HP LC3200N
LC3200N Review, by Alan Stafford December 20, 2005
Usually you buy a television to look at the screen, but the back panel of the HP LC3200N is pretty impressive too, as it has an incredible number of ports to which you can connect other equipment; it even has FireWire ports for showing footage from a digital video camcorder or exporting to a digital-VHS deck. The one addition we'd like to see is a second HDMI port (something that, of the group of TVs we tested at the same time as the HP, only the Dell W3201C provided).
You'll find a large selection of on-screen color controls, as well. Though this panel is made by Sharp and is very similar to the Sharp Aquos LC-32D6U, the HP set adds six-color hue, saturation, and image-value adjustments. (We couldn't take full advantage of those controls in our image-quality tests, however, because we use standard settings and a set calibration routine.) The HP set trailed the Aquos unit in overall image quality, though it came very close in high-definition programming and in DVD playback. As with the Aquos, switching to this set's alternate picture modes (most of which are customizable) gave us a more attractive image.
The LC3200N's screen, which is surrounded by a shiny black bezel, sits on a humongous silver base that makes the set very stable but isn't elegant. The speakers can mount on the sides of the screen, making the panel look even wider than it is. The TV has a Dolby Virtual surround-sound mode that's somewhat effective, but the speakers' audio quality is merely adequate. The long, thin remote control has cheap-feeling buttons, though they are backlit.
Upshot: The LC3200N didn't win our image-quality tests, but it does have a wide array of ports to connect racks full of equipment, and its extensive image adjustments should help you get the picture you want.

Strengths: Reasonably priced, lots of ports
Weaknesses: n/a
Overall: This HP TV is very similar to the Sharp Aquos, but has more ports and more color selection which I really like. The picture quality is suberb and the size of the tv is great for watching movies. It would be nice if this TV had a height and swivel adjustable stand, but other than that I reccommend this tv.

Strengths: picture quality, durability, design

Overall: This is a re-branded Sharp Aquos TV. I love the Sharp TVs, but the re-branded HP cost less (for me anyway), so I bought the HP. This is my first HD and 32" TV and I am very happy with this purchase. This TV has great vivid picture quality, various inputs/outputs, easy to set up, and user friendly. I highly reccommend this TV. I have not used this TV as a computer monitor.

Strengths: Picture quality. Tons of input and outpuit connections
Weaknesses: Remote
Overall: I use this tv for viewing HDtv over the air channels and also digital over the air channels. The picture quality for both is spectacular. Setup was quite easy. There is just about every imagineableinput hookup available for this tv. If you are thinking of using this a s a PC monitor than this is definitly the one for you. It has a DVI, HDMI, along with all the other usual inputs. I highly recommend this tv.

Strengths: Fantastic picture 1080i/720p Extensive color management, Tons of inputs including HDMI, DVI, and 2 components. Doubles as a PC monitor. Intuitive user display.Nice, easy to use, backlit remote
Weaknesses: Big clunky standWeak color settings out of the boxSpeakers are adequate, but can be removed to improve look of TV.
Overall: There's not much to complain about with this set. It's extemely attractive and and well designed. HP was smart in rebadging a Sharp Aquos, and improving upon it by giving it more flexibility. Detach the speakers and you've got a great looking set with a piano gloss finish. Great PQ and a myriad of inputs are a must have. But what I really like about this set are the small touches. For example, you can adjust color settings for every input. It has an exhaustive list of adjustable color and display settings. There's even a antenna signal strength meter for HDTV channels. HP built this set with great user flexibility in mind. Even though it doesn't support 1080p, this set should keep you happy for a long time.

Strengths: Lots of inputs, DVI, HDMI, iLink, cable card etc. Lots of control over color saturation, Tint and Hue. Adjustable backlight to acheive proper black levels. Decent SD picture, Excellent HD picture.
Weaknesses: Factory setting require tweaking to achieve the proper skin tones. There are no inputs on the side. Could be an issue with the cable length.
Overall: This unit was sitting next a 32inch Sharp Aquos in the store. The picture looked identical. The menus were identical, except HP has a few extra inputs and also 6 extra color controls. I have also read at some place that the HP panels are made by Sharp. I have owned the unit for 3 days, the SD picture from cable looks the same as my 32 inch CRT. It has adjustable back light that can be changed manually to adjust the black level. You also set the OPC that adjust brightness based on ambient lighting and viewing condition. Overall I love the picture on this TV. Setup was easy. I did not have to open the owners manual or the guide for the setup. One complaint that I have is that all the input are at one side of the TVs and with my setup, require extra long (5ft) long AV cables to reach the input from components.
