Epson Stylus Photo R220
Stlyus R220 Photo Inkjet Printer (15PPM, 5760x1440 DPI, Color, PC/Mac) Review, by Paul Jasper December 20, 2005
The Epson Stylus Photo R220 costs just $99, but it omits many of the features that set photo printers apart from everyday inkjets. On the front panel, you won't find a color LCD or media card slots, and the USB 1.1 port located there connects only to a PC, not to a digital camera. (Another USB port is at the rear, but it also connects only to a PC and you can only use one of these ports at a time.)
The upright feeder at the rear of the printer holds up to 120 sheets of plain paper, but the output tray becomes full after just 30 sheets. On the plus side, the R220 can print directly onto specially coated CD and DVD discs, and you don't have to rearrange the paper tray because it has a separate tray that feeds one disc at a time. Unlike with most modern inkjets, aligning the print head is a manual process; you have to examine a test print and fiddle with some figures on screen. The R220 uses six individual ink cartridges.
The R220 prints faster than its predecessor, the Stylus Photo R200. However, like the Epson Stylus Photo R340 we reviewed at the same time, it can't keep up with its Canon and HP competitors. When timed in the PC World Test Center, the R220 printed text at a pedestrian 2.1 pages per minute and color graphics at just 1.6 ppm. Photos crawled out in 82 seconds.
On plain paper, the efforts of the R220 looked dismal beside the printouts from the other photo printers we tested this month. The R220's text was gray and spidery, with horizontal banding that was especially noticeable in large characters. Line art resembled pajama stripes composed of fuzzy, speckled lines, earning a Poor rating. Color graphics appeared washed out and blurred.
But on photo paper, the R220 produced some of the best photos of the bunch. Our panel of judges saw excellent detail in shadows and exceptionally vivid colors. Close up, we noticed a little graininess and exaggerated facial shading, but of no great concern. The grayscale test had a slight greenish tint, but showed plenty of detail and natural-looking tonal gradations. Both color and grayscale photos earned a Superior rating. However, some of our 4-by-6-inch snapshots showed a slight banding mark toward the trailing edge of the print.
Upshot: The Epson Stylus Photo R220 is a slow, no-frills budget printer that produces weak prints on plain paper, but wonderful photos on photo paper.

Strengths: Very nice photo quality! Nice text and Graphics!
Weaknesses: Uses ink fairly quick.
Overall: This printer is worth the money, depsite the negative comments you have read. I love the text and graphics the printer prints. I make a lot of greeting cards and I love the quality. My pictures I print are very very nice. I am happy with the details. The downside of this printer, and other Epson printers I've owned, such as the R200, after heavy use in a 9 to 12 months time, the printer gives an error message stating that a part will expire soon and that is not good. It is usualy the soak sponge for the jets.My R220 just died today and I just ordered the R260. I hope it doesn't use that much ink like I've read.I have an all in one Epson Cx3810 and I like the scan quality. The text is pretty nice too.EPson makes a great printer, I just wish the ink would be less expensive and have to replace less often, but I guess it depends how much you use it too. I give the R220 a 8.75! Almost a 9. ps...You can get great ink from oneink on ebay for 1/2 the price and that includes shipping!

Strengths: Cheap when you buy it.
Weaknesses: Slow as hell, buying 5 different color cartidges costs $70
Overall: Seemed a good buy when purchased for $100 at BestBuy, but the old rule of you get what you paid for still applies. The photo quality is good, but when the colored ink runs out, you have to shell $70 for all of the 5 different color cartidges!Until you do so, the printer won't print, even in black and white mode. The annoying epson utility will keep flashing reminding you to buy more ink and spend more money. In comparison, the color cartidge for HP comes in ONE unit, not 5, and costs $40 top, not $70.This is the last Epson product I buy.

Strengths: Tough little printer..images & colors blend well, good thought went into this one, inexpensive machine for a "C" note.
Weaknesses: Not quite as fast as I'd want...for an everyday....However the final results made up for it.Sometimes I just don't feel like going on an adventure-They say ink is expensive but (always obtions)
Overall: Astonishing! This little sucker can do it all, (then some) and come up smiling for more....This is a mind-blowing little home printer...Don't be fooled. it's satisfying (but for home)-for every day use...If you want a big time printer this is not it...still one can cozy up to an extraordinary home BBQ!

Strengths: Low cost per cover...so easy to use, the software is the best of them all for editing and fixing contrast etc just before printing
Weaknesses: None
Overall: I have been using this printer for DVD covers now for 2 months and can advise every one looking to replace the paper covers with ink to get this printer without any worry. I have done a minimum of 150 covers with one set of ink..the yellow and the black will let go first. That comes out to .40 cents a dvd...so it cost less than the paper that cost.20 and the price of the ink The result are just great and the software is outstanding. The problem that was mentioned in several reviews about the plastic carrier has been replaced and it works real well and i can see that the design is going to never break
