Vizio L32HDTV
L32 HDTV Review, by Laura Blackwell April 18, 2006
The Vizio L32HDTV has more going for it than a very logical name. This 32-inch LCD TV delivers good image quality in an easy-to-understand package, and it's priced at a very low $1000 (on 3/24/06).
In our image-quality tests, the L32HDTV did well for itself. In fact, its overall performance score edged out those of TVs from better-known--and more expensive--brands such as the Sharp Aquos LC-32D6U and the Sony Bravia KDL-V32XBR1. It ably handled the skin tones and rich colors on our test DVDs, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Seabiscuit. Our test jury liked its color balance on standard-definition and HDTV quality. When tested at defaults, the L32HDTV earned its lowest marks on our TV brightness and contrast tests; its picture generally looked somewhat dark at default settings. (Vizio recommends using the Vivid 3 screen mode for watching under bright lights.) Its audio didn't thrill us; you'll almost certainly want to crank the bass up from the default, and even so, it doesn't provide a rich surround-sound experience.
Nobody wants to drop a thousand bucks on a TV they can't connect properly. Vizio seems to understand that. Not only are the inputs clearly labeled, but the accompanying documents help you make sense of them. A large, full-color poster depicts all the inputs and their uses, and the manual offers up a wealth of detail in both words and images. Both poster and manual flog Vizio's own installation plans, but at least neither implies that these plans are required.
Once past the installation stage, the L32HDTV gets even easier to use. The remote is unusually intuitive, requiring no knowledge of esoteric TV terms. Its on-screen menu is basic, but functional. My only real complaint about this model's usability is that your hand covers the button labels when you press the buttons, which sit underneath the bezel.
This Vizio includes an over-the-air ATSC tuner, but no CableCard slot. If your high-definition TV signal comes from a cable or satellite content provider, you'll need to use a set-top box. Its sole S-Video input sits on the side of the bezel, next to a headphone jack and one of three composite inputs. Its one HDMI input lives on the back of the unit with the other inputs. Though well-labeled, those inputs are mounted at about 90 degrees--parallel to the floor--making it a little difficult to plug in devices.
With a wide black bezel, a silvery stand, and silvery speakers, the L32HDTV appears pretty ordinary. The finishes look plastic and unexciting, but that's to be expected for a budget model.
Upshot: Given the low price and the pleasing image quality, it seems nitpicky to call the Vizio L32HDTV anything but a steal.

Duration of ownership: 1 Year
Strengths: Good picture
Weaknesses: Owned my Vizio for just over a year and it broke down. It would cost more to fix it than buy a new one.
Overall: I called Vizio to see if they could help me with a discount on a new Vizio, as my Vizio only lasted just over a year. They said after it is out of warranty there was nothing they could do for me. These TV's are cheap for a reason.

Strengths: Great LCD screen with a lot of features for not a lot of money!
Weaknesses: The remote control is difficult to hold onto and push buttons when only using one hand.
Overall: I hadn't heard of the VIZIO company until this 32 inch television was recommended to me. After comparing with other similar products this was certainly a best buy. I would recommend it to others who want to get into an LCD screen with out a lot of expense. Also like the fact that the company is based in California.

Strengths: Great graphics,Amazing sound,Easily understood manual/instruction
Weaknesses: Control a bit complex to follow sometimes,Extra cords need to be purchased if connection to computer is to be made
Overall: This is a great choice of LCD TV. It's my first one but I have fall in love for it. Great graphics and sound system. Looks even better when used to play video games. Definitely thinking of getting HDTV from cable subscriber to further test the functions of the TV. It totally change my view for flat panel television. Go and buy one now!

Strengths: Picture clarity, color after adjustment, very good dvd 480p quality (upconversion?), above average sound, low power consumption, compact size and clean lines.
Weaknesses: Only one HDMI and no DVI input... but who's complaining at $870. Serious red push out of the box easily corrected.
Overall: After 4 months of research and watching prices on medium size flat-panels plunge, finally pulled the trigger on just about the cheapest one out there. Saw the Vizio at Costco and its over-all picture was as good as the pricier 32" Phillips LCD. Found two very positive mag/emag reviews last week (CNET ranked it 3rd!) but the clincher was the associate at Costco who said none had been returned since they started selling it in April. He was brutal about some of the other brands so it seemed like a decent bet...not to mention Costco's three year return policy. The remote is capable and works with a Comcast HD cable box and aging Panasonic DVD-F65 player so I'm happy. Connections on both currently through component cables and the picture, especially HD, is excellent. Even standard analog cable is better than on my former 8 yr old Sony 32". Can't wait to see how the signal looks through the HDMI. It's in the bedroom and usually watched at night. These User Mode picture settings work best on my set: Backlight 65, Brightness 55, Contrast 80, Color and Tint 35 (corrects over-saturation and red push), Sharpness 100. The sound is clear even at low-moderate volumes with a decent surround effect. The simple unobtrusive design with matte black bezel is handsome and looks good in the room. The Vizio is a great deal and the quality of the set's exceeded my expectations. Hey, Sony and Panasonic were new brands at some point too. Check it out.

Overall: POUND FOR POUND , DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR, THIS IS THE BEST I HAVE SEEN. I HAVE COMCAST DIGITAL CABLE WITH HDMI CONNECTION AND THE HD SPORTS AND NETWORK SHOWS ARE FANTASTIC. YOU CAN PAY A LOT MORE AND GET A LOT LESS.

Strengths: Price, quality of picture (especially color), weight and dimensions
Weaknesses: Remote could be designed better, appearance is not as attractive as some other sets
Overall: I have been tickled with the purchase of this set. For the price you pay for it you get INCREDIBLE picture and sound quality. Could it be better? Probably, but you'll pay more for it. Yeah, it looks a bit more clunky than other sets and the remote is a bit cheesy, but I'll take functionality with a lower price over aesthetics with a higher price any day I was a bit nervous at first buying this set as I hadn't really done my homework regarding Vizio's quality, but on the backside I have seen very few negative reviews and some moderate reviews, but mostly all positive. I would recommend this set to anyone looking for flat panel HDTV on a smaller budget.
