) I disable Norton's firewall protection temporarily can I get the scanner to work. Now about the bloated software... have you seen the size of those modules?! And you can tell when you try to use it - press a button and light a cigarette (or go for coffee, etc.). Nuff said. Hope this helps someone.

Strengths: Good concept. Has everything you need.
Weaknesses: Short life span
Overall: I am on my second 7210. First one had the faxboard go in less than one year. It was replaced under the warranty. Now the second one - which is 7 month's old is constantly flashing an error message either that the ink cartridges are not compatible with the printer - which they are (new HP's own brand) or all the light are flashing and there is an error: 0x07d 54dd6. I have done everything that HP support has suggested and everytime within the hour of getting off the phone the printer is in an error condition again. btw I just hung up after waiting on hold for over 30 minutes for a support rep. I am hoping this time they will relent and replace this one too!
