Trend Micro PC-CILLIN Internet Security 2006 Home Security Pack Single User Review

by Tony Bradley

Previous PC World Best Buy falls short in heuristics and some malware-detection tests.

A previous version of Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security Suite earned PC World's Best Buy distinction in June 2004's "Bigger Threats, Better Defense" security roundup. This time around, however, disappointing performance scores outweighed superior interface design to drag this product's overall rank to ninth out of the ten antivirus products tested for "The New Virus Fighters."

Nevertheless, the interface was the best of the bunch. Clicking the clearly labeled icons on the left panel of the interface opens screens that allow users to configure and customize the software. What sets this version of PC-cillin apart from other antivirus products is its informative labeling of settings and features, and the extensive collection of configuration options.

In a few of our performance tests, PC-cillin performed poorly. For example, it came in dead last in our malware detection tests of backdoor programs, bots, and Trojans. Trend Micro says that the malware samples in our zoo are not indicative of real-world threats, so it has not spent resources developing signature files for these malware samples.

The product also came in last in our heuristics tests. While some competitors were able to detect more than 50 percent of backdoors and worms using one-month-old virus data, Trend Micro managed to catch only 6 percent. Trend Micro says that heuristics cause false positives and that the damage these false positives can cause outweighs the potential benefits of the heuristics. As a result, Trend Micro chooses not to focus on developing heuristics.

Upshot: PC-cillin Internet Security Suite 2006 has a superior user interface, but its has poor heuristics performance is poor and its ability to detect threats other than easily identifiable ones is limited.

Strengths: I am a Norton anti-virus user but then i still turn to Pc-cillin, becouse norton giving me a big problem example the cd-key and stuff. Pc-cillin fire wall can track almost everything, good interface, friendly user.

Weaknesses: I use Ad-Aware Pro it still can detact something the Pc-cllin cannot do,and mostly the fire wall can be very sensitive things that is not suppost to block. Example : hamachi or trying to install some games or software. The software can be said is left behind for the lates virus and adware.

Overall Evaluation: Is hard for me to search for the fire wall exception list interface can be improve and it is better they improve or upgrade more on the Adware, back door and gray area.. If this are done, i can give a Superior on the software

Strengths: Easy interface; great customization; easily disconnect from network when installing new software for which you must turn off you antivirus and other safty applications

Weaknesses: A bit intense for newbies -- but still worth the effort to learn

Overall Evaluation: After more than 15 years with Norton SystemWorks (including Anti-Virus) I am thrilled to have switched to PC-Cillin! Finally, our computers are Norton free -- and they do run faster and more reliably. The last straw was the inability of Norton to update its AntiVirus component and other features of SystemWorks. It just wouldn't install the updates. Calls to Norton's incompetent overseas tech support yielded the brilliant response of "Uninstall and then reinstall" --- which of course made no difference whatsoever on all 4 computers. So I tried the free 30-day trial of PC-Cillin Internet Security and was blown away with its relative ease of use (given its extensive capabilities), flawless updating, and the great control it gives over connecting to the Internet. A sheer joy to use! Goodbye Norton forever.
