Samsung SCX-4720F Review

- The Samsung SCX-4720F looks like the definitive monochrome laser multifunction printer: a big cube of a machine topped with an automatic document feeder. But Samsung goes beyond the basics with this MFP.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Affordable price, cheap toner price

Weaknesses: Not network ready, very slow scanning on high resolution

Overall Evaluation: Samsung SCX-4720F is overally very good AIO machine. Although scanning quality is very good, high resolution scanning takes for a while. Printing and copying speed is very good. Overally, it is very good choice for home use AIO machine.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Easy set up, decent quality prints and faxes

Weaknesses: NOT wireless compatible despite Samsung's representations, terrible support

Overall Evaluation: I bought this multifunction machine for telecommuting from home. There are other models by other manufacturers significantly less expensive with comparable quality, but few that market themselves as compatible with wireless networking. I specifically bought this expensive machine for that feature.Unfortunately, to set up or add to an existing wireless network, an optional proprietary part (SCX-00LA) needs to be purchased and installed. What Samsung doesn't tell you, however, is that the SCX-00LA is not available in the United States, and there is no timeline for its release. The overly expensive machine you bought specifically for that one feature is now an expensive paperweight one room over from the desktop. (After tripping over the 16' + 10' foot USB 2.0 extension cord, and ripping the USB port from my $3,000.00 desktop, I decided not to chance it with the 26' USB cord running through the house again.)Samsung support was completely unhelpful (one condescending schlub actually told me that this machine is not marketed as wireless compatible in the US (despite Samsung's own website)) and it took two full weeks to ascertain the correct status of the SCX-00LA and its unavailability. Samsung's final response? "Marketing people are working on it. Send it back to the reseller." (Too late and the packaging is gone.) Sorry. In short, the 4720-F is a decent machine with decent fax and print quality and is easily set up, but it doesn't deliver what it promises. Samsung support is misrepresentative, condescending, and completely worthless (even to merely get information about the unavailable part) and I've ended up with a very expensive paperweight. I'll never buy Samsung again, and I suggest you don't chance it with this model.
