Brother HL-1440
August 23, 2001
WHAT'S HOT: We found plenty of things to like about the HL-1440. Near the top of our list is the HL-1440's $300 price tag, which makes a laser printer as affordable as a high-quality ink jet. The HL-1440 also prints clean, smooth black text and even surprised PC World's review panel with good detail and shading on gray-scale graphics.
When the PC World Test Center retested the HL-1440 using Windows XP, its text-printing performance fell to 10.9 ppm. (It was previously clocked at 11.2 ppm on Windows 98.) But it prints graphics faster, at 5.8 ppm compared with 5.3 ppm before. While not the fastest printer on the chart, this laser has plenty of speed for an ordinary home office or even a small workgroup.
The Brother HL-1440 runs quietly and sits silently between jobs. Because the paper feeds from a tray under the printer and the prints lay flat on top of the case, there are no loose flaps to fall off or break. Though the 1440 lacks an LCD panel, it does have an easy-to-use control panel, uncommon in similar small printers without an LCD.
WHAT'S NOT: With only 2MB of memory, the HL-1440 might choke on complex print jobs. If you regularly print big jobs, you can bump up the memory to a maximum of 34MB. Another weak spot is the HL-1440's lack of expandability. This model does not support any optional paper trays. (Note: The HL-1450, another laser in this series from Brother, supports an optional 250-sheet feeder and includes more memory. PC World has not tested the HL-1450, which costs $350.)
WHAT ELSE: The HL-1440 supports an ethernet adapter, which Brother sells for an additional $299, so you can use it on a small office network, but you'd probably need to upgrade the memory to enjoy its best speed performance. If code geeks wander the corridors of your office, you could put them to work on the HL-1440's macro language to program complex print jobs. Or, for $499, Brother's HL-1470N offers an internal network adapter and all the perks of the HL-1450.
Brother doesn't provide a printed manual for the HL-1440, but you get clear, thorough documentation on the accompanying CD, with videos of how to set the system up.
UPSHOT: Limited paper capacity probably restricts the HL-1440 to home offices, but in that environment it's sure to pull its weight handsomely.

Strengths: Very fast printing. Very in expensive compared to others in its class. Can print letter and legal.
Weaknesses: can not print 11X17
Overall: I am using this for over two years with no problems. I print a lot. Per page, I found this to be least expensive per page. Some others commented about vertical lines after some time. This will only happen if you move the printer with the drum installed. There is a note that the printer comes with advising against this. Anytime you need to move the printer, remove the drum unit from the printer and install it after you move the printer. Otherwise you can damage the gears inside causing the vertical lines. As long as you follow this, it could be the best printer you ever had. You can also install extra 32 MB memory for around $10.

Strengths: Initial Quality Good, Easy to Use, Cheap Price, Good Technical Help from Brother.
Weaknesses: Bad Problems After One Year. Repair Costs Much More Than Printer.
Overall: I bought this printer because it had a good price. I was pleased with the initial quality. The memory was easy to upgrade. After 1 year the warranty expired. The printer began to produce random white lines. Brother personel tried to help via the phone. It was no use. I spoke with an official technician. He hates the brother laser printers because they malfunction and cost too much to fix. Want to buy a used Brother HL-1440? Never abused.

Strengths: Have not yet experienced what they might be
Weaknesses: Sporadic, erratic printing. Items in queue simply disappear with no error message - and no printout. Essentially unreliable.
Overall: Received as a gift. This had little use for 6 months, but when we started to use it more often, it went completely south. Jobs would not print, or the printer would spew 10+ pages with a line or two of code on them, and then a little bit of the job. Items in the print queue would appear to spool, and then go away, never printed - or the job would just stop. The 'help' desk tells me that the printer stopped working because it's 'out of toner' - but it's never printed enough that that could be the case, unless Brother plans to make a killing on 10% full toner carts. They have committed to sending more toner to resolve the issue, but my conclusion is, stick to HP or other known reliable brands.

Strengths: Print Speed, Feed Options
Weaknesses: Needed to upgrade memory
Overall: I have been using this printer for about 3 months and I love it. It feeds labels, and envelopes with ease. I just wish it was a color laser. The fact that it is simple to use is nice to.

Overall: I have had two of these printers over the past 3 years. Each worked well initially. However, after 1-2 yrs of use significant streaking began to appear on printouts. As has been mentioned before, the drum assembly costs more then the printer. Will not buy again.
