NEC MultiSync 20WMGX2
MultiSync 20WMGX2 Review, by Laura Blackwell June 9, 2006
NEC's MultiSync 20WMGX2 follows on the success of its smaller siblings, the 70GX2 and 90GX2. Like its smaller siblings, this 20-inch wide-screen LCD employs a glossy screen that shows rich colors and sharp detail. However, the 20MGX2 also includes entertainment extras such as a TV tuner and remote.
Our jury gave the 20WMGX2 high marks on PC World's text test screens. It didn't lead the pack on any one test, but its consistently high performance on each screen combined to give it a fine text score. In graphics tests, the 20WMGX2's performance really took off. It wowed our jurors with rich and accurate colors, especially on our important (and difficult) photo tests. It brought out both the vibrant colors in our fruit tart photo and the natural skin tones in our group portrait. We even saw the freckles on our fairest portrait subject; many monitors render the freckles invisible.
Like NEC's other GX2 models, this 20-inch wide-screen has a round stand with a lazy-Susan swivel mechanism. The screen controls, including the intuitive eraserhead-like NaviKey, sit between the bottom of the silver bezel and the large black speaker bar beneath it. The 20WMGX2 sports not one, but two back panels to shelter inputs. One panel covers the DVI and VGA inputs and two of the four USB ports (the other two live on the left side of the bezel). The other panel conceals the S-Video, composite, and component inputs as well as a TV antenna. An NTSC TV tuner allows the 20MGX2 to show over-the-air TV content.
The silvery remote feels slightly flimsy, but it works. Its easy-to-find DV mode button makes it easy to flip between the different presets: standard, text, movie, gaming, and photo. When I watched HDTV, standard-def TV, and DVD content on the movie mode, I found its picture generally pleasing, but slightly soft and pale. I found the photo mode easier to watch. All in all, though, this is far better moving-image quality than I usually see from a desktop monitor--TV tuner or no.
Its $699 price (as of 5/18/06) would be steep for an ordinary 20-inch desktop monitor. For an excellent desktop monitor that's also a decent TV, though, it's a good deal.

Duration of ownership: 3 Years
Strengths: component and composite, DVI, excellent picture, audio better than most, picture in picture
Weaknesses: no HDMI
Overall: I own three! I run component cables from the satellite receiver so I can watch tv while I work on the computer. When I got my first one, it was the only one with component in, most had RCA connections.

Strengths: Great Picture, Great Quality, Excellent Brightness, Lots of Inputs for all purposes, Great Monitor for watching movies and doing Photographic works and great viewing angles.
Weaknesses: Not really much except the price and tough to reach inputs.
Overall: This is an excellent monitor. great viewing angles and great pictures. If money is not an issue this is the lcd to get. It has the SIPS panel where the colors are vibrant and the the viewing angles are 176/176. Once the monitor is tuned, it is an excellent asset for editing the photos and using as regular LCD monitor. This monitor may not be suitable for fast games as such but for movies to watch here and there its good enough. As a TV, I can't say much since I don't really use it for that purpose.

Strengths: Very brightHigh contrastFast responseVery sharpMany inputsTop notch image quality
Weaknesses: Some input ports are not so easy to access
Overall: The NEC Multisync 20WMGX2 monitor is an LCD widescreen (16:9) flat panel monitor and TV. It is amazingly bright and sharp. The image quality is outstanding. The "Opticlear" screen coating might cause some glare in a brightly lit room, but I have not found it to be an issue in any type of lighting - day or night - in the room where I use it. I have not found the DV Mode presets (standard, text, movie, photo, and gaming) to be of much value for my usage. I just set it to "standard" and calibrated the monitor to 6500K for photo editing, and I find that setting to be fine for general usage. However, extremely bright scenes in some movies tend to wash out with that setting. It is possible that the preset DV mode of "movie" might be better for watching movies, but since I rarely watch movies on my computer, I have not played much with the presets. One thing I noticed when editing photos was the default sharpness setting caused some photos to appear too sharp. This issue was particularly noticeable on low resolution images. I had to back off on the default sharpness setting in order to be able to accurately sharpen photos in Photoshop. When I first ordered this monitor, I was concerned whether my ATI Radeon 9250 video card would support the 1680x1050 resolution because that resolution was not listed for my old monitor. However, that turned out to not be a problem because the resolution became available when I installed the new monitor. Obviously, my video card would not be able to handle fast 3D games at that resolution, but I rarely play games. So, with my current computer, I am satisfied with the performance.Overall, I love this monitor. I had a difficult time thinking of anything substantive to list as a weakness. It is a "knock-your-socks-off" monitor. Very small text fonts are so sharp that it is easy to read tiniest text.

Strengths: great image quality, fast response, integrated tv tuner, remote, PIP
Weaknesses: default settings may be too bright but when calibrated and tuned, has an excellent display, pricey
Overall: I switched from a 19 inch dell panel to this monitor. At first it was hard to justify the high price but upon using it, I can see why it is so pricey; you definitely get what you pay for as it provides loads of connectors and options. In comparison with my 19 inch monitor, the picture is much more clear and sharp. In addition, the colors are vibrant and true. What may turn some people off though is the glossy coating on the screen. However, the positives far outweigh the negatives so don't hesitate to try this out.

Strengths: Excellent display; many features (PnP, built-in HD)
Weaknesses: Unusual image persistence; high gloss "Opticlear" might be distracting in some lighting conditions (very reflective).
Overall: This monitor has one of the best displays that I've personally used for home use. This is the second Nec LCD that I've owned (other is an LCD 1765). Up against the whole lot at a local retail chain, this display was very impressive--easily the best. The one and only negative claim I can make is the image persistence that occurs, even after just a few minutes (an image remains in the background after closing the application window). It was so noticeable that I ended up doing an RMA and Nec sent me a new monitor. Sadly, this one experiences some image persistence as well. Overall, a very "sweet" monitor.
