Samsung SyncMaster 242mp Review

- Samsung's 24-inch SyncMaster 242mp's claim to fame is a built-in TV tuner. We first looked at this model in the New Products section in PC World's August 2005 issue; this is the first time we've been able to compare it side-by-side with other 23- and 24-inch wide-screen LCDs. It performed well, even when compared to professional models.

Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Super monitor resolution/TV picture detail. Picture in picture allows input from many sources; I can watch TV via resizable movable portion of screen as I do CAD, Internet & other work. Great remote!

Weaknesses: Screen flickers for 3 to 5 minutes before settling down after warming up. Not sure if that is suppose to happen; maybe my unit is cursed. Refresh "snow" in small sections up close ocassionally.

Overall Evaluation: Has internal HD/TV tuner and detachable speakers with okay sound. The definition of this unit makes non-cable channels not look so good anymore. After much looking around this is reported to be the best unit for the price, size and functionality. You can use the 242MP as your primary or 2nd monitor to add extra workspace to your computer's desktop. Synching problems have caused me some fustration, but am content I made the right choice with today's technology for my needs. Can always be used for something even after my next upgrade when Plasma 1920 x 1200 technology arrives.

Weaknesses: Not so good sound, my 2.1 computer audiosystem much more impressive.

Overall Evaluation: Very usefull device for home because I can delete my TV, which stand near PC monitor. There is picture-in-picture mode, so you can work on PC and watch (or heard) TV.24 inches with 1920x1200 pixels resolution - great. As PC monitor - no problems. Every parameter could be tuned (including colour profile).As a TV - strongly depends on signal quality. For low-level signals some additional features (filters, etc.) are needed.In general, price/quality ratio is rather high for this panel, imho.
