Xerox Phaser 6120n
Phaser 6120n Review, by Paul Jasper November 2, 2005
The Xerox Phaser 6120n is priced low at $499, and delivers better graphics quality than the very similar Konica Minolta MagiColor 2450, which costs $200 more. Like the 2450, the 6120n supports PCL and PostScript. The two models' speeds were nearly identical.
In our tests the 6120n printed text quickly at 14.7 ppm. However, its color graphics speed was a disappointing 1.6 ppm.
Print quality was also a mixed bag. Text was very heavy, with blotchy edges. Color graphics displayed appealing contrast and accurate color, though they were marred by some fine banding. On glossy paper photos appeared somewhat grainy and hazy; however, they remained fairly attractive overall.
The 6120n has a 200-sheet paper tray; you can add a second 500-sheet tray for $299, though it handles only letter-size paper--you have to load envelopes and legal-size paper in the main tray. An optional duplexer will cost you $399.
Xerox rates the life of the 6120n's imaging drum more conservatively than Konica Minolta does for that of the 2450, which contributes to a higher estimated cost per page, for the 6120n, of 2.5 cents for black and 12.7 cents for color.
Installation was quick and easy, thanks in part to Xerox's thorough documentation. The control panel has a two-line LCD for setting networking and paper-handling options.
Upshot: Graphics quality is better than that of most other color lasers, but slow graphics printing and mixed print quality overall limit the appeal of this low-priced model.

Strengths: Quality of print good.
Weaknesses: Very expensive cartridges & multiple operating problems. Xerox replaced printer 3 times due to malfunctions. We finally just stopped using it because it wasn't worth the effort or the cost. Slow color printing & very noisy.
Overall: We have never owned a Xerox printer before & based on this experience, probably will not buy another. Even though they kept replacing it, ALL of the internal parts had to be transferred from the old to the new unit, which was time consuming. Added to the down-time waiting for the new unit to arrive, it just isn't worth it!

Strengths: * Color * Envelope printing * Easy network setup * Small size * Low price * Good picture quality * Web interface * Good print speed
Weaknesses: * Relatively loud * No auto-duplex * Slow full-color printing * Low paper capacity * No pass-thru printing * No LCD backlight
Overall: It used to be that purchasing a color laser printer meant missing a monthly mortgage payment. These days the availability and features are plenteous. The purchase of this Phaser 6120N replaces my current Tetronix Phaser 740N. Overall, it improves in some areas over my previous printer and I definitely consider it an excellent purchase. In the end it cost me only $187 versus over $1,100 I paid for the 740N just a few years ago.STRENGTHS* These days, unless you are doing only B&W for which you need high-speed output, a laser printer should have color capability. Color is the new B&W. With the low cost output of color, there is almost no reason not to utilize it. * Although I have not yet tried it, this machine is easily capable of envelope printing which was very important to me, especially since the previous 740 was rather difficult and always creased the envelopes.* Network setup took about three minutes after I assigned a static IP address. This machine is fully capable of utilizing DHCP if you prefer.* Very small size makes this wonderful for small spaces. It's about 50% smaller than the 740, both in terms of footprint AND weight. This printer weighs about 35 pounds as opposed to 80+ with the 740.* Price is excellent. As mentioned on numerous other reviews, these days it's cheaper to buy a new printer with consumables, than to purchase new consumables only.* Pictures looked surprisingly good, and I had high expectations coming off the 740. While the colors are not as vivid, photos and all other output was very good. Mind you, laser printers are not designed for photo printing, but if you were to print a brochure with a photo, it will turn out very well.* The web interface is helpful to check the status of your printer and perform various other printer-related tasks.* Print speed was a positive for me, since it averages about 15ppm for black, which is my primary use. This is slightly faster than my 740, and plenty fast for my printing purposes.CONS* This printer is pretty loud especially when it's printing. It is quite a bit louder than my 740. However, once the prints are done, it quiets right down. Overall, most lasers are not quiet so this isn't a dealbreaker by any means.* It would have been wonderful if auto duplex was included automatically. Then again for the price it's understandable it's not.* For full color photo prints I am only averaging about 2.5ppm versus the 5ppm the printer is rated at. Huge deal? Not for me - but maybe for you.* Feeder only holds 250 pages. That's a little on the low end if your printing a lot.* My 740 has a multi-purpose tray which provides a straight-thru paper pass. This was great for heavier stock paper. This printer only allows the curved pass.* While I am used to it, because my 740 did not have it either, no printer should be without an LCD backlight. Yet, this one and many others on the market still are.Overall, this printer is absolutely a 4/5. A little quieter and auto duplex would have propelled it to a perfect score. If you are simply replacing an inkjet that sucks money out of your wallet, this is an excellent replacement.

Strengths: Nice-looking output.
Weaknesses: Noisy. Seems slow to me. Cartridges are VERY expensive.
Overall: Ships with puny cartridges. Yellow and magenta ran out at the same time: After only about 1,900 pages color and 170 monochrome. Two new carts cost me $458.98 at the Xerox office nearby, plus $3 to park! (That's $225 each!) But I am told these are the high-content type that will last much, much longer. The kind that comes with the printer are only about $100 each, but they don't last long at all. I will buy my black and cyan carts on the Web for much less than retail (I hope), but this is really a BIG outlay for a home printer. You should have spares on hand because when the toner runs out, the dang thing just stops printing ? you can't even print in just black.

Strengths: Fast output; Good Color; Works well with Mac platform
Weaknesses: Toner replacement costs MORE than the printer!
Overall: I love this printer. It works great in my home office enviroment. Speed and quality are good! I have owned 3 of these printers. Set up is easy. Until the toner price falls to below the cost of the printer, I will keep buying new units versus replacing toner!

Strengths: Excellent job of color matching.
Weaknesses: Noisy, Slow, Noisy, Slow, and Noisy
Overall: The one I received was extra noisy because the toner carousel was banging against the front panel. Called xerox and received another printer through their quick exchange program. Little did I know that the replacement printer comes without power cable, trays, toner cartridges, imaging unit, etc. All those items need to be transplanted from original printer to the exchange printer. And that's what xerox calls the "quick exchange" program. Anyway, now I have a printer that works well, even though it is noisy compared to other color laser printers of same duty cycle.

Strengths: -Fast first page ouput.-Good overall Color printing quality, especially in text mode.-Well designed paper path. -Low purchase prioe. I paid only $251 delivered !
Weaknesses: Noisy, except ehn in power saving mode.
Overall: This purchase has really fit our family's need to provide color printing via our home network. We have been very satisfied by the quality of the printer color output. The design seems to have comprehended many features to accommodate a home office user: 1) Paper path design minimizes paper jam clearing. 2) Replenishable supplies are reasonably priced.
