This bare-bones model offers good image quality for little cash.

Selling for $409 on 5/18/06, the Acer AL2051W is one of the least expensive 20-inch wide-screen LCD monitors on the market. For that price, you can't expect gobs of features, and you don't receive them here. However, the AL2051W's image quality pleased us--in some case, more than that of pricier LCDs.

The AL2051W makes no bones about its bare-bones design. It's a plain affair with a black bezel and no USB ports whatsoever. Decent-sounding speakers and a headphone jack reside in the matte silver base. The on-screen menus are reasonably easy to use, largely because they don't bother with advanced functions.

Scoring well on both text and graphics, the Acer AL2051W showed up some more costly models, notably the Dell UltraSharp 2007WFP. The AL2051W scored particularly well in displaying the tiny print of PC World's real-world Microsoft Excel spreadsheet test and in showing an evenly lit screen in our white-screen test.

My main beef with the AL2051W is that it doesn't offer Sunday support. Any monitor with speakers is a candidate for the home or home office, where many PCs see a fair amount of use on the weekends. If something should go awry on a Sunday, you could be out of luck until the work week officially begins.

These quibbles aside, the AL2051W is a solid (if basic) monitor. Its fusion of low price and good image quality makes it a good fit for general use.

Strengths: P-MVA Panel LCD Extremely clear.

Weaknesses: NONE so far. Compared with other features, clarity is MOST important factor for a MONITOR (NOT A TV OR GAME CONSOLE)

Overall Evaluation: P-MVA Panel LCD Extremely clear. This is most important features for a MONITOR. IF you want to play movie or game, you might not mind the TN panel which is text blurred. However, if you want an extremely clear text display suitable for long time work before LCD. The only choice is non TN panel LCD monitor. I used 5 monitors before. The Planar PL2010M and this one are the best because they are P-MVA panel. TN panel is OK for moview and game, but unacceptable for working to me.Unfortunately, the retail stores and TN panel factory deliberately hide the TN panel type in their specification sheet. IT is very UNFAIR to consumers. AND consumer does not know what they bought is not a good panel monitor. As a desktop monitor LCD for whose needs long time work before monitor, P-MVA panel is worth extra $100.00 price difference.

Strengths: Beautiful crisp vibrant colors. CrystalBrite is awesome! Not a 6-Bit TN type TFT. True 8-Bit P-MVA TFT panel. No ghosting that I can observe. Vertical viewing angles are superb. Good price.

Weaknesses: Backlight bleed is horrendous. Backlight uniformity poor. CrystalBrite can reflect in brightly lit environment. Horizontal viewing angles are mediocre. No height adjustment.

Overall Evaluation: This 20" display uses the same panel as the ViewSonic VX2025WM and shares the backlight bleed issue that plagued the 2025WM. Mine is exceptionally bad. The top of the screen looks like the Aurora Borealis. The lower right 15 - 20% has a huge white cast to it that is clearly visible on some screens that are not black. You can see it on most dark colors. It frankly sickens me and I will be disposing of it through some means rather quickly. There are just some things in life not worth putting up with. Bought it online. Might try getting an RMA for an exchange, but not sure they will consider it "defective". It's a shame because otherwise it is a very nice monitor.
