LN-S3251D 32" LCD TV (16:9, 1366x768, 4000:1, HDTV) Review, by Alan Stafford April 18, 2006
The Samsung LN-S3251D is a much more attractive television than the company's LN-R328W set that we tested before it. The two models have similar features, with mostly comparable connections. However, the LN-S3251D received a better rating thanks to its very high image quality scores and slightly more adjustability to its cabinet.
In our image-quality tests, the $1799 (on 3/24/06) LN-S3251D easily topped other recently tested LCD TVs. The LN-R328W, which we included in this batch as our reference model, came in a distant second overall. The newer unit made a big impression with its very bright screen, which contributed to its large margin of victory in our bright-lights test. But it also scored substantially higher than the other sets we looked at in our high-definition, standard-definition, and DVD tests. When tested, The LN-S3251D earned PC World's top rating for color quality, with a score that was 10 points higher than that of its closest competitor. As for sound, its speakers have adequate clarity, but bass frequencies lacked presence.
The cosmetic difference between the two Samsungs is dramatic: The LN-S3251D has a beautiful, shiny-black cabinet, which swivels nicely on its base. The LN-R328W has a drab gray cabinet, and it doesn't allow any adjustments whatsoever. The LN-S3251D has a long, thin, attractive remote control--the buttons aren't illuminated, but they have white lettering that helps you see what you're pushing. You can even press a button to freeze a live image. Some of the buttons at the bottom--mostly for picture-in-picture--are too tiny, though.
The LN-S3251D has two HDMI inputs (the LN-R328W has only one), one set of component ports, and two S-Video inputs (one on the side, for showing camcorder footage). But it does not have a CableCard slot, so you'll have to use a set-top box for cable or satellite sources. The LN-S3251D will let you control an iPod (with an optional interface), but Samsung didn't provide an iPod connection kit, so we couldn't try out this feature.
One annoyance: You can use picture-in-picture to juxtapose one HDMI input and one analog input, but you cannot do that with two HDMI sources. Samsung says that it's a technical limitation, and that it does not foresee people alternating between two HDMI sources.
The menu system on the LN-S3251D is much more attractive and useful than that of its predecessor. You can adjust the opacity of the menus so you can see the picture you're trying to adjust (but unfortunately, you can't make them totally transparent, as you can on Dell's W3201C). A graphic equalizer function lets you fine-tune the audio. Also, tooltips in the menus explain what settings do.
Upshot: The Samsung LN-S3251D is slightly more expensive than the company's LN-328W, but the premium gets you better image quality, a second HDMI port, and some adjustability. It'd be even more appealing with a CableCard slot, though.

Strengths: This LCD HDTV rocks and for the price it is hard to beat for the quality you get. The picture is superb, the contrast and color in HD is just totally awesome with my Dish Network system. Even the blacks are really dark. I recommend using the component cables for video and not HDMI as the color will be down graded some and the blacks tend to fade and get pixely. As far as using it for a computer monitor it will be fine to use the HDMI.
Weaknesses: I have heard various complaints on the sound but when you have such a thin TV what do you expect. I actually think it has not to bad of sound for the demensions it has. Most people who want such a TV usually have a Home Theater System as I do to give the sound they really want to hear. As far as any other weaknesses that i can think of their really isn't any and i have used this LCD TV for quite some time now and put it to use everyday.
Overall: In my opinion Samsung has done a fine job in their new line and as technology gets better they will too. I have nothing bad to say about this LCD HDTV and I suppose if they wanted to try and make better sound come out of it, it might be kind of hard because of the tight space. You can't have everything unless you maybe spend $1000's of dollars and even then one might not be totally satisfied. Give this LCD a chance and for the one's who purchased it and it didn't work, that's life and mistakes do happen and electronics do fail and I'm sure they replaced it with one that did work.

Strengths: Nice looking TV, The picture was great. Even SD channels looked very good.
Weaknesses: One problem-it just died after a week.
Overall: Nice looking TV, The picture was great. Even SD channels looked very good. One problem-it just died after a week. I took it back to Best Buy without a problem and got the 40" Samsung (LNS4041D). So far that's very nice. I'm glad I got the bigger TV.

Strengths: Price, great contrast, picture, and it looks good with any decor. Lots of inputs and 2 HDMI inputs. Relatively light and sturdy stand.
Weaknesses: Not many! Remote is a bit awkward to hold and does not work from accross my bedroom about 15 feet away. Sound from the internal speakers could be a little louder and clearer.
Overall: This is my first HDTV and it is great!! I've compared other HDTVs and this one has the best picture and colors for the price. It does not display 1080i native, but the 768p is really good for gaming and watching movies with action. I've already played Call of Duty 2 and Half Life 2 Episode 1 on PC, and they both looked better than on my 24" 1920 x 1200 Dell monitor! This TV was built for PC and console gamers in mind. I connected a $12 Phillips antenna to it and I can get at least 20HDTV channels here in the SF Bay area for free. Awesome! As for the lack of displaying 1080i or 1080p, those sets cost a lot more and this is great for a starter set or a gaming set. I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend this set to anyone looking for a quality affordable HDTV. Since it is not the latest model, you can probably pick one up on sale at a reduced price like I did.

Strengths: Dont know, did not work out of the box!!!!
Weaknesses: Wont even light up. Picture quality, what picture?
Overall: Ordered one in from Buydig.com never worked even for a minute. Samsung said to wait 14 working days for them to find a person to service it. After 14 working days they said that they would e-mail the person right now and it would take another 2 days for a call. Sill waiting!!!!!Looks real nice on my office floor collecting dust. Buy local or not at all!!!!!!!

Strengths: 2 HDMI inputs, 4000:1 contrast ratio, iPod interface, swivel stand.
Weaknesses: remote control not entirely backlit, unusual shaped TV cabinet.
Overall: Although I would have proffered the traditional rectangular shape cabinet of the LG 32LC2D or the Panasonic TC-32LX60, the Samsung LN-S3251D overall features blows them out the water for just about $100 more. It starts with a 4000:1 contrast ratio, and 2 HDMI inputs. A swiveling stand that travels much farther than the Panasonic, making it very easy to access the side S-video input and TV controls. The remote, although not entirely back lit, is universal and requires not programing to control existing Samsung components. The only thing that may be a bit of a drawback is the V-shaped cabinet. specially for wall mount purpose. The high gloss black finish may be a bit too reflective and distract from the picture, but it comes with a micro-fiber cloth to help keep finger prints free. Overall one of the best 32" LCD's in the market today.

Strengths: Great picture, good audio
Overall: I found that the PriceGrabber information listed under product details, to be incorrect. It is indicated that this Samsung model has "dual tuner PIP." After purchasing this Samsung model, I found that much to my disappointment, the unit is not equipped with this feature.
