Lexmark C522n
Lexmark C522n Review, by Paul Jasper November 2, 2005
The Lexmark C522n gives small offices ample features for a budget price of $499. It supports both PCL and PostScript. The vertical paper path, with stacked toner cartridges that are easily accessed from a fold-down front door, gives the printer a small footprint.
The main paper drawer holds up to 250 sheets of plain paper, up to legal size. A slot on the front allows you to feed different media a single sheet at a time. For $299, you can add a 500-sheet paper drawer. You can't add a duplexer, however.
This laser printer provides good performance for the price. In our tests the C522n printed text at an above-average 14.3 ppm and color graphics at a healthy 3.8 ppm.
Text quality was good overall, though some letters looked shaved off at the top. Fine italics appeared spotty, but bold characters were distinct. Color graphics printed too light and grainy, but had good shadow detail. Glossy photos showed the same washed-out look and a dithering pattern.
At the time of this writing, Lexmark hadn't set the price for the C522n's replacement toner cartridges. Lexmark ships the printer with 1500-page starter cartridges.
Upshot: Ample features and good performance make this model well suited for small offices, though print quality wasn't at the top of the heap.

Duration of ownership: 6 Months
Strengths: I was really impressed with this printer, for a very short time. It prints a heck of a lot faster than my old cheap multi-function machine. It is so big and heavy that I thought it would last forever. I am a small company that doesn't print a lot, but I wanted something that I could depend on for a long time. According to what I read, lasers are a lot cheaper per page than an ink jet to operate. I feel like I was duped.
Weaknesses: I haven't printed 500 sheets, and I had to buy black ink ( over $100 ). Now the machine is telling me I need to buy the other 3 colors at $120 each. When I asked Lexmark about this, they said all printers are shipped with "starter ink cartridges", and they don;t even offer a reduced price when buying all 3 colors at the same time
Overall: I think Lexmark is scamming everybody, and they think we are too dumb to say anything about it. They can offer their printer a little cheaper by cutting on the ink cartridges, ( cause they figure they got you anyway, since you have to buy their ink ) I am trying to find a way to fill the ink cartridges myself, and never give them any more of my money.

Strengths: Printouts fine.
Weaknesses: Prints less than 40% of 1,500 printouts as is stated on website before toner is out.
Overall: Very poor rating from me. Customer Service from Lexmark was TERRIBLE..Trying to give the run around! The website states for the C522n "Ships with 1,500 starter cartridge for both color and black.

Strengths: looks impressive
Weaknesses: not dependable, single feed for envelopes, very, very bad customer support.
Overall: I've owned this new printer for 6 days. It's worked for less than 2. First paper jam (regular laser printer paper 20lb) was easy to handle. But when I closed front of machine I got the error message that the yellow toner cartridge was missing. i followed directtions to reseat but it made no difference. Project halted until 3 days later when an onsight tech appeared. Spent half a day replacing circuit board. Ran about 20 lettters through it then fed the envelope for address (capable of single feed only) and it jammed. Pulled it free and closed up front to get the error message that the yellow cartridge was missing (hello!). Back on phone with the Indian tech shop...after 40 minutes they gave up saying they'd have to escalate the problem the next day. Next day: back on phone....I'm now without a printer for 4 of the 6 days. Finally they said they would send parts for me to install. What?! Do I look like I'm in the printer repair business?! Merchant said they would replace it but so far that isn't happening. I'm ready to write it off as a mistake and go to OfficeMax or Bestbuy (not ONLINE) and find something other than a Lexmark. They should have said "we're sorry you're having trouble and a new printer will be on your door step the next day...send us back the broken one at our expense...but they don't say that. They want consumers to try and fix their mistakes. I don't have time for that kind of service. NEVER, NEVER buy Lexmark! This is a piece of junk and I refuse to spend my time on the phone or replacing parts!

Strengths: Good printing and that is about it.
Weaknesses: This printer jams incessantly and makes my employees crazy. You cannot load an envelope in the thing without it jamming and you try to clear it and do everything you can and you have to restart it.
Overall: Also it takes forever to power up. To be honest I have owned a business for 12 years and I have never had so much problems with a printer in all my time , it jams jams jams and you loose time and productivity trying to get it unjam.

Strengths: Heavy machine that hopefully represents the way it will stand up to use. USB and Ethernet connectors, one year on-site repair service and all cartridges come with the unit.
Weaknesses: Cartridges are starter cartridges that will work for only about half the cycles of a standard cartridge. Documentation is all on the web or on a provided CD.
Overall: Lexmark stands by its products and I hope they will continue to do so. However, while trying to print an envelope using Word on a Macintosh, this printer failed the test. Lexmark and Microsoft will work on it. However, the presales documentation spoke to its compatability with Mac OS and Windows. The tech support at Lexmark, before I bought the printer, said it worked with glossy paper even though the documentation did not list glossy paper as an option. Price Grabber found the best price. They get a ten out of ten. Lexmark, so far, gets a seven out of ten for the C522n.
