Strengths: very reliable dvd burner, never had a failure yet!
Weaknesses: could be a little faster/ide cable etc. but i'm not complaining.
Overall: i would recommend this burner to everyone for almost anything...even though it could be faster at burning dvd...i think that for the price, the reliability of it's dvd writing capabilities is second to none....not even pioneer...like i said...never had a "burn failed" yet. :-)wake.

Strengths: Low Price for Sony brand name, paid about $60 at Newegg
Weaknesses: None
Overall: This DVD burner came with Nero Software, which has very bad tech support. Wrote 3 emails with no resolution, no toll-free number. $1.86 per minute to talk to someone. No way to load new label stock types. The burner had problems installing the black face plate. Had to call Sony to resolve. Sony had excellent support. Overall, we are very satisfied with the burner, but very disatisfied with the Nero software.

Strengths: Fast, yet very quiet. Includes two faceplates (black and white) to choose from. Nero 6 burning software.
Weaknesses: None, thus far..
Overall: This is my first time using a DVD Burner, and I'm glad to have purchased this one. It was an absolute plug-n-play experience for me with no problem installing or burning my camcorder recordings to the DVD.The provided Nero software makes life easier for first timers like me.Highly recommended!!

Overall: This is the first DVD burner I've ever used and I love this very much. It makes DVD in a superior speed with little noise. The only concern for me is how long this is going to last, though. But overall, I think my first experience in writing DVD is successful...

Strengths: Speed of DVD-R DL write times and great software offered (Full Nero Suite)
Weaknesses: missing IDE cable and slow write time for non DVD R DL media
Overall: This DVD burner is a great burner that definitely has great capabilities. Along with the software that is offered, the drive offers great performance when burning a DVD-R DL. The time it took to burn completely amazed me because I expected it to take a while so I left my computer screen off and did other work, only to my amazement that after 35 minutes it was done and the disc ejected automatically. And for the price I paid, I definitely got a great deal. Would recommend to anyone who wants to start out with their first DVD burner.
