Epson Stylus Photo R340
Stylus Photo R340 Inkjet Printer (15 PPM, 5760x1440 DPI, Color, PC) Review, by Paul Jasper December 20, 2005
Like its predecessor, the R320, the $199 Epson Stylus Photo R340 offers many connectivity and file transfer options. Three media card slots let you print directly from most common media card formats and transfer images to your PC. You can use the direct-print port to print from a PictBridge-compatible camera. But you can also use the port to offload photos to a host of USB-connected storage devices, including hard drives, CD and DVD writers, and USB flash drives. If you have a Bluetooth-equipped camera phone or PDA, you may want to get the $69 wireless adapter.
The R340 has a 2.4-inch color LCD for previewing images and accessing menu functions; it's mounted in the center of the front panel. Though the screen doesn't swivel, it's angled upward for easy viewing. The R340's documentation is better than average, and includes a four-page quick reference guide to printing without a computer.
Compared to its rivals, the R340 skimps on paper capacity. Its single feeder holds only 120 sheets of plain paper, and Epson offers no optional paper tray or duplexer. The output tray holds just 30 sheets. However, the R340 does come with a front-loading tray for printing straight onto specially coated CDs and DVDs, a feature that competing printers from Canon and HP lack. Also, the R340 prints on discs from edge to edge, while its predecessor left a border at the outer edge and around the hole in the center of the disc.
Using its six individual ink cartridges, the R340 printed excellent glossy photos in our tests. Viewed close up, some highlights looked a little grainy and facial shading seemed exaggerated, but we saw plenty of detail in shadows. Our grayscale image didn't come out quite as well, and it had some brown and green tinted areas that gave it an almost sepia appearance. Plain paper was a different story. Text looked grayish and characters had very fuzzy edges. Line art looked so unappealing that it earned a score of Poor; it printed with bizarre stripes composed of speckled lines--reminding us of a string of beads. Color graphics looked washed out and blurry. The R340's text and graphics overall earned scores of just Fair, but photo quality earned a score of Superior.
In our speed tests, the R340 printed our color photo in 82 seconds. That's nearly twice as fast as the earlier R320, but still lags behind the two Canon printers we tested this month and well behind the fastest model, the HP Photosmart 8250, which output the photo in 29 seconds. At 2 pages per minute for text and 1.6 ppm for color graphics, the R340 is among the slowest of recently tested models.
Upshot: The R340 prints superb color photos and connects to a wealth of storage devices, but it's slow.

Duration of ownership: 5 Months
Strengths: good color almost lab quality photo, accept all storage memory cards, nice color lcd screen.
Weaknesses: Slow print spped
Overall: I replace my old Epson stylus 820 by the R340 and i'm not desapointed, I use it most of the time for photos, I'm impress by the cartridge it seem to print more then the previous models it take me 4 months of printing a lot of 8'X10' before i change the cartridges. I also like that it support all popular memory cards. For thise who like to print photos this the one. I print several reports and i found it o.k. for text but it slow tl print a full page of text, but all Epson quality photos printer i had have that problem.

Strengths: Individual cartridges, third party ink, LCD, photo quality, card reader
Weaknesses: none
Overall: The biggest plus is the use of indivdual ink cartridges for each color so that when one color runs out, only that color has to be replaced. Many other printers tend to use single cartrdiges with multiple colors which result in having to throw out the entire cartridge when one color runs out. In addition, you can find cheap third party ink that won't cost you much. Lastly, printed photos look great.

Strengths: Exceptional printing quality on either Epson photo paper or discs, reasonable ink usage, six individual ink cartridges.
Weaknesses: Epson PrintCD software is very limited with regard to importing graphics and designing disc labels. Sometimes the cd/dvd tray sticks while ejecting (a very minor problem). Low-ink reminder too soon.
Overall: Overall I would say that this is an excellent printer. I use it primarily for printing onto cds and dvds and am very impressed with the quality. In addition, there are some off-brand ink cartridges which are virtually the same quality as real Epson ink, so using them can save you a bundle if you print a lot, as I do. This is the best photo printer I have owned.

Strengths: Great crisp colors (both 4x6 and 8x10 prints). run over 120 cd/dvds through it and all printed without no problem and very professional looking "label" on cd/dvds
Weaknesses: The speed is not that fast.
Overall: I have owned this printer for a couple of months. It has been working great for me. If you need an all around printer and only do light to medium volumes of printing work, this is a good option.

Strengths: good quality on different photo papers,
Weaknesses: sensitive ink cartridge indicator
Overall: The R340 printer can print very good quality photo on different photo paper brands. I've tried HP, Canon, Fuji, Kodak and staples, results are good and consistent. And unlike those small, portable printers, this one can print not only 4x6 but also any size up to 8.5 inch wide and "unlimited" length. The Epson "bubble" technology gives the photos very good quality at any detail. The ink replacement indicator is sensitive. It asked me to change cartridge before it is totally empty.

Strengths: fast printing
Weaknesses: none
Overall: very fast printing on photos. Very good quality. This is the best Epson printer I have ever got. Also the price is good too. It is very good for home photo printing.
