Casio Exilim EX-Z57
Exilim EX-Z57 Digital Camera (5.0MP, 2560x1920, 3x Opt, 9.3MB Internal Memory) Review, by Eric Butterfield June 7, 2004
The $380 Casio Exilim EX-Z57 makes a fashion statement with its large 2.7-inch LCD and thin silver alloy chassis. The EX-Z57 weighs just 5.2 ounces, so it's light enough to carry comfortably in a shirt pocket. It sports a 3X optical zoom and shoots 5-megapixel images. The big LCD fills the back of the camera, barely leaving room for the controls, which are so small that I sometimes found them frustrating to use with my broad fingertips. You have to use the LCD to frame your shots because there is no optical viewfinder.
You'll enjoy using the large LCD to show off your snaps to friends, and you won't have to worry about wearing down the battery when doing so: In our tests the EX-Z57's lithium ion battery was still alive after we took 500 shots, the point at which we turn out the lights out and let our lab tech go home. This was well above what we usually see from current point-and-shoot cameras, a group that averages 350 shots in this test.
People who rely on scene modes will find plenty to toy around with: the EX-Z57 includes 23 of them. The sundown mode emphasizes red hues, the twilight mode emphasizes magenta, and the retro mode creates a sepia-toned image. Some of the modes are more offbeat, such as the food mode, which saturated the colors in my photo of an apple and made my hand look unnaturally red. There is also a mode for photographing white boards, but its suggested crop boxes often excluded some of the text I had included in my frame. You can adjust the exposure value on the camera, but beyond that you are stuck with what the scene modes give you: There isn't a manual mode, much less aperture- or shutter-priority modes. You're limited to point-and-click photography.
As you might expect from such a small camera, the EX-Z57 didn't wow the judges with its image quality. Overall, it scored below most other point-and-shoot cameras. However, its outdoor shots scored higher than the ten other point-and-shoot cameras in this test set. If you mainly take quick snapshots of friends and family, you'll likely be pleased with the quality. The pictures I took indoors at a baby shower weren't for hanging on a gallery wall, but they were good enough for making 4-by-6-inch prints and handing them out to family members.
The EX-Z57 comes with a cradle for charging the camera's batteries. But while sitting in the cradle, the camera can also play a slideshow of your shots, transfer new photos to a PC, or transfer album pages that you've created with the camera's menus to a Web site.
Upshot: The small EX-Z57 offers plenty of scene modes for the point-and-click crowd, and very long battery life, but users desiring manual controls will feel stifled.

Strengths: Easy to use, long battery, good pictures, compact
Weaknesses: Broke, Customer service weak
Overall: I have had this camera for just over a year. I really liked it and then like many other people reviewing this camera, the lens would not function. When you push the power button you hear a beep but nothing happens. It takes so long to fix this camera and Casio is not helpful at all, I decided to get a different camera and throw this one away. Casio should have extended the warranty for this camera, it is obviously defective based on all of these reviews.

Strengths: Good Quality, when it works... Big screen, when it works... Good Features, when it works...
Weaknesses: Breaks without warning. Has product defect that's been unrecognized
Overall: I personally have had this camera for about 8 months. It was a great camera and I was very pleased with it. I've taken it everywhere and have taken some great pictures with it.Until it broke...The lens would never extend or open. I sent it in because it was within the 90 warrantee. About 3 weeks later I got it back and it worked great almost all summer...Until it broke again...I've NEVER dropped this thing. Also, the exact same problem has happened to my brother's camera of the exact same model... I plan on sending it to Casio again demanding another repair on the grounds this is a factory defect. The only thing keeping me from giving this one star is the fact that WHEN this thing WORKS, it's a fine piece of machinery. Otherwise it's worthless. This is a great camera, but buyers beware, it's prone to breaking for no reason.

Strengths: Easy to carry fits in any pocket great. Most of the pics will turn out great. The flash seems to have great range in darker places. Fairly easy to use and user friendly. SD memory. Bat. life
Weaknesses: Small size can make it hard to hold on to. I have large fingers and tend to hit buttons I don't mean to. Some of the pics about 1 in 6 turn out blurry and sometimes the auto focus seems slow.
Overall: Easy to carry fits in any pocket great. Most of the pics will turn out great. The flash seems to have great range in darker places. Fairly easy to use and user friendly. Plus SD memory seems to be easier to come by at a low price. The battery life is great too especially for the price. The small size can make it hard to hold on to. I have large fingers and tend to hit buttons I don't mean to. Some of the pics about 1 in 6 turn out blurry and sometimes the auto focus seems a little slow. Over all I think its a good camera for the price I had a few too many problems with the focus and how quickly pictures took as well as my grip on the camera because of its size so i have switched to a canon elf but over all it is a good camera.

Strengths: -Portable and very compact ( one the best in this class )-Longest battery life period! Largest LCD display - Very Compact - Very fast start-up - uses SD cards.
Weaknesses: Average Photo Quality, wished it came with a camera case.
Overall: Everything you dread on a typical camera you wont find here. Its battery life is the best in its category, it is one of the most compact in its category, very quick start up, fairly intuitive operation, largest LCD of its category, use cheap SD cards, easy point and shoot camera. You wont appreciate battery life till you find yourself getting a Sam's Club card and buying alkaline batteries in bulk! You Canon owners would know. Then, have to go to Circuit City or Best Buys to get Expensive Memory Sticks -you Sony owners would know! This camera is definitely a point a shoot model, take it for what it is, for the price point, it is not an SLR for you rediculous reviewers that compare apples and oranges. Have had mine for almost a year and has worked great with no quibbles. I have no problems recommending it to anyone.
