NEC MultiSync LCD1970GX
MultiSync LCD1970GX-BK Black 19 Review, by Laura Blackwell August 23, 2005
The $499 NEC MultiSync LCD1970GX impressed our jury with its clear text and rich color reproduction. In fact, it achieved the highest overall score by a 19-inch monitor that we've seen lately. Although it didn't receive the top number on any of our five text tests, it attained very high ratings on each of them. On our graphics screens, it reproduced color and detail admirably, nearly matching the high-performing Sony SDM-HS95P on most tests and narrowly beating it on our group portrait test screen. It earned a rating of Outstanding for both text and graphics.
Like its 17-inch sibling, the LCD1770GX, this 19-incher includes an unusual-looking button called the NaViKey, which resembles a cross between a notebook's eraserhead and a tiny joystick. It works much like either of those devices, allowing you to scroll adjustment menus up and down while keeping your eye on the screen.
The LCD1970GX's plain, boxy design and lack of visual accents may not thrill you, but it's the great screen that makes this monitor a looker. Good thing its height-adjustable stand makes it easy to bring the display to a comfortable eye level. Its lazy-Susan swiveling lets you show off the screen to anyone who comes up beside you. And if you're always plugging in USB drives, a digital camera, a PDA, or other device, you'll appreciate the four USB 2.0 ports.
Upshot: With clean-lined text, nice graphics, and a four-port USB 2.0 hub, NEC's MultiSync LCD1770GX should fill the bill for many common applications.

Strengths: Great monitor, and exact matching model of the one I already had.
Weaknesses: See "comments."
Overall: I bought a used monitor(I had to since I wanted a dual-monitor setup, and they discontinued the one I had); I was concerned about the condition of the monitor, so I sent them an inquiry as to it's condition status. They told me it had some minor "burn-in" spots, and mentioned nothing else. When I received the monitor, not only did it have the burn-in spots(which is fine, as they disclosed that), it also had a few dead pixels as well as a couple spots where actual chunks of the screen glass were missing!! As if it had been poked or nicked by something... VERY pissed and disappointed I wasn't told about these additional defects.

Strengths: Colors are amazing. Works great at most resoultions. Height adjustment and swivel and nice options. Opticlear is nice once you get used to it.
Weaknesses: Can't find any so far.
Overall: I have been shopping around for the most perfect monitor I could find and this has got to be it. Everything about this monitor is top of the line. Everytime somebody looks at it they are impressed. Although it is an expensive monitor it is worth the price.

Strengths: Brightness, Color Correction
Weaknesses: Price, but if you can find rebates, get this monitor.
Overall: This is my second LCD and second NEC monitor. This one is part of a dual setup with the NEC/Mitsubishi 2060SB (don't make this anymore and that is a shame). I keep the CRT since the color calibration is correct (esp for graphic manipulation). Dual setup allows me to do video editing on 1970, image editing on 2060. 1970 is easy to setup, cables sit nicely in stand and it takes up very little room. Viewsonics are nice, but my money's with NEC, hands down.

Strengths: Very nice glossy glare resistant screen & very bright to the point that it can be viewed even in direct sunlight; quick response.
Weaknesses: None so far. I have purchased two of these monitors and have not encountered any dead pixels or any other problems.
Overall: This is one of the nicest monitors you can buy right down to the last detail. The controls are very easy to use on this monitor. It is great for looking at photos, watching videos and routine software applications. It comes with DVI and super VGA monitor cables and inputs, and it also has USB ports on the perimeter, which is very convenient. The physical construction of this product is durable and very high quality; the support bracket is adjustable three ways, and it has covered channels to conceal the cables. This is an excellent monitor and I highly recommend it.

Strengths: Graphics quality, video quality, design/ergonomics
Weaknesses: Text quality is not quite what you'd get from a CRT monitor
Overall: This is a fantastic LCD monitor. Mine came with NO dead pixels! It has an outstanding response time, which is great for video. The graphics quality is pretty amazing for an LCD. Other LCDs with graphics that match the LCD1970GX cost much more, typically more than $700. For those who want an asthetically pleasing LCD monitor, NEC is the way to go. NEC maximizes your desktop space by keeping the overall height and width as small as possible - no extra plastic around the LCD panel here! The monitor also adjusts very easily. Strongly recommended, but shop a lot to find the best price!
