Panda Software PANDA SOFTWARE Titanium AntiVirus 2005 ( Windows ) Review

by Tony Bradley

This average performer is expensive for an antivirus product.

Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus + Antispyware produced middle-of-the-road performance results, and it lacks the basic capability to run a scheduled system scan. Add a relatively expensive price of $50, and you get an antivirus product less appealing than some of the others we tested for "The New Virus Fighters."

This product differs slightly from Panda Platinum 2006 Internet Security--the latest iteration of the full Internet security suite with network firewall that earned a Best Buy in our "Best Defenders" roundup of antispyware programs last year. Our detection and cleanup tests this time around didn't include spyware and adware but instead focused on the programs' ability to detect viruses, backdoor programs, bots, Trojan horses, and worms.

Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus + Antispyware, which costs $50, gets you combined antivirus and antispyware protection, but unlike with Trend Micro's PC-cillin suite, which costs the same, you don't get a personal network firewall. And if you want to schedule periodic virus scans, you have to upgrade to the full $80 Panda Platinum 2006 Internet Security Suite. The interface is functional, but is not exceptional at explaining configuration options.

Panda Titanium ranked fifth out of ten products overall in our performance tests. It ranked seventh in detecting backdoor programs, bots, and Trojans in our zoo collection of malware, and it ranked sixth in our heuristics tests using one-month-old data. However, the software blazed through our scan speed tests in just under 1 minute, 46 seconds on average, faster than any other product we tested.

Upshot: Panda Titanium 2006 Antivirus + Antispyware is expensive and just an average performer among the antivirus products we tested.

    Duration of ownership: 3 Years

Strengths: Fast, not on hackers' 'radar'

Weaknesses: Misses some newer malware, expensive

Overall Evaluation: I use the full Platinum Internet Security Suite, and I've been happy for the most part for the entire time I've subscribed. At various workplaces, I've used Norton and McAfee, and found they used much more system resources than Panda. Normally, Panda scans my entire system faster than Symantec scans my work PC, even though my work PC has none of the extra software we tend to add to our home systems, it has more RAM, a faster processor, and less than 1/4 the storage. I sympathize with the people who gave pooor reviews, because I did have to learn how to set up Panda. Once I educated myself, I stopped having problems with software connections, for the most part. When Panda is running well, you hardly know it's there. When it breaks down, you usually have to uninstall and start over. And tech support? If you're not already savvy, I'd recommend starting with something easier to use, because I've only ever received one email back from Panda in the entire 3 years I've subscribed! My main reason for writing this review is to let people know this is a fairly good product, but I have chosen to leave it behind once my current subscription ends.

    Strengths: Didn't identify any.

Weaknesses: Breaks windows update, breaks FTP, breaks power saver hibernate, verrrrrrry slow.

Overall Evaluation: I can't believe this product is touted for its speed. The initial scan of my machine took over 30 hours. McAfee, whtich this purchase replaced, finishes in less than 1 hour. What a waste of $45. I've uninstalled and will be going back to McAfee.
