Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security
PC-cillin Internet Security 2006 - 3-Pack (Full Product) Review, by Narasu Rebbapragada May 20, 2006
Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security 2006 is a full-featured suite that runs light on your system. Its security protection is good, although not as stellar as that of some of its competitors.
Trend Micro's $50 (as of 4/15/06) suite is one of the most full-featured packages around. It offers solid antivirus, antispyware, and firewall protection, plus antispam capabilities, Wi-Fi-network protection, privacy settings, and parental controls (under the name Web Site Filter) that many users will find useful. PC-cillin Internet Security also has network-security features that can scan remote computers (assuming you buy one of the multilicense packs), as well as an antifraud toolbar for safer Web surfing.
I found PC-cillin Internet Security one of the easiest security suites to use. Its personal firewall configures quickly for a home network. Its antivirus settings pack a lot of options, such as how deep within compressed files you want to scan. The suite also explains some intermediate-level options--for example, while most programs let you choose whether to scan within compressed files, PC-cillin Internet Security takes the extra step to explain that a .zip file is an example of a compressed file. The malware warning dialog boxes that I encountered were clear, and each provided a file name, file path, and action taken. However, though the software does attempt to describe the malware, I wish it used layperson's terms in case the detection name--such as "ADW STATBLAST.A"--didn't mean anything to me.
In performance tests conducted by AV-Test.org, Trend Micro's suite ranked eighth out of the ten security suites we looked at. It failed to detect two file viruses on the WildList, a published list of malware that any security product should be able to detect completely. Other than that, PC-cillin Internet Security didn't tank on any specific test; it just didn't shine in any particular respect. The lone exception is speed, as PC-cillin Internet Security offered the second-fastest scan speed among the suites we tested (Panda's software was the fastest).
Overall, Trend Micro's suite is solid and easy to use, but some of its competitors are better at detecting today's malware.

Duration of ownership: 8 Months
Strengths: Nice layout, reasonable easy to use, but....
Weaknesses: Customer service the worse I have ever experienced! If you have problems with Trend Micro programs and need technical support you are toast!
Overall: Worked reasonably well for ~3 months, then the anti-spam wouldn't load properly. Response from customer service typically took 5-7 working days. Solutions offered for anti-spam problem did not resolve issue. After 2 months of going back and forth I suggested, in consideration of all the time spent on trying to find a solution, they upgrade me to 2007 version. Trend Micro agreed, provided the link to the upgrade, but my old license number would not work. The Trend Micro solution to this was to go back to 2006 -- which, of course, was unstable from before. The customer service guidelines for correcting problems were typically written for different versions of the product or for different products completely. I am off to a competitor and would not recommend Trend Micro under any circumstances.

Strengths: No better than other products of the same nature.
Weaknesses: Pop up update screen disrupted work in progress. Update and scans did not work in the background and slowed machine to a crawl. Continued calls to customer support brought no help. Refused to refund when I gave up.
Overall: There are much better products. This product caused me continual grief. The tech support was weak and never went to whatever was causing the problem. First they told me to download the program again. When that didn't work they wanted me to start removing any other programs I might have on my machine which were involved in removing spyware, viruses, etc. In other words, remove all my other defenses in hopes that their program would ultimately work. When I removed the program, and installed another program, all my problems disappeared. I recommend checking other reviews of this program before investing in it. My experiences were not unique.

Strengths: Very easy to use and setup. Seems to catch most malware. Had no problems with any malware.
Weaknesses: Support is awful I had a problem and it has been two weeks and no solution to the problem. It took a hit and told me to reinstall. Could not get it reinstalled. Had to go to another vendor for protection.
Overall: I would not recomend this product to any one.

Duration of ownership: 2 Years
Strengths: Totally user friendly. Does not hog system resources. Easy to install. Perfect for use if you're behind a router as you don't have to worrry about every little thing pinging you anyway but if something slips through you're protected.
Weaknesses: None.
Overall: I've used Norton (resource hog) , Panda (resource hog), and Zone Alarm (too geeky, was better before CA aquired it) Suites over the past years as well as stand-alone AV and Firewall software and this is a great package for the user who's not a "geek"...also, I've received excellent upgrade/renewal rates contrary to PC World's comments to in other reviews. Only an idiot would have problems with this package, it's so seamless in installation and use!

Duration of ownership: 1 Year
Strengths: Extremely well made design, easy to use. You may scan individually for virus, spyware or both. It has vulnerability checking included (not all patches are covered). Its update is functioning well not like some of troublesome updaters like norton's liveupdate. You can see computers hooked up in your WiFi connection
Weaknesses: A bit late in catching malware but easily gets it (referring to the updates). The firewall needs to be more stronger like adding IDS or SPI. A bit of hog but it stands between a hogger and light-resource user.
Overall: This is a better buy if you're planning to switch from Symantec and McAfee, relatively cheap, ease of use and a bit lighter on the resources.

Strengths: none I see for my XP config. NORTON STAND ALONE fw AND nav WORK GREAT, pc-CILLIN CRASHES BOTH MY SYSTEMS, HAD TO EVEN UNINSTALL sp@ AND IT STILL DIDN'T WORK
Weaknesses: central panel is cumbersome. conflicts with some xp configuratioNs (CK WITH ms). crashed both my systems. company refuses to refund!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall: can't speak to other than there is a knowN MS config that conflicts with this program. crashed both my systems. tech support is terrible. IT SEEMS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A RFUND. ENDLESS EMAILS, NO RESPONSES, TREND MICRO MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A REFUND WHEN THE INSTANCES OF CONFLICT OCCUR. SIMPLY PUT, IF THE MERCHANDIZE IS BAD YOU'RE STUCK WITH IT. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WOULD I EVER RECOMMEND PURCHASING THIS PROGRAM RETAIL BECAUSE YOU'LL PROBABLY NEVER GET YOUR $ BACK IF IT FAILS/. TRY ON LINE BUT FROM MY EXPERIENCE WITH TRAND MICRO THE COMPANY IS TERRIBLE RE RESPONSIBLE ACTION. Don't fault the company because program may not work in some instances, do fault the company because they tell their clients ... scxrew you, you own it.

Strengths: Resource saving: CPU, RAM, HD space...
Weaknesses: Try to put eveything togather
Overall: I've used PC-Cillin for 2 years, I'll say it's much better than Norton, McAfee. It's relatively small and resource saving, it's faster and most of all - it kills more virus/spyware than Norton and McAfee!!!After I installed the PC-Cillin, my computer crashes less, gets infected less (virus/spyware) and re-install less.

Strengths: Excellent protection & product support. Does not interfere with functioning of other programs. Great wireless support, diagnostics, anti-spyware, anti-spam. Terrific information & solutions.
Weaknesses: Like all the other antivirus programs, you need very good computer resources (e.g. at least 500mb ram) to keep from slowing your machine down.
Overall: I have used all 3 major antivirus programs and own multiple licenses for all in all typical uses: travel, home, and at my business. Trend Micro is by far the best in all regards. It does not interfere with other programs (which Norton does). It seems to have a very high 'prevention &/or catch rate' for viruses and spyware. You can get a multi-computer license for home use (including your wireless) for a very good price. The price includes all of the annual updates, phone as well as internet support, and a superior performing program. Highly programmable concerning preferences and ease of setting. Does a better job of preventing specific viruses than our experience with McAfee. I have used all 3 programs for 4 or more years and McAfee & Norton for at least 10. I can rate this a best buy!
