Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
EOS Digital Rebel XT SLR Digital Camera w/Canon 18-55mm AF Lens - Black (8.0MP, 3456x2304) Review, by Tracey Capen June 9, 2004
It's fair to say that the Canon EOS Digital Rebel launched the now burgeoning field of digital single-lens-reflex cameras--mostly due to its breakthough price of under $1000. But since its release a year-and-a-half or so ago, the Digital Rebel has started to seem a little dowdy next to the latest SLRs from Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Minolta. With the new Digital Rebel XT, Canon lost an opportunity to make it more professional-looking than its predecessor, but it did add the necessary internal improvements to put the Rebel XT among the top consumer SLRs.
The first of these enhancements--bumping up the resolution from 6.1 megapixels to 8 megapixels--was a no-brainer. Not because you can make huge enlargements, but because it gives you more latitude for cropping shots and keeping them sharp. I was able to crop an action shot of a rugby match by about 75 percent and still print a pretty sharp 5 by 7.
Both the Rebel and the Rebel XT do a fine job recording images--neck-and-neck in color and exposure accuracy in the shots I took out in the field. Changes in our lab tests preclude direct comparisons between the two cameras, but the Rebel XT earned the highest scores recorded to date for exposure, color accuracy, and overall quality. Its sharpness score put it in a statistical tie with a number of 6-, 7-, and 8-megapixel models.
The most impressive change in the XT is its speed: In burst-shooting mode and using high-speed CompactFlash media, the XT captured up to 20 shots at a steady 3 frames per second before its buffer filled and it slowed down to a little under 2 fps. The original Rebel fired four shots at around 2.4 fps, and then was too slow to make burst shooting truly viable. The two cameras sound differently in burst mode--the XT makes a noise like the well-built motor drives of high-end 35mm SLRs, while the original model clanks in a way that does not inspire confidence in its long-term durability.
Other improvements of note include the XT's capability to record images simultaneously in RAW and JPEG; its ability to adjust the color balance (along with automatic color-balance bracketing); and its size (the XT is considerably less bulky than its forebear--a difference that becomes very noticeable after a full day of shooting).
Canon made very few changes to the layout of the Rebel's controls and menus--they're relatively quick to change and easily interpreted. My minor gripes include the somewhat stiff selector dial and the small size of the text in the menus. I had a really hard time seeing the menu choices in bright sunlight. Call it vanity, but the Rebel XT's smooth plastic-like case (like the original Rebels) looks kind of cheap and fragile when compared to the metallic bodies of almost any other digital SLR. Canon's good call here was to offer a black-body version, which looks a little more professional.
Upshot: Fast action, compact size, and great imaging makes the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT a top pick among inexpensive digital SLRs.
8.0 megapixels, 3456 by 2304 maximum resolution, 28mm to 88mm focal range (35mm equivalent), f3.5 to f36 maximum aperture range, shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1/4000 second, optical and LCD viewfinders, USB connection, CompactFlash slot, rechargeable lithium ion batteries, 17.1 ounces (body only), Adobe Photoshop Elements and Canon EOS Digital Solution utilities. Strengths: Camera function set at âDefaultâ settings. Color reproduction â Superb Contrast â Superb Sharpness â Superb. Resolution â Superb. Overal Performance - Outstanding! Bang For Buck is also Outstanding.
Weaknesses: May be a little too small for people with large hands.
Overall: First, this camera is designed to take all of the guessing out of youâre photography. The image processor makes all of the decisions to get perfect exposure so you donât have to think about it. OR you can set it up any way you want it in MANUAL MODE. WOW, For the price, you will not find a better digital camera. If you are already a canon owner, you will find that all of you're Eos lenses work beautifully. In the studio, youâre able, thanks to the software provided, to hook directly up to youâre lap top and see youâre photos in real time. I love that. This camera shoots RAW format as well as JPG simultaneously! You can set up your own pre-defined styles adjusting contrast, sharpness, color saturation etc.. This camera even has a BLACK AND WHITE SETTING!! For true black and white, not just grey scale photography complete with color filter settings! You really owe it to youâre self to check this camera out BEFORE you buy.

Strengths: Excellent image quality Fast
Weaknesses: Felt a bit light weight
Overall: Ok, being a professional photographer with my own studio, i decided it was time to upgrade from my Olympus cameras. This was my first choice and what a choice it was. This camera is fast and has excellent image quality. I read several reviews before deciding to purchase this camera, and the complaints about it being small for big hands was valid, i've added a battery grip to add bulk and vertical shooting (since i shoot portriats). The Lens line up canon offers for the eos line is the best, ranging from $70 to over 1500, and any good photographer will tell you the lens makes the difference. Anyway i use my rebel xt constantly so much so i worried about wearing it out.. but like a true champ it continues to preform and give me excellent shots time after time. Wether your a novice or pro, if your looking for an inexpensive camera thats fast and has excellent image quality, this is it..You dont have to spend alot of $$ to get quality. Yes, ive red the reviews about noise and white balance all the so called negatives but when was the last time you really looked at a photo and said "hummmm that sure has alot of noise in it" ..Save your money for lenses, get the rebel xt and have fun

Strengths: Easy to use and understand. I have owned several SLRs but this was my first digital and I found it extremelty easy to get to know. The battery is exceptionally long and quick to recharge, although I would suggest a spare that a fresh one is available at any time. My wife is not a photo hound but she too has found it easy to pick up and shoot very good shots
Weaknesses: This being my first digital, I have no gripes or inefficiencies. I do find that occassionally it will not allow me to taks a shot for some reason or another. It's almost like it doesn't like what I am focusing on and will not fire. Of course, aiming into water or glass is disruptive to the focusing process, but I then switch to manual.
Overall: I have used this camera I feel successfully, on many trips over seas as well as domestically and found it to be a very reliable camera. The review of the shots allow considerable reworking on the computer if you have a need for being maticulous and it allows great definition for the refinement and tweaking of each photo. What I like best and one of the main reasons I purchased it is to be able to use the Canon lenses that I already have with my previous Cannon non-digital SLR. Our most recent trip to Italy was most rewarding. It seems the more I use it the less I need to work on the computer to refine the photo. I would definitely buy it over again and recommend to anyone that they give it a try.

Strengths: Professional quality at a reasonable price.
Weaknesses: None for my purposes.
Overall: I have used 35mm slr's for over 40 years as a professional. I found that with adaptors and long lenses, it was easy to convert to digital. The 2000th/sec allows me to hand hold a 300mm and 500mm lens. The multiple shot mode is quick and you can cover fast action without "burning film." The through the lens viewing makes it easier for precise focusing of manual lenses. A good camera for all around photography.

Strengths: Take really good picture and inexpensive for DLSR.
Weaknesses: Hot pixel, lack of features that many other smaller point and shoot camera offer, small LCD and Hand grip area feel small.
Overall: A friend of mine and myself bought the same camera and discovered that at a long exposure of 5 sec and up...it started to produce red, blue or green dots on the picture. This only happen when the picture is zoom in. Please check hot pixel on google and you will find out what I am talking about. I am no expert at digital camera and dont know how does it compare with other digital camera. Newegg knew about this issue and was willing to exchange without a problem. Canon need you to send the camera to one of their canon factory service location for repair. Why would you want your camera refurbish when you bought it bland new.Hopefully this review will help some user out with the research.

Overall: I can't share pictures on the internet, i can't find out how to change aperture in "manual". Many people say about fast focusing, i didn't find it fast, it cannot focus even when small object fits whole focus square. The rest will be later.

Strengths: Great Photos, Easy to learn, Versatile
Weaknesses: Menu is NOT as user friendly as most newbies need
Overall: I LOVE this camera! The key to it's success is in the user's desire to use it. And, use it often. I have purchased several new lenses for this device, however, not one of the lenses in which I have invested can snap a photo any better unless I put the camera against my eye and do the work. It is a joy to go out each week and find new subjects, or models to photograph. I have come to love the study of light, color and speed that translates into a piece of photo-art. Couple my camera with the greatest photo printer on the market today, the HP 3210, and my hobby has grown to be my second greatest joy (after my 2 kids).

Strengths: The Body is one of the best
Weaknesses: the plastic lens it comes with is anything but acceptable. My G2 produces much better pictures when compared to the standard setup.
Overall: I would buy this camera again. The body when combined with a good lens produces nothing but exceptional pictures. However, the supplied lens produces very soft pictures with less than acceptable color saturation. I purchased the 50mm 1.8 prime and the portraits are excellent. If I were to buy again, I would skip the lens - and no, I'm not one of those photo guys that believes you need to spend $1200 for a good lens.I would skip the lens and save the $50-100 -- it's really that bad. Put the money towards a Sigma or Tamron lens. They will run you a few hundred bucks.
