Brother HL-2070N
HL-2070N Review, by Paul Jasper June 24, 2005
The Brother HL-2070N is essentially the same small-office laser as the Brother HL-2040, but with a built-in print server that makes it easy to share among a small group of co-workers. But the usage load would have to be fairly light: Though the HL-2070N isn't designed to meet the demands usually placed on a workgroup laser, it performs very well for a $200 printer.
Its single paper tray holds up to 250 sheets--letter or legal size. You can feed alternative paper and thicker media such as envelopes through its manual slot, one at a time. The bin on top accommodates up to 100 sheets. And that's the extent of the HL-2070N's paper-handling capabilities--no 500-sheet add-ons or optional duplexers here! Dashing off more than a few envelopes--or alternating between letterhead and plain paper with any frequency--will quickly grow tiresome. That said, at least you get a proper paper drawer instead of a fold-down tray like the ones that some of the cheapest small-office lasers use.
In our performance tests, the HL-2070N turned out 16.6 text pages per minute, which is slower than most workgroup lasers but far from the worst we've seen. Its graphics speed of 9.9 ppm is a tad slower than the HL-2040's but above the workgroup printer average. The printer takes $60 toner cartridges, rated by Brother to yield 2500 sheets; these, combined with a drum that needs replacing every 12,000 pages, work out to a consumables cost of 3.4 cents per page--expensive even for a small-office printer.
Like the HL-2040's, the HL-2070N's printed text rated Good in our quality tests. The overall weight of the page looked light due to the fineness of the characters, and some fonts appeared slightly fuzzy under a magnifying glass. Our line art test looked light, too--almost gray, in fact--with a little vertical and horizontal banding visible in some places. The grayscale image came out too dark and was superimposed with banding that one of our judges described as "plaid."
The PC World Test Center usually tests networked printers in a typical corporate scenario, where a Windows Server 2003 system manages the printer. Client PCs wishing to connect to the printer download the driver from the server and send print jobs to a single queue on the server. This simplifies administering a network where, over time, many client PCs may want to access the same printer. The HL-2070N is a snap to install in such an environment, thanks to Brother's Quick Setup Guide and flawless installation software. More likely, you'll install the driver directly from the CD-ROM onto each system in a small peer-to-peer network of client PCs, where each maintains its own print queue and connection to the printer. We found the HL-2070N just as simple to install in this way.
Upshot: The HL-2070N is a well-built printer for small groups of low-volume users, where the convenience of laser-printed documents outweighs any need for economical printing or perfect quality.
Rated 20 ppm. Performed at16.6 ppm text/9.9 ppm graphics, 2400-by-600-dpi maximum black-and-white resolution, 250 pages input, 100 output.

Duration of ownership: 1 Year
Strengths: Great computer for the price if you do a lot of printing in back ink. The ink last so much longer and prints fast.
Weaknesses: A little bit of curve in the paper.
Overall: I would buy another one if this one breaks. it is so cost effective. Great for students!

Strengths: Reliable printing and excellent toner life make it a clear choice in the home business sector or for any home user that doesn't require colour printing.
Weaknesses: No multi-purpose tray or high capacity toner.
Overall: After reading the reviews of those people having problems at 2 months time I thought it important share my experiance. Installation was very simple; and everytime I've clicked print pages have come out. More than I can say for any HP I've owned in the workplace! 18 months, 6 toner replacments, 2 drum replacements and no problems. It's paid for itself over high capacity ink jets.

Strengths: Insanely simple to set up on a network. Perfect replacement for an ink-jet printer. How can it be this inexpensive?
Weaknesses: I haven't found one yet
Overall: I purchased this printer to replace an HP1115 printer that finally took a dump and ceased to work. Ever since I purchased a heat sublimation printer for my photos, I've never needed the 1115 to print color, so I was willing to go with a monochrome printer instead. After looking at a few models online, I decided that I would definitely like to go with a laser printer this time around since they're faster and simpler. I went to Office Max and saw the 2070N sitting on a shelf and never even heard of the model before. After some comparison shopping, I decided to bring it home and try it out. Much to my surprise, I had the printer plugged into my WRT54G linksys router, printing, and configured for all 4 of my home PCs. One of them is my wife's iBook. Up until this point, I tried configuring her laptop to print to the 1115 through a d-link wired router with parallel port for printer support and have failed every attempt I've given. I have already had 2 poeple purchase this printer after showing them how simple it was to set up. I have yet to experience the "curling" some people are complaining about, but then I only buy decent paper. I also fail to understand how people can say this thing is noisy. No matter what, however, this is the best money i've ever spent on a printer out of the dozen or so I've owned over the years.

Strengths: Easy setup, great Bonjour support, fast printing, clear controls
Weaknesses: Rear-side-mounted power button can be inconvenient
Overall: My client was very happy with this Brother, which replaced his old pre-USB serial HP. Snapped an Ethernet cable between the printer and CPU, and the printer's great zero-config Bonjour feature caused it to show right up and be immediately usable. Prints as fast as it can feed paper, and the first page is pretty sprightly, too. Extremely Macintosh-compatible as well, with a very good and very standard user interface. I own nothing but Brothers myself, and I recommend them constantly.

Strengths: Very fast, super cheap price on machine and toner.
Weaknesses: Have none to date. Does just what it says it will.
Overall: After reading many positive reviews on this printer I decided to purchase for small business use. Constantly buying replacement ink for my ink jet was my push to find a more economical printer. The set up was a snap. The print is EXCELLENT and even on saver mode it prints just fine. It is also very fast and the page curling thing is blown way out of proportion. If black only print is what you need I highly recomend this printer. I also checked into toner replacement for this machine and found it very reasonable on Amazon around $43. You can also get compatable toner in the $32 range around the net. Now at approximately .02 per page you cannot beat this printer. Plus it looks great and takes up a small amount of space. I highly recommend the Brother HL2070N.

Strengths: Easy to assemble and operate. Like the envelope feature.
Weaknesses: Haven't found any yet.
Overall: I have no complaints. It has exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this printer to others. The envelope feature pleased me. Just put the #10 envelope in the slot at the front of the printer and print. The printer was recommended by a dealer.

Strengths: Low cost, Networkable (Web Admin Interface), Small, power save mode, econ toner mode, quick (even when coming out of sleep mode), Low toner warning, PCL 6 support, manual duplex, 16 MB RAM.
Weaknesses: Comes w/a starter cartridge, even w/econo mode enabled, it's only good for 999 pgs (it forces you to replace it). Plastic feels flimsy; feels like it?s going to break the paper tray when it opens.
Overall: If you can find this printer for less then $100, then grab it! It's a great printer, and well worth it.If you order this printer order an extra cartridge so that you have one on hand. The printer comes with a starter cartridge, even with economy mode enabled, it is only good for 999 pages (at which time it forces you to replace the toner). It does warn you that the toner is getting low (I did not take note of the page count, at the first warning), but after a couple of days telling it to continue (a week at the most) it stopped printing (page count was 999), I print a fair amount, about 500-1000 pages per month (1-2 reams of paper). The starter cartridge was not empty, but I was forced to replace it, not very economical. Because I did not have an extra toner cartridge on hand, and I needed to print, I had to run to the store and buy one, and pay full retail. Ouch! I could have paid half the price online if I had known. It?s a great little printer!Plastic on the printer feels flimsy; It feels like I am going to break the paper tray every time I open it. So be gentle. It?s not a solid $1000 printer, but the printouts look just as good.I wish it had a PS driver, but it prints PDF fine using the PCL 6 driver that comes on the CD.When you have the manual duplex turned on, it will print the front side of the pages, and then after you reload the paper in the tray, you need to press the resume button on the printer so that it will continue to print the second side.It does not have a paper support for the manual feed slot, so I found it works best to hold the paper until it starts printing, if you use it. When you first load the paper in the manual slot, it pulls it in about 1cm (1/2 inch), and then it?s ready to receive the print job.It has a hard time with card stock (If could handle it better if it had a rear exit for the paper). You have to use the manual feed slot or the card stock jams in the paper tray (too thick for the pickup rollers).Great printer! I would definitely buy it again, I paid $129.00 (+Tax and Shipping), and I would buy it in a heart beat for under $100.

Strengths: Price, Quality, features and compact design. Supported by PCs and Macs. Best Printer for light weight network printing.
Weaknesses: None so far
Overall: The best small size network printer that can be controlled both on a Mac and PC. I have worked with a lot of different printers through out the years. The power savings works well, my old printer (HP 2100) used to stay on and make weird noise in power save. Price is very reasonable for the features. I was able to set it up on the network real fast and documentation is real good. If you want full tweak and control over the printer and printer network settings you can also do that with a little more effort. Print speed is fast and quality of print is excellent.
