Dell UltraSharp 2007WFP
UltraSharp 2007WFP Review, by Laura Blackwell June 9, 2006
The Dell UltraSharp 2007WFP can be a good buy, but it requires a little adjustment to reach its potential. Tested at defaults, this 20-inch wide-screen monitor scored poorly for image quality; with the proper image modes selected, however, its image quality looked good. Well priced at $488 as of 5/18/06, the 2007WFP offers a number of useful work and entertainment features.
When I first looked at the 2007WFP in isolation, its screen quality seemed fine. Under the strict controls of the PC World Test Center's testing--and compared to other currently available 20-inch wide-screens--the 2007WFP fared less favorably. On our text tests, jurors found letters soft-edged. They also had trouble discerning the pale gray text in a black bar on our real-world Microsoft Word test screen. These problems with contrast in dark areas persisted on our graphics tests; we saw a loss in detail in the dark blueberries of our fruit tart photo. Our jury also noted unnatural, orangey skin tones in our group photo. Though no 20-inch wide-screen proved to be a complete washout with image quality, this Dell got outperformed even by less expensive units from Acer (AL2051W and Ferrari F-20), Philips, and ViewSonic
A poor choice of default settings may be the culprit here. When I conducted a subjective evaluation under the same lighting conditions, the 2007WFP showed some versatility. By tinkering with the five color modes and three image modes, I was able to obtain better contrast and colors on the same screen shots. The 2007WFP's transparent, easy-to-read menus show as a bar at the bottom of the screen, instead of the usual view-blocking rectangle in the middle of it; this makes tweaks easier than usual. Some PC World readers have complained about color banding problems in the 2005WFP, but we observed no banding in our review unit of the 2007WFP.
When it comes to features, the UltraSharp 2007WFP shines. It's one of the few 20-inch wide-screens we tested that provides a full range of physical adjustments: tilt, height, pivot, and swivel. It connects to DVD players and other entertainment devices with composite and S-Video inputs, as well as to computer externals with its four USB 2.0 ports. Add in a generous 24/7 support policy, and the 2007WFP becomes a monitor equally suited to both work and play.
The Dell UltraSharp 2007WFP can deliver good image quality with some tweaking, and it includes some multimedia functions and a good service plan.

Duration of ownership: 4 Months
Strengths: Resolution, refresh rate, style(overall look), picture quality.
Weaknesses: None!!!!
Overall: I bought this for my gaming rig that was using a 19" viewsonic CRT(a great one), and I bought this monitor(Dell has it for like $360 now) and set up dual-monitors with the CRT. It is so crazy how much better this LCD looks compared to my awesome CRT(it was viewsonic's ultrabright model, one of the better crt monitors out there). I have played 2 games mostly since I have had this, warcraft 3(which does NOT have wide-screen support) and Oblivion(which does support widescreen resolutions). Oblivion looked BEAUTIFUL with the 1650 x 1050 resolution this supports. Warcraft, I ran on the highest resolution, which was not a widescreen one, but somehow it looked marvelous anyways, and it did not feel stretched out either. I was very impressed. Get it, if not this one, the 24" dell (which I'm saving for, so I can dual the 20" and 24"). FYI, I do work for Dell(its what made me by it) and I recommend getting it at a Dell Direct Store, sometimes they can get you better prices, I work at the Dulles Town Center Mall in VA, and we do have it on display as well. Anywho, I love it, no reason not to recommend it, I dont use the usb ports, but it was a nice addition.

Strengths: Everything about it.
Weaknesses: None, so far
Overall: I did a lot of research before making my purchase. I am not disappointed. This is my first LCD flat screen monitor and I only bought one. If I had more space I would expand and purchase another one.

Strengths: Super bright colors, clarity and resolution are awesome, usb ports on side
Weaknesses: None.
Overall: As a staunch CRT graphics person, I was kinda iffy about this purchase. I am so pleased with this purchase. This monitor is outstanding. There are buttons on the lower right corner that are easy to manuver/navigate and the usb ports on the lower right edge are very convienient. The resolution is wonderful with my photogrammetry work. Now I have room on my desk for other items besides the CRT! You won't be dissappointed with this monitor.

Strengths: Awesome picture quality; Large viewing area; low price.
Weaknesses: none so far
Overall: This monitor is awesome. I mostly held back from getting a widescreen monitor because I was afraid that I would not be able to run games at the high native resolution but FEAR extraction point looks pretty sweet on it @1024 x728. In regular desktop use you would not even know its an LCD. Its much better than my old 19" Samsung LCD.

Strengths: Aesthetically pleasing, 4 port USB 2.0 hub included (2x in back, 2x on right side), height adjustable, able to rotate to portrait view, able to rotate side-to-side, 3 year warranty included
Weaknesses: Some kind of speckling effect on bright colors (hard to explain), needs a somewhat powerful system to run games at native resolution (1680x1050)
Overall: Coming from a 15" LCD, this monitor was a huge step up. High resolution widescreen (1680x1050) lets you use photo editing tools much easier than before. It also lets you watch movies at a much larger size since they are always restricted on width and not height. After ordering the monitor on the main Dell site on a Saturday, I received it on Wednesday. The box was quite light (much lighter than any CRT box. After unpacking it, there was not much to set up. Attach the stand to the screen and plug in the monitor to the computer and power outlet. At first I thought the stand would be weak, but it is solidly built of metal rather than plastic. Pictures are very vibrant if you are using DVI. If you are using a VGA connection, you will not see very high picture quality. Also, I have yet to see any ghosting in any of my RTS or FPS games. Those of you who are concerned about the 16ms response rate should not be scared. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase. This monitor may cost about $50 more than some of its competitors, but I certainly think the Pros (as listed above) are worth the extra money. And despite what anyone says, in my experience, Dell customer service is very good.

Strengths: S-IPS panel, relatively low price,a full range of physical adjustments: tilt, height, pivot, and swivel;4 inputs: VGA, DVI, S-video, composite
Weaknesses: little loss of really dark details, backlight non-uniformity (lighter in the corners)
Overall: Nice monitor, have S-IPS matrix, which mean that you really have 178 degree viewing angle and perfect colors. Contrast is not very high, though. Films looks great on this widescreen monitor, text easy to read, and games runs smooth too. The comparable NEC 20WMGX2 cost at least $100 more, so it's up to you which one to choose. I choose Dell :)
