The Linksys Wireless-N is a very good all-rounder in design and features; like the Belkin N1, it seriously stumbles only in performance, although not as badly. It has QoS, WPA/WPA2 Enterprise encryption, Radius server support, and truly comprehensive routing capabilities, making it our features champ among the routers we tested for our October issue roundup.

Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router
Wireless-N Broadband Router with 4-Port Switch MIMO Review, by Becky Waring August 25, 2006
The installation experience was very good. A CD setup utility led us through the physical connections and then took us to the router's Web-based Smart Wizard for Internet setup. The 90-page PDF manual was nearly as good as Belkin's, but the context-sensitive help within the Web configuration tool was not. It offered no information on the 802.11n features of the router and looked like it was simply copied from another Linksys model. Even a firmware update did not address this shortcoming in the router setup software.
The Linksys has a flat antenna situated in between two pole antennas, a departure from the usual three-pole design. It has no wall-mount bracket, but you can stand the router horizontally or vertically. The case sticks to Linksys's trademark purple and black color scheme, which we wish the company would ditch in favor of more decor-friendly choices like the white, black, and silver of the other routers we saw. On top of the device is a big button that doesn't do anything, but is "reserved" for future use. Maybe one-touch encryption setup? Linksys isn't saying.
What about speed and range? As we did for the tested Belkin and Buffalo draft-n products, we gave the overall performance of the Linksys Wireless-N line a Fair rating due to its poor throughput at long range (60 feet through house walls) and multiple failures to complete file transfers, a symptom of its lesser range. Even at close and midrange distances, the two tested non-draft-n routers did better.

Strengths: The storage link is good.
Weaknesses: The ethernet does not work well. The computers on the ethernet cannot see each other on the network. All work fine on the web.
Overall: I upgraded from the WRT54GS for the wired gigabit transfer rate. That was a BIG mistake, because now there is no transfer. Linksys' customer service was of no help, but they did spend over an hour on the phone with me before giving up. I wish I had not spent my money on this piece of junk.

Overall: I purchased all N draft equipment stictly based on the advertisements that the gear offered 4 x more range. In fact it doesn't have the range strength of the G equipment I replaced. A total waste of money. I asked for a solution and received an horrendous 300 step solution that doesn't work.. plus a firmware (bin) update that XP won't recognize and open.

Strengths: Still thinking.
Weaknesses: Poor performance, poor support, poor resolution
Overall: We purchased the linksys router and wireless adapter on the advise of a salesman at a local electronics store. I've been having reception problems from day one. When it works, blazing fast, but thats only 50% of the time. I've been trying to resolve my problems with linksys, but they are no help. I can only reset my settings so many times. Would definately not buy again. We're sad we switched from Belkin but don't want to loose our $300 investment. BTW,,,still trying to get it running.

Strengths: Quick easy setup. Great range.
Weaknesses: None so far
Overall: I'm not sure why the people that gave this router a negative review had problems, but I'm thrilled with it's performance. My daughter's laptop is almost 100 feet from the router...upstairs.....on the other side of a double flue chimney/fireplace and she has a terrific connection. Not to mention that's with an internal 802.11g card in her system. So far it's the best of the three routers that I've owned.

Strengths: Overall, great router, range is excellent, never drops connection, took 10 min. to setup.
Weaknesses: The case design needs to be improved, would like something more aethstetically pleasing.
Overall: I have had no problems with this router at all and would recommend it to anyone as the best consumer level router available at this time.

Strengths: Good signal strength throughout split level house - 3 desktops - 3 pcs - 2 pdas, 1 wireless printer and a 1TB worldbook all working well
Weaknesses: so far none - working well out of box (and I brought it as a open box item at a computer store for under $40 and it still had all the stickers in place ;) )
Overall: Using this item in conjunction with my vonage phone service which is routed thru a rt31p2 router. I hand out ips thru the rt31p2 router and also use mac address validation to allow access to my network. I also have ssid broadcast disabled with no wpa or wep authenication to slow down the network. Voice is good and data is good also - I still have my old wrt54g sitting on the floor powered off in case of emergency. This is a good item. Oh - one more thing - 2 pcs are running xp and the rest are linux - the worldbook has been tweaked and runs a linux fielshare as well and speed is good overall.

Strengths: None, terrible unit.
Weaknesses: Multiple.
Overall: This unit should not be on the market. Connection speed with the matching Wireless N network card ranged from 5mg - 60mb, all over the map. Terrible unit. I replaced it with a Dlink DIR-628. What a difference!!! All problems disappeared now I have a solid 270mb link.Do not buy this unit. I returned mine.

Overall: This little unit is so easy to set up and the speed is great compare to 54 mbps. The 256 bit encription is great. All my devices and PC's at home connect to this wireless router with no problems. For the modest price I paid this router is great.

Overall: Easy to setup router. Wireless security is great. Overall, this router works great. It is worth the money. So far any 802.11n that you purchase from this brand it's great. I installed another network router for gaming for a friend using a gaming router from this brand and it working great so far.

Strengths: Visually interesting
Weaknesses: Unreliable. Performance deteriorates within months. Riddled with problems from dropping wireless connections to e-mail-related issues.
Overall: This product represents another triumph in Linksys's quest to continue providing $160 paperweights. The third Linksys router to die in our office - and the last - this router made it less than five months before it began dropping connections on a regular basis, and with increasing frequency. Even the wired connections running through the router are now unreliable, requiring more-than-daily power cycling. The router has been more or less panned by reviewers at the PC Magazine and CNet sites. If this is how Linksys is going to build routers, perhaps Cisco should fold it up and focus on its own router line.
Sorry, the product you requested isn't currently available from any of our sellers.
