Sony Ericsson W600i
W600i Cell Phone (GSM, Bluetooth, 1.3MP, 256MB) Review, by Grace Aquino April 19, 2006
From a distance, Sony Ericsson's W600i looks more like a small shower radio than a standard cell phone. Up close, the handset--with its orange case and matte silver trim--looks very sporty. All things considered, it's a fantastic camera and music phone, but its call quality is mediocre.
To take pictures with this $300 Cingular phone (as of April 7, 2006, with a two-year agreement), you have to close it and hold it in landscape (horizontal) position. You can't use the camera with the cover open, which can be an annoying limitation. When the device is in landscape picture-taking mode, the shutter button is on the top right (technically, it's on the side panel of the phone), easily accessible to a user's index finger. It mimics the format of standard point-and-shoot cameras.
The W600i's 1.3-megapixel camera took great looking snapshots, compared to many other camera phones I've seen. My outdoor pictures were colorful and showed satisfactory detail. The camera offers flexible controls, including exposure and white balance adjustments. It also includes a panorama mode, which lets you stitch together three consecutive photos. My experience with this feature was mixed; in some cases the combined photos looked impressive, but others the images overlapped.
The W600i is part of Sony Ericsson's Walkman phone series, and in handling music it takes a few cues from its Walkman relatives. Transferring music involved installing the included PC syncing software, hooking up the phone to a PC via the bundled USB cable, and syncing MP3s from PC to phone. Unfortunately, though this process was reasonably straightforward, it was painfully slow. The phone comes with an FM transmitter dongle; the radio did a decent job of picking up local stations.
The W600i offers impressive sound quality. Compared to the ones on other phones, the built-in speakers had good volume level and produced sufficient depth. Just don't expect hi-fi: The audio quality is similar to what you'd get from a low-cost alarm clock radio. I enjoyed listening to tunes over the included earphones, where the volume level was even louder.
The phone's only weakness lies in its so-so call quality. In some of my conversations, people complained that my voice sounded faint. Part of the problem was a weak cellular signal in certain areas. Otherwise, the phone was comfortable and simple to use. The LCD swivels 180 degrees, revealing the numeric keypad inside. But because it lacks phone talk and end keys, you can't readily tell how to initiate a call.
Talk-time battery life was excellent, however, reaching the maximum 10 hours in our PC World Test Center tests without expiring.
In the end, I enjoyed using the W600i. It's fun to use for music, and it takes lovely snapshots to boot.

Duration of ownership: 1 Week
Strengths: 1) Mini Camera - 1.3Mpixels, Panaromic,Burst, Frames (frames is really cool as u have some 19 custom animated frames where you can put your face into like an elvis presley frame and your face in it), flash (acts like a flashlight as well), Tones, etc.. 2) mp3 player and Radio 3) Yahoo messenger (yes an actual yahoo msngr) 4) MobiTV (You can watch real channels like NBC, CBC, Discovery) on your mobile (service activation needed) 5) Picture/Video DJ (create your own pic/video/music DJ) 6) Loud Speakerphone (with the 'Effects' feature) 7) Loads of other goodies too. 8) Nice Mega Bass stereo earphones - Fits in your ears snuggly and avoids external noise.
Weaknesses: 1) Battery life to support all these functions. But not so bad as compared to other phones. Battery life by using the above functions frequently come to 5 hrs. 2) Fixed mp3 memory.
Overall: Simply Awesome. The future of the mobile phones is here. Color is sporty and can defintely draw attention. The Strengths can surely outweigh the Weaknesses. Go for this phone and enjoy the fun features.

Strengths: Excellent music quality. allows me to carry my favorite songs, bluetooth, camera, voice activation, good battery life, allows downloaded music to be used as ringtones. sporty design. Love the swivel.
Weaknesses: call quality is somewhat deminished. No AM radio feature. Tasks and calandar cumbersome to use. takes long time to input and change from one month to the next. Only 254 MG of memory.
Overall: I love this phone. I bought this for its camera and musical capabilities. I don't call much but I do keep my phone around me and it helps me pass the time. The included headphones are great. I can mow the lawn while listning to music instead the constant hum of the lawnmower. The light/flash is a geat feature. Downloading music is very easy with the included software. Wish there was more memory. This is my first bluetooth equiped phone and I love it. Wife has a Razr and it is a piece of junk next to this phone.

Strengths: I enjoy the versatility of the music, camera, and video camera. I have used the light in a pinch or two. I love the color and the fact it comes with a second cover. I have never had any trouble with calls.
Weaknesses: the arrangement of the speakers is kind of odd. Depending on how you stand it up, you get decent volume but not really huge volume.
Overall: This is a fun phone to play with and personalize. The features are a lot more fun than my last phone's. Would recommend a few new colors as the year goes by. Maybe goldish. needs to stay charged for longer periods

Strengths: Design, faceplates, MP3 Player!!!
Weaknesses: call speaker is too low, poor camera quality
Overall: This is probablly the best phone I have ever purchased to date. It has so many features that always come in handy. The OS feels natural and the buttons are situated perfectly. The MP3 player is the best feature of this phone and the built in 256mb or memory. The downside is that the memory isn't expandable. Another positive is the two loud speakers that blast like crazy. The camera is disapointing being that its 1.3MP, the pictures come out big but super grainy. The flash is great because I always use it as a flashlight. Overall I love this phone.

Strengths: Good sound w/ MP3 function. Good picture. The phone comes with the versatile function.
Weaknesses: Bulky and relatively heavy. Swival design is not convenient. Limited 258MB memory. Keypad looks filmsy.
Overall: It is a good phone so far, but if the camera could zoom better, it would be nice. The keylock does not work sometimes. Personally, I like Nokia. But this model provide a decent option for this price range.

Strengths: Good Battery Life, unique color
Weaknesses: A little thick. No memory card slot. I haven't been able to continue from where I left off after I stop and exit the mp3 screen. Maybe I just need to read the manual.
Overall: I gave up my Motorola Razor and got this phone. It has a lot more functions than the Razor, like MP3 player, 256mb memory, flashlight, etc. I like the swivel design, but wish it rotates 360 degrees instead of 180 degree. Standby time is about 7 days. I don't use the phone too much so I can't say what the talk time is. This phones gets a lot of attention from other people because of its color and unique look.

Strengths: Great interface, clear reception, loud speaker, attractive look, sharp screen
Weaknesses: The microphone picks up a lot of ambient noise, which makes conversation very difficult when in a loud environment; phone occasionally resets
Overall: Overall, the w600 is one of the best phones I've ever owned, and if I could go back I would definitely make the same purchase again. The strengths of the phone far outweigh the weaknesses.

Strengths: call quality, overall ease of use, many features, radio, mp3, timer, stopwatch, voice message (also has text, voice mail, email etc. ) light ( flash / flashlight)
Weaknesses: low light pictures poor. & lighting settings on camera are more time consuming to use. dosent play radio without the plug in wire / alarm clock only has two alarms
Overall: I have always had Motorola phones but my last one was so bad it had to be replaced 4 times in one year ( kept dropping calls couldn't keep a signal even with cell tower in view.) all the other features on the Motorola worked fine. (their intelligent text is better than Sony's I selected the Sony after a family member had another type of Sony and loved it the call quality and reliability was always superior to what I was using. This phone has been wonderful - I have many great things to say about it. First the phone hasn't dropped one call - messages go out quickly and down loads take about half the time as previous phone (only a year older than this one) The picture quality in good light is awesome, the features like stop watch and settings for rings are great. I have tried many phones before deciding on this one and selected it because of sound quality - features - and PRICE. I had read many review about this phone and wanted to add mine as one praising this for its great options- it does alot but does them well. MP3 has computer link thru USB that is so easy to use even I could figure it out. minor issues- intelligent text ( you type the word and it selects the letters for the best option - and dictionary are not as good as others I have seen and take up too much space over your message- easier to just type in the letters and select yourself) still haven't figured out how to update my calender from computer to phone and visa versa, has USB port and link to computer that came with it but seems that it was mostly for the MP3 rather than for other features on phone ( but i didn't get a PDA so what did I expect) I had seen other review that claimed it didn't do this or that but so far I have found a way to do everthing that some others said that it wouldn't ( you have got play with it - its loaded with little short cuts and or just read the manual or visit the sony web site for a tutorial it was quick and worth my time) radio works great even auto selects up to 20 stations ( thats more than we have worth listening to in this town) but wish i didn't have to plug in the port to activate it ( the 3 speakers will let you listen with out the head phones but have to have that antenna plug in ) was worth my time and money- however my worry is that the LCD display will fade the colors in a few months like some of their other phones. and the lighting isn't adjustable.
