Samsung ML-2010
Samsung ML-2010 Review
- The entry-level, $150 Samsung ML-2010 displays the company's distinctive, smooth plastic styling. When not in use, it's an attractive, compact white box. To prepare it for action, you must fold down the tray at the front and then slide in up to 150 sheets of paper. The printer accommodates a variety of paper sizes, including letter and legal. Samsung provides a translucent plastic cover to protect the paper supply from dust. You feed thicker media, such as envelopes, one at a time through the manual slot just above the standard tray. Printed sheets emerge face down in the bin atop the printer, which can hold up to 100 pages. Unlike the pricier Samsung ML-2250, which we reviewed in October 2004, this model doesn't have a straight-through paper path to protect envelopes from creasing, nor is it upgradable with extra paper trays.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Fast printing (once page is rendered), toner cartridge easily refilled, cheap
Weaknesses: Jams easily, loud
Overall Evaluation: I think I actually got money back by buying this printer because it was a floor model and had a rebate attached. But anyway, I was worried about the floor model part but it seems to be able to take a lot of use and maybe some abuse. As others have said, it's about as loud as a small jet engine when turning on, and it takes a little bit of time to warm up. It's extremely quick printing documents with selectable text like Word docs and typed PDFs. Image PDFs take may a WHILE to render per page, depending on the speed of your computer and the complexity of the image, but that is not really a fault of the printer itself. Print quality is very nice and crisp. Be sure to have the "Toner save" feature on, since it doesn't detract from quality and claims to save you toner (I've never had it off so I don't know if it works incredibly well, but 6 college students were able to get a whole year's worth of readings and papers out of one full cartridge). Speaking of toner, it's very easy to refill with bottle toner bought off eBay or somewhere. Don't bother buying cartridges (they're more expensive than the printer itself). It also works well with my Macs (Tiger and Leopard) after finding the right driver. Don't know about Vista.Unfortunately, the printer jams pretty easily... when I'm not using it. I suspect my friends are just not as careful loading the paper as I am, because I have to keep pulling jammed sheets out for them but rarely have jamming problems with it myself. So just load the paper carefully (in straightened stacks, not one by one if you can help it). I haven't tried thick paper or envelopes, so I don't know how it fairs with those.Overall, this is a very good printer. There were a lot of rebate deals for it last year, but I've seen mostly its newer cousin with rebates this year, so I don't know if it is quite the deal as before.
