Toshiba Satellite P105-S921 Notebook Review

by Anush Yegyazarian

Toshiba's powerful laptop comes with a reasonable price tag.

A terrific screen, rich sound, and superior performance make the Satellite P105-S921 gaming notebook from Toshiba really stand out. The system's $1999 price--quite reasonable considering what you get for it--only sweetens the deal.

The P105-S921 is a hefty beast--there's no getting around that. The unit weighs 9.2 pounds ready for travel, and measures 15.5 by 10.8 by nearly 2 inches. But that hulking package comes fully loaded. The laptop has a beautiful 17-inch, glossy, wide-screen (1440-by-900-pixel) LCD, a built-in multiformat rewritable DVD drive, 160GB of storage, gigabit ethernet, 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi, 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM, and an Intel 1.83-GHz Core Duo T2400 processor for some high-performance kick.

The Satellite soundly delivered that kick on our WorldBench 5 tests, earning a score of 95--which shows that it's plenty fast for most purposes. You also get good graphics performance from the unit's nVidia GeForce Go 7900 GS graphics with 256MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory. This isn't nVidia's top-of-the-line chip (that's the 7900 GTX), and the 7900 GS doesn't quite match the power of the 7900 GTX, but you should still get excellent game play out of it. And movie playback looked smooth, with great colors.

The pair of Harman/Kardon speakers provide full, rich sound for music, video, or games.

The P105-S921 has a good keyboard and a full numeric keypad next to it. One gripe: Because the <Backspace> key is next to the numeric keypad, I accidentally bumped into the keypad several times while getting used to the layout.

The Satellite P105-S921 packs a lot of power and does so at a price that makes it worth a very close look.

Strengths: Good gaming machine.Nice sounding Harman Kardon speakers.Beautiful chassis desgn.Intel core duo Centrino CPU rocks!Totally gorgeous 17" display.

    Weaknesses: NONE!

Overall Evaluation: I just absolutely love my Toshiba Satellite PRO P100 Media capable laptop. The specifications for my model are 100GB hard drive.Had the memory upgraded to 1.50 GB of ram.The CPU is 1.83GHZ.Internal video card is a NVIDIA GEFORCE GO 7300 with 128mb of video memory.Do not have the remote control and Dual Pad.This does not bother me as all the other features compensate.I am not a hard core gamer.Actually gaming on laptop is a new experience for me.Quite impressed with its game functionality at the moment.Have watched some DVD movies on it which looked quite sensational.Manipulating software or Internet browsing on this lappy is just incredibly easy. You just have to love that stunning 17" display with its superb resolution. My TOSHIBA has the "Designed for Windows XP.Windows Vista Capable" decal on it.To summarise this model laptop provides exactly what i need.WIN XP Professional.Large elegant display. The aesthetics can not be faulted.Specifications are acceptable.Plenty of functionality.COOL BANANAS! WHY? Because the TOSHIBA SATELLITE PRO P100 ROCKS! For anyone who is considering purchasing a laptop that has style, specifications and performs well then this multi media beauty is exactly what you need.

Strengths: price, gaming, loaded with everything!

Weaknesses: none....well, could have put 2 hard drives in , LOL

Overall Evaluation: I have the upgraded model p100 st9212, faster hard drive, blue tooth, etc........who would have "thunk" Toshiba, would first of all join the gaming ranks, and do it so well. They listened and are still listening to customers for the s921 was new, they discontinue it, and try to add onto a already viable fast system. Only down side, 1, Toshiba is the only one that sells the st9212......so not many people know about it, trust me I got it from a link that was posted at a laptop forum. The st9212 actually sells for $1899, $100 less then the s921, which in the long run, when people start to carry it the price of course will drop. Then the value is more then awesome. If your curious, testing with sisoftware sandra suite rates the t2400 processor a step above the amd64 3800x2 and just shy of the amd64 4000x2, I am an amd fan trust me but this rocks....the graphics card when using 3d mark03 to test it just falls shy of 14000, I still have to use 3d mark05 and 06, but this system again is stunning, at the very least....I was buying an alienware system, but I saved myself a bundle and got a ton of stuff....I am very happy! Hope this helps someone, there wasnt alot of reviews out there for my shopping of said item.
