Canon Pixma iP4200
PIXMA iP4200 Photo Inkjet Printer (29 PPM, 9600x2400 DPI, Color, 42KB, PC/Mac) Review, by Paul Jasper September 27, 2005
The Canon Pixma iP4200 prints high-quality glossy photos quickly, but it's just as well suited for printing office documents. For $130, you get strong black text, double-sided printing, and dual paper trays. In our tests the iP4200 printed documents at breakneck speed, but the quality of its plain-paper output barely improved on that of its predecessor, the iP4000.
The iP4200's silver plastic case feels solid and looks less boxy than other recent Canon models. A direct-print port lets you print straight from a PictBridge-compatible digital camera, though--like most other inkjets these days--the iP4200 doesn't have a media card slot.
The iP4200 posted the best overall speed numbers of the five inkjets we tested in its group. Text printed at 6.9 pages per minute--one of the fastest rates we've seen from an inkjet--And plain-paper graphics emerged at a very fast 2.5 ppm. When printed at best-quality settings, our test photo emerged in just 56 seconds.
Along with the 150-sheet-capacity paper tray in the printer's base, there is an upright feeder at the back with a equivalent capacity; it's a convenient arrangement if you frequently switch between two types of media, such as plain paper and photo paper, or between different sizes of photo stock. A switch on the front lets you choose the default paper source, or you can select which one to use from the software driver. The built-in duplexer lets you create double-sided prints, but you'll be sacrificing speed for paper economy: The iP4200 waits about 15 seconds for the first side to dry before sucking it back in to print the other side.
This model's print engine resembles its predecessor's, relying on five inks from individual cartridges. You get dye-based ink for the regular colors and for the black used in photos. The pigment-based black ink used for plain paper documents comes in a larger (and more economical) cartridge.
In our print quality tests, color photos exhibited sharp details, even in areas of shadow, with plenty of contrast. Skin tones, however, appeared a little too vivid and had an orange cast. Our grayscale photo printed a little on the dark side, but showed good contrast and sharp details overall; skin tones in this print could have looked smoother.
Because it's a printer with office-oriented features, we expected the iP4000 to produce top-notch print quality on plain paper, but it fell a little short of this. Though text appeared dark and solid, we noticed misaligned letters in rows generated from multiple sweeps of the print head. Similarly, vertical lines wavered in our line art test, and we also noticed some strange diagonal patterns in blocks of close horizontal lines. In color graphics printed on plain paper, the posterization looked very similar to what the $50 Canon Pixma iP1600 printed.
Upshot: The Pixma iP4200 delivers high-quality photos, snappy print speeds, and useful office features, but print quality on plain paper could be better.

Duration of ownership: 35 Months
Strengths: good quality text
Weaknesses: expensive ink and a chip that prevents use of non Canon ink or refilled tanks
Overall: The problem with this printer is the chip on the ink tanks that prevents use of non-Canon or refilled ink tanks. The printer eventually [after the warranty has expired] refuses to recognize even Canon ink tanks. It stops printing and the only way to fix it is to install a brand new tank, but after a couple of months the printer won't recognize that tank either even if is still full.

Strengths: For me it has to be the duplexing capability. Also, ink is alittle more than half the price of the epson inks of my last two printers which went belly up on me at about a year. The inks seem to last alittle longer than the Epsons. It's easier, for me at least, to stop the printing mid-cycle than the Epsons. Flashing lights indicate low ink tanks (as well as an on screen warning). A slow blink means it's time to by new ink. Afaster blink means it's really really time for new ink. As for the media slots, I save all my pictures to my computer anyway and that has more slots than I know what to do with. And as for the foot print, it's not all that much pore than my last two printers.
Weaknesses: The pause to let the ink dry between sides is something to consider when printing large files. If I want something with alot of pages in PDF, I do the odd side / even side trick. Having said that, twice in the past month, when switching over a large stack of papers, the first page didn't go in straight and jammed. Make sure the papers are straight when loading.
Overall: After a little more than ten mounths, I still love it.

Strengths: Faster printing then my old unit
Weaknesses: Required cable not included. I was told I would save a lot on the price of ink but now that I have had this printer for well over a year I seem to spend far more then on my old HP.
Overall: Now that I have had this printer for well over a year I am not really as pleased with it as I expected. It seems to always be running out of ink and the over all cost of the ink is no where near what I had been told. The quality of the printing isn't always as good as I expected either. It's not a bad printer but it's not much better then my very old HP. I may be replacing this printer sooner than I expected.

Strengths: Very good with type and pictures. True to color and very sharp imiages
Weaknesses: A little slow
Overall: This is the best printer I've had. I just junked an HP7960 that cost 3 times as munch, used more ink colors and claimed to be the greatest photo printer when I bought it. The Canon IP4200 outperforms it in every way at one third the price.

Strengths: Separare ink cartridges, good print quality
Weaknesses: somewhat bulky
Overall: The Canon PIXMA iP4200 Photo Printer uses separate ink cartridges, which helps minimize ink waste. If you've ever had a printer before that uses a single catridge for all colors, you'll appreciate this feature very much. On top of that the cartrdiges are priced reasonably compared to its competition. I do wish that the printer's weight and footprint was less, but all in all, this is a good printer. Would buy again.

Strengths: Auto off, nice photo print quality, Consumer Reports Best Buy twice, seperate ink tanks.
Weaknesses: Doesn't accept media, doesn't print on CD's
Overall: None of those weaknesses make it a dealbreaker for me, for $99 that I paid it is a fantastic printer.I am not a power user by any means but so far the pictures I have printed are super and the text output is fine.I love that it shuts off, coming from a 5 year old HP that didn't and I always forgot. Keep an eye out for a low price, it fluctuates. I paid $99 and two days later saw it for $93 (both total w/shipping included) but the store I got it from would not honor their low price agreement. If you are looking for a ton of features like on printer viewer and print without a PC then this is not for you but I am thrilled with it. If I see it as low as $93 again I am getting one for my SIL.

Strengths: duplex feature, quiet, separate inks
Weaknesses: Does not have card slots, preview lcd
Overall: Hello all,Will compare it with my HP Photosmart 7960w. This canon prints 4x6 a little faster than my old HP model with roughly the same print quality. (HP a little better due to 8-color technology versus this canon's 5-color). It does have the duplex feature, although I hardly use it, but it's handy to have anyway. It is about as quiet as the HP. It doesn't have the card slots, but it's not that big of a deal since using the card slots on my HP is very slow! The canon is better than the hp in terms of separating their inks tanks. For the HP, they combines 3 colors for each ink tank. That means that if you run out of ink for 1 color on one ink tank, you have to replace the whole thing even though there might be ink left for the other two colors. The canon ink tanks only have 1 color, so it is much more economical to replace and print photo pictures. That's why I don't use my HP anymore because it costs too much to buy the inks. So for a great, economical, and inexpensive replacement ink photo printer, this canon can't be beat.
