SanDisk Sansa e260
Sansa e260 Review, by Eric Butterfield May 19, 2006
The SanDisk Sansa e260 looks a lot like an Apple iPod Nano--from the front. It's roughly as tall and wide as the Nano, it has a big color screen, and its thumbwheel is surrounded by four navigation buttons. Priced at $229 (as of 4/13/06), the 4GB e260 costs $20 less than a 4GB iPod Nano.
The e260 offers some attractive extras the iPod Nano doesn't: a built-in microphone, an FM tuner, a bigger color screen, PlaysForSure compatibility for online music subscriptions, video playback, and a microSD Card slot so you can expand the memory (a 1GB card costs about $50). Also, you can change the rechargeable lithium ion battery yourself,
Despite the similarity in size to the Apple player, the e260 is more noticeable when in a shirt pocket. It's almost twice as thick as the iPod Nano, and is significantly heavier (2.7 ounces vs. 1.6 ounces). The e260's mechanical thumbwheel is convenient for scrolling through long song lists but can be difficult to turn. Also, because it protrudes from the faceplate, I found it difficult to get to the navigation buttons when operating the player with one hand. In addition, the e260 is slow to start up, taking about 8 seconds.
In PC World's new audio-quality tests, the e260 scored lower overall than any other flash-based player. Our test equipment measured more noise in the e260's audio than we found in the other players (the iPod Nano was the least noisy). The e260 also produced slightly more distortion than the iPod Nano, but less than that put out by a few other players we tested.
The e260 comes with Rhapsody software, but will also work with the Napster and Yahoo online music stores.
Radio reception from the FM tuner wasn't terribly clear when stationary, and I heard a lot of static when traveling in a car. The recordings I made of FM broadcasts were less impressive than the original broadcasts--some files were quieter on playback, and some had significantly more static than I heard originally.
The e260's screen is big, and photos look great on it. Sample photos are variously oriented horizontally or vertically, which requires you to turn the player during the demonstration slide show. But all the photos I loaded displayed horizontally, failing to take advantage of all of the screen's real estate; maddeningly, the manual fails to explain how to orient photos to fill the screen. Another gripe: You have to use SanDisk's Media Converter software to load photos or videos onto the e260 because the player does not natively support any image or video formats, not even JPEG.

Duration of ownership: 1 Year
Strengths: Battery Life, Screen Size, Price, Endurance, Fanciness.
Weaknesses: Isn't compatable with same type of file iPod's use. (.mp4)
Overall: I've had it for a year so far, and it still works perfectly, even after the times I've dropped it. It still works fine if I have the system full, and the battery is quite low. Its great, and has worked for me perfectly, all I have to do is Sync music from my Windows Media Player to it, and Voila!

Strengths: Nice display, FM tuner is a bonus, decent battery life, I like the size - it may be thicker than a Nano, but it feels more solid and less likely to crack/break if it should fall, be sat/stepped on. Nice appearance, easily cleaned.
Weaknesses: Have had some compatability issues from day one. Rhapsody program is crap. Support is less than helpful.
Overall: I think I need "MP3 Players for Dummies", because I have some major play-back issues with this thing. Music will show on the Rhapsody program that won't show on the player, and vice-versa. Music that I rip from my CDs and transfer to the player will not play until I renew my subscription status. 3 exchanges and days of working with tech support haven't helped at all. When it does play, it has good sound and a good look. The buttons, as many others state, are quite small for someone like myself with big hands, but as also stated most mp3 players have that issue. If I could get this thing to show and play what I want it to I would be a truly devoted fan.

Strengths: When it worked it was a good player.
Weaknesses: I had my first one for about 5 weeks and it froze and could not even be restored in the recovery mode. I returned it for another e260 and same thing happend within 3 weeks of getting the new one. I recently replaced the Sansa with the Microsoft Zune 30g and love it. I bought it for $200 on sale and with coupon, the same price that I paid for the SanDisk Sansa e260. I wouldnt recommend the e260 to my worst ememy!
Overall: IF YOU WANT A MP3 PLAYER THAT IS GOING TO LAST MORE THAN TWO MONTHS, THIS IS NOT IT!!

Strengths: It is neat to have video and pics. Its nice have it organized itno songs, artists, etc.
Weaknesses: The video quality is sometimes crappy. The pictures aren't always the same size. It even locked up on me. I went to my go list and tried playing a song. It stopped none of the buttons worked. I played with it then I held the power button for like 20 seconds and it worked.
Overall: It is a nice thing to have. It is small enough so you can take it to a lot of places. I recomend this over an Ipod. To put stuff on it u just click and drag it to your folder and you are done. But to put videos on it you need the sansa media it comes with.

Strengths: looks deceivingly good.
Weaknesses: It didn't work and the support team is totally unresponsive.
Overall: The unit doesn't work. Communications to the support team of both SanDisk and Consumer Depot are unresponsive. Might as well donate your money to the charity. I will never buy this crap again.

Strengths: Size and Fingerprint, Great Software and Overall Ergonomics, Brite Screen, Battery Life and Replacability, Style and Design
Weaknesses: Not One Single Flaw or Detractions. Am very impressed with the product
Overall: My main machine is a wonderful, amazing 60G Creative Zen Viusion M. It holds over 600CDs woth of music and over 100 full-length movies. I joined a gym and am going to begin rollerblading at 60 and wanted to try a flash-based smaller machine with a WMP11 format and try subscription services to explore my various musical tastses. I tried to new Sansa Connect with WiFi and really liked it, but it didn't have as many useful features as I thought, and the WiFi access was really severely limited. Also, After 4 days, the flywheel froze severely. So I returned it to Circuit City, where nobody really knew how to even begin to try to sell it to me...they're are SO INTo IPODs!!!I got the Rhapsody version from Best Buy, the 2 G model, on sale for $99. I've had it 2 weeks and have fallen in love with the thing. The FM is really great, clean and crisp...I love being able to record FM. While it has many of the same feature of my Zen, I love the size. I got a silicone sleeve, will also get the DLO neoprene armband case. This is simply an extremely intelligent product in a nice compact package. What I am really enjoying is downloading all kinds of music from Rhapsody to both my Scandisk portable and my Zen, such as all 250 Bach Cantatas. I'm using the Scandisk to explore new music on a daily basisand the Zen to be more a library. It's great fun. With the Sansa Connecdt, I got to try Yahoo Music Unlimited for a month, but I think Rhapsody is the finest music subscription service outthere/Can't tolerate Itunes and the whole IPOD shebang and the arogance of the whole Apple arena. While I admire the design sense, I hate the product and the arrogance. There is so much out there that is better. This Scandisk is one of them. I'm really enjoying the purchase immensely.

Strengths: Raised wheel, size, color screen, broader formats, no proprietary sync, easy video and picture conversion and formatting, sd micro card, durable construction, flash drive vs. hard drive, price
Weaknesses: none so far
Overall: My kids all have ipods, and honestly I would have bought one, but the size, price, and the fact it wasn't an Apple product got me interested. My overall storage needs are not as great as some, and I listen to things and then delete and add, so storage size is not a huge concern. And with a 2gig SD micro card, I have more than I will ever need. I like the raised wheel because I can easily and accurately raise or lower the volume in in my pocket for example, mainly because it is more tactile and accurate in nature. The size more easily fits in pockets and easier for exercise and jogging. And I just like the design over the ipod. And as with anything new or different, at first it seems awkward, but when learned poses no really deficiencies over other devices. These companies need to break Apple's stranglehold and price fixing in this market. I'm surprised they get away with how they have totally denied the free market pricing on their products. There was a huge lawsuit that Canon lost years ago, doing about the same thing. And over the years I have realized that Apple is every bit as invasive to your computer as Microsoft or any other. Time will tell as far as durability and failure, but so far so good

Weaknesses: 1) The European version doesn't have the FM tuner.2) The max volume is extremely low.
Overall: In the first review there was mentioned that the player has a "volume" high and low setting. Is it possible that there is nothing like that on the European version? Thanks
