HP Photosmart R927
Photosmart R927 Digital Camera w/ Photosmart 6220 Camera Dock (8.0MP, 3296x2480, 3x Opt, 32MB Internal Memory, SD Slot) Review, by Eric Butterfield July 26, 2006
The HP Photosmart R927 ($399 as of 6/15/06) has a big (3-inch) LCD and a metal body that feels sturdy. It is the company's first 8-megapixel camera, and though you'll rarely need all that resolution to make a very big enlargement, it does give you the freedom to crop down to a small portion of your photo and still get a high-quality print.
The R927 performed quite well in our image quality tests, its photos earning very high marks for their color accuracy, exposure accuracy, and sharpness. Its only shortcoming was distortion; this was more noticeable in shots taken of a target resolution chart than in shots from most other models.
At one inch thick, the R927 isn't ultra-slim, but it fits easily enough into a shirt pocket. And at 7 ounces, it's slightly heavier than many recently tested point-and-shoot cameras.
This compact model packs a lot of processing options for shutterbugs who would rather not edit their images on a PC. You can make an image look something like an aged photo print, or add an effect that's something like a watercolor painting or cartoon. It took the camera anywhere from 8 to 11 seconds to add one of these effects to images shot at normal resolution (5 megapixels). The results were generally good, though the initial thrill quickly faded. The more subtle color modification settings were more useful (and took less time to process, about 4 seconds): You can convert an image to black-and-white or sepia, as well as add a color tint. The oddest effect is called slimming, which distorts the picture slightly to take a few pounds off self-conscious subjects. Taking a few pounds off the waistline, however, made the head of one subject look unnaturally thin.
The most impressive trick the R927 performs is stitching together panoramas and displaying them on its big LCD. You can combine up to five shots, which you shoot either left to right or vice versa. For each shot after the first, the LCD provides some outlines to help you line up an overlapped section for the next shot. The downside is that the camera takes about 45 seconds to stitch together a five-shot panorama. Doing the same thing at a PC with HP's Photosmart software will take roughly 7 seconds. Also note that once you have stitched together a panorama in the camera, you can't add an effect to the individual images.
Controls are plentiful: The R927 offers aperture-priority and shutter-priority modes, as well as white balance calibration and exposure bracketing, which is more than most point-and-shoots offer.
The R927's least appealing attribute is its battery life. Here, the camera earned the lowest score of recently tested point-and-shoots, taking just 114 shots--less than half the average--on one battery charge. If you plan to go crazy with the onboard effects, you may want to pack an extra battery.

Weaknesses: What good is a camera that does not use a standard battery/ies. Am I supposed to go home, recharge the battery and then go back to finish shooting pictures.
Overall: Why do manufacturers and reviewers waste their time and ours with cameras that use non-standard batteries?

Strengths: Vivid images, larger LCD, dock
Weaknesses: long processing time
Overall: The camera over-all is great. It takes amazing pictures and the large LCD screen makes it easy for you to see the picture you have taken. The camera also has a lot of built in photo editing features, like slimming, cartoon, and others. The one major drawback is the long processing time in between pictures. If you only plan on taking still shots of adults then its no big deal but if you need to take a few pictures rapidly this camera will disappoint

Strengths: Good color, very easy to use, large view screen, good pictures (still and video), informative menus and only weighs 8 ounces with battery and card installed.
Weaknesses: When taking a picture the view screen is very grainy. This is not so when viewing pictures that have been taken. Very hard to hold steady when in telephoto mode.
Overall: I have played with the camera quite a bit since receiving it. The only real draw back about the camera I received is the sound level when recording a video. One other thing. You really need to rest the camera on a solid base or use a tripod in telephoto mode. Other than that I am pleased with the camera.

Strengths: Instruction & menual in the camera, phtoto editing function in the camera, big & bright LCD
Weaknesses: very slow in the darkness, fast battery consuming
Overall: I got this camera for my boyfriend before, he absolutely loves it. The best thing about this camera is that it has instruction in the camera..you don't need to find your paper instruction when you have a question about functions. Also, it tells you how to fix your pictures for better qualities by different settings.. Plus, it has photoshop function in the camera, so that you don't need to transfer your picture to computer..you can just edit your photo right after you took the photo. It has many options and I think it is great function for people who are not familiar with photoshop and illustration. One bad thing about the camera so far is it takes very slow picture when it is dark.. very slow.. but this problem could be simply solved by using your flash or change your setting from night mode to something else.. (also, I think most digital camera has this problem..) Battery consuming is little faster than other digital camera, but when I concern how big & bright the LCD screen is..it is understandable. (I purchased second battery with wall charger) This is great camera for people who want to learn how to take great picture. Also, I think the price is awesome for the quality of the camera.. I am getting one more of this camera for my mom.

Strengths: Great resolution (8.2MP), sleek body, large 3 inch screen.
Weaknesses: Some noise, can only be charged though the dock, same with transferring images.
Overall: Well this camera has lots of good features right off the bat, like the large 3 inch LCD and 8.2 megapixels. The body feels nice in your hand too. The big problem is that to charge the camera or transfer pictures, you have to go through the dock. The actual camera does not have a USB connection, only a port for the dock. The picture quality is a little so-so also, lots of noise. Overall the camera is ok, not very good for someone who is semi-professional.

Strengths: 3" LCD screen is great for folks with poor vision or who just like a large screen.
Weaknesses: Battery life is unimpressive.
Overall: I only considered this because it has a 3" LCD & I needed a digicam with this large screen size. There aren't too many other non-SLR, relatively inexpensive cams with this feature so that automatically limited the field of options. I decided to go with this over a comparable Canon model based on reviews & the fact that I've had multiple HP cams in the past & have never had any issues with them. This cam takes above-average quality pictures. It has a plethora of options available that make taking great photos a breeze, as well as a lot of more advanced options I've not yet bothered to explore. The flash is weaker than average but does not seem to affect picture quality overmuch. My only real complaint is the battery life, which is below average, and the fact that recharging requires the bulky charger. This could be problematic for travelers but is not in my case. I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants a 3" LCD screen, but there are better options if you don't mind a smaller screen.
